Abstract: in physiological circumstances, bone resorption and formation are coupled processes. when, however, one predominates over the other the result is a gain or a loss of bone mass. to study this dynamic process, biochemical bone markers have been developed. osteocalcin and bone alkaline phosphatase better represent bone formation, while pyridinoline, deoxypyridinoline and collagen type i cross-linking (amino and carboxi-terminal) telopeptides, the bone resorption. in the follow up of osteoporosis treatment, the bone resorption markers are more specific and sensitive than the formation markers. during the treatment of post-menopausal osteoporosis with anti-reabsortive therapy, the rate of fall from basal values of resorption markers at 3 or 6 months are related to the increase on bone mass after long-term treatment. the bone markers have applications in a number of diseases of the skeleton including osteoporosis, and helped to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of many diseases that affect bone tissue. although they still need better sensibility and specificity to be strongly recommended in the clinical routine, their use should be encouraged to assess risk of fractures in special cases, to aid treatment decisions, and to monitor treatment.

A osteocalcina sérica intacta e fosfatase alcalina óssea melhor representam o processo de forma o óssea enquanto as piridinolinas e fragmentos telopeptídeos carboxi e amino-terminais do colágeno tipo I melhor refletem a reabsor o óssea.

Abstract: the occurrence of osteoporotic fractures in the elderly is associated with reduced levels of vitamin d and resulting secondary hyperparathyroidism, and inpatients are the ones at a higher risk. in brazil, given its high level of insolation, the population?s large amount of vitamin d is inferred to be adequate. in this study we aimed to assess the serum levels of 25-hydroxivitamin d (25ohd), parathormone (pth) and ionized calcium (cai), as well as to analyze the prevalence of both hypovitaminosis d and secondary hyperparathyroidism in the elderly living in the city of s?o paulo. we studied 177 inpatients (125 women and 52 men) with mean age (sd) 76.6 (9.0) years, and 243 outpatients (168 women and 75 men) aged 79.1 (5.9) years. in this assessment 71.2% in the inpatients group and 43.8% in the outpatients group had 25ohd levels below the minimum recommended (50 nmol/l), with the women presenting with levels considerably lower than the men. secondary hyperparathyroidism occurred in 61.7% of the inpatients and in 54% of the outpatients. considering the results achieved, we recommend vitamin d supplementation in effective doses for the brazilian elderly population, in addition to suggesting a discussion for the implementation of vitamin d-enhanced food policies, particularly oriented to the ones at a greater risk.
The monetary transmission mechanism in Brazil: evidence from a var analysis
Luporini, Viviane;
Estudos Econ?micos (S?o Paulo) , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-41612008000100001
Abstract: this article presents evidence on the interest channel of the monetary policy for the brazilian economy of the 1990s analyzing the effects of an unexpected change in the baseline interest rate on output, prices and the exchange rate in a vector autoregression system. our main results are: a) a tightening in the monetary policy affects economic activity immediately, reducing the rate of growth of real gdp; b) the exchange rate and prices are affected only after a time interval, with inflation assuming a downward trend only two months after the monetary shock; c) results do not change when the specification is controlled for international conditions, commodity prices or other measures of inflation and economic activity; d) monetary shocks have a significant impact on the volatility of output and inflation in the benchmark model e) monetary shocks have a significant impact on the volatility of the debt/gdp ratio in the control-model.
Sustainability of the Brazilian fiscal policy and central bank independence
Luporini, Viviane;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402000000200004
Abstract: this paper analyzes the sustainability of fiscal policy in brazil since the financial reform of 1965 and discusses how the relationship between the treasury and the central bank has determined the federal government's capacity to finance itself. a sustainable policy is defined as one such that the discounted government debt as a ratio to the gdp is backed by expected primary surpluses of equal present-value. in the context of an infinite-horizon framework, sustainability is tested through the mean-zero stationarity of the discounted debt/gdp ratio. although the overall results indicate sustainability, tests on subsamples show that the fiscal policy was sustainable prior to 1980, but it assumed an unsustainable path during the 80's and early 90's.
Proteomic-Based Identification of CD4-Interacting Proteins in Human Primary Macrophages
Rui André Saraiva Raposo,Benjamin Thomas,Gabriela Ridlova,William James
PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0018690
Abstract: Human macrophages (Mφ) express low levels of CD4 glycoprotein, which is constitutively recycled, and 40–50% of its localization is intracellular at steady-state. Although CD4-interacting proteins in lymphoid cells are well characterised, little is known about the CD4 protein interaction-network in human Mφ, which notably lack LCK, a Src family protein tyrosine kinase believed to stabilise CD4 at the surface of T cells. As CD4 is the main cellular receptor used by HIV-1, knowledge of its molecular interactions is important for the understanding of viral infection strategies.
Investimento privado: uma análise empírica para o Brasil
Luporini, Viviane;Alves, Joana;
Economia e Sociedade , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-06182010000300002
Abstract: this study identifies the determinants of private investment in brazil over the period of 1970 to 2005. the paper presents the main investment theories, and recent developments of these theories, as well as how they can be applied to brazilian data. the results indicate that increases in income and economic activity have positively influenced private sector investment in brazil. the reduction in credit volume and the existence of political and economic instabilities are shown as being harmful to private investment in the analyzed period. the implementation of public policies that can guarantee economic stability and improve the government's credibility, along with increases in credit offer, may boost private investment in brazil.
Reconstruction of Riser Profiles by an Underwater Robot Using Inertial Navigation
Luciano Luporini Menegaldo,Stefano Panzieri,Cassiano Neves
Journal of Robotics , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/638394
Abstract: This paper proposes a kinematic model and an inertial localization system architecture for a riser inspecting robot. The robot scrolls outside the catenary riser, used for underwater petroleum exploration, and is designed to perform several nondestructive tests. It can also be used to reconstruct the riser profile. Here, a realistic simulation model of robot kinematics and its environment is proposed, using different sources of data: oil platform characteristics, riser static configuration, sea currents and waves, vortex-induced vibrations, and instrumentation model. A dynamic finite element model of the riser generates a nominal riser profile. When the robot kinematic model virtually scrolls the simulated riser profile, a robot kinematic pattern is calculated. This pattern feeds error models of a strapdown inertial measurement unit (IMU) and of a depth sensor. A Kalman filter fuses the simulated accelerometers data with simulated external measurements. Along the riser vertical part, the estimated localization error between the simulated nominal and Kalman filter reconstructed robot paths was about 2?m. When the robot model approaches the seabed it assumes a more horizontal trajectory and the localization error increases significantly. 1. Introduction One of the key elements of deep-water petroleum exploration is the production riser. Risers are the ducts that transport petroleum, water or gases from the exploitation well up to the production platform. Either rigid or flexible types of risers may be used in the oil field. Both types are submitted to a broad spectrum of failure causes [1]: mechanical loads, aging, corrosion, erosion, temperature effects, installation or fabrication nonconformities, and so forth. Therefore, the availability of inspection tools to assess riser integrity status in situ is highly desirable. Such procedures are performed mainly by visual inspection with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) [2] or autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) [3]. In some cases, sensors are installed directly on fixed points of the riser surface to measure strain and riser motion [4]. Other types of nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques can be used, such as magnetic, radiographic, or ultrasound methods [5]. In these cases, however, the operational constraints for using human operators are a major problem. A few papers address robotic devices specifically designed for underwater riser inspection. Psarros and his collaborators [6] proposed a robot that moves along the riser by using a mechanism composed of two parts. One part stays attached to the riser
Caracteriza??o reológica da goma xantana: influência de íons metálicos univalente e trivalente e temperatura em experimentos dinamicos

Polímeros , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-14282011005000043
Abstract: the dynamic rheological properties of water xanthan gum solutions with and without the addition of nacl or al2(so4)3.18h2o were measured in a strain controlled rheometer applying heating and cooling cycles. the terminal relaxation time decreased with increasing temperature. this time increased with the addition of 0.5 wt. (%) of salt, but decreased when 1 wt. (%) was added. during heating a conformational change occurred at 51 °c and upon cooling two structures were observed between 86 and 47 °c and below 47 °c. when salt was added there was no conformational change during heating, but the two structures again appeared during cooling, though at different temperature ranges.
A Survey on Open Problems for Mobile Robots
Alberto Bandettini,Fabio Luporini,Giovanni Viglietta
Computer Science , 2011,
Abstract: Gathering mobile robots is a widely studied problem in robotic research. This survey first introduces the related work, summarizing models and results. Then, the focus shifts on the open problem of gathering fat robots. In this context, "fat" means that the robot is not represented by a point in a bidimensional space, but it has an extent. Moreover, it can be opaque in the sense that other robots cannot "see through" it. All these issues lead to a redefinition of the original problem and an extension of the CORDA model. For at most 4 robots an algorithm is provided in the literature, but is gathering always possible for n>4 fat robots? Another open problem is considered: Boundary Patrolling by mobile robots. A set of mobile robots with constraints only on speed and visibility is working in a polygonal environment having boundary and possibly obstacles. The robots have to perform a perpetual movement (possibly within the environment) so that the maximum timespan in which a point of the boundary is not being watched by any robot is minimized.
