Abstract: a new, safe, highly immunogenic and probably long term effective inactivated hepatitis a virus vaccine has been licensed for clinical use. clinical trials in developed countries have demonstrated its efficacy in preventing hepatitis a in high risk groups, such as travelers to regions where hav infection is endemic and day care children and staff, its efficacy in postexposure conditions and in community outbreaks. the authors review the basic and changing features of the disease and its epidemiology in especific geographical regions trying to elucidate its use in the control of the disease in developing countries, especially in brazil. taking in consideration its efficacy, safety and immunogenicity, the inactivated hepatitis a vaccine may be of extreme value in terms of individual protection. because this vaccine is so new, there are no formal recomendations for its use in developing countries, and appropriate public health use of hepatitis a vaccine requires up-to-date epidemiological information.

Abstract: this article is a case report of a 56 years old man, without known cardiac abnormality, presented signs of cardiac insufficiency. transthoracic echocardiography revealed a quadricuspid aortic valve (qav) with a moderated regurgitation. the clinical treatment was initiated with a good evolution. after one year, a new echocardiography revealed huge aortic regurgitation, pulmonary hypertension and lower ejection fraction. after that, the surgery for changing the valve was indicated in order to prevent the pathology progression. qav is a rare pathology (0.003% to 0.043%). usually is not associated with other cardiovascular pathologies. it can be an incidental finding but in general it carries aortic regurgitation in adulthood due to bad closure of the four cusps. there are different anatomical variations for the aortic valve cusps: four unequal cusps, three equal cusps and one smaller cusp (majority) and up to four equal cusps. transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography can easily asses the morphological and functional status of such a valve.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of low-intensity laser therapy and muscle relaxant in the characteristic ultra structural masseter muscle occlusal wear. Animals and Methods: 40 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: the control group (GI), occlusal wear (G-II), laser occlusal wear (G-III), and the muscle relaxant occlusal wear (G-IV). Under general anesthesia given intraperitoneally, animals in groups II, III and IV had unilateral amputation of upper and lower molar cusps to simulate an occlusal wear situation. The masseter muscle G-III received laser therapy (830nm, 4J/cm2, 40mW, f ~ 2mm) and the procedure was subsequently repeated every other day for 14/30 days. G-IV animals were treated with daily injection of dantrolene (2.5 mg / kg in 0.5 ml of H2O). From 24 hours after the elimination peak. The animals were euthanized with an overdose of anesthesia on days 14 and 30 after the removal of the cusps and the ipsilateral masseter muscle was excised and divided in two, one half was routinely processed for light microscopy and other for electron microscopy. There was no statistical difference between each experimental group and the control and between periods in each experimental group. However, the muscle fibers in the G-II showed the most pronounced changes. There is no causal relationship between muscles fibers injuries and occlusion and, despite signs of muscular tissue injury were more evident in the occlusal wear group. Results indicates a moderate action of laser therapy and muscle relaxants in skeletal muscle.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic parameters estimated in intra and interespecific hybrid families of elephant grass under two evaluation strategies: per se and genetically stratified mass selection. ten families of intraespecifc hybrids and ten families of interespecific hybrids were used. the characteristics evaluated were the following: plant height, plant agronomic score, dry matter content and dry matter production. it was estimated, for genetic parameters, heritability in the wide sense, variance, genetic and experimental variation coefficient and genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlation. the experiment was evaluated in a random block design with three repetitions. greater genetic variability for the studied characteristics were observed among the interespecific hybrids of elephant grass and pearl millet in comparison to the intraespecifc hybrids of elephant grass. heritability showed higher percentages for per se strategy among the studied hybrids. genetically stratified mass selection is less effective in removing the environmental effects aiming at improving experimental precision.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the percentages of lignin, cellulose and the thickness of the epidermis through histological cuts of the stems of elephantgrass clones (Bua u/112 x Cuba 116-15,3, Itambé II-2.53, Bag-50, Taiwan-146-2.26, Taiwan A-146, Itambé IV-4, ItambéII-2.3 and Cuba-116 x of Roxo Botucatu-17.27), in three different strata of stems (basal, medium and apical region), registering morpho-anatomical characteristics that can affect grass quality. Clones were collected from established area in the Experimental Station of the Agronomical Company of research in Pernambuco (IPA). A completely randomized experimental design was set in a factorial 8 x 3 x 3 (eight clones, three strata, and three tiges). Significant differences were observed (P< 0,05) between clones evaluated. The clone Itambé II-2.53 and Itambé II-2.3 presented lower values of cellulose in the medullar region associated with higher values of lignin in the region of the cortex, in relation to the others clones evaluated. The basal region of stems presented higher lignin texts, as much in the cortex, as in the medullar region. The results evidenced the importance of histological evaluations in the selection of forages grass destined to animal feeding.

Abstract: a field experiment was carried out in mossoró, rio grande do norte state, brazil, to evaluate the physiological characteristics and yield of sweet-potato cultivars esam 1, 2, and 3, harvested at 105, 130, and 155 days after planting date. the experiment was a 3 x 3 factorial in a randomized complete blocks design with four replications. among the variables that compose the assimilatory apparatus of the cultivars, only leaf size was significantly different. the cultivars harvested at 155 days after planting date (i.e., 25 days after the recommended cycle) presented fever and smaller leaves and showed smaller leaf area ratio. however, they performed more efficiently in photosynthate translocation to storage roots, which increased significantly the number of marketable roots per plant and, consequently, both marketable and total root yields.
