Abstract: The Pisolithus tinctorius symbiosis related protein expressed sequence tag (EST PtSRP) was previously identified in the first hours of the interaction between the fungus Pisolithus tinctorius and sweet chestnut Castanea sativa, and partially characterized as a fungal marker gene of ectomycorrhizal symbiosis formation. We used the 5’ rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) to obtain the PtSRP mRNA 5’ region, and together with our previously reported 3’ mRNA region, the full mRNA sequence was assembled by use of bioinformatics tools and deposited to GenBank (Accession: GU733439). The full-length mRNA sequence (636 bp) revealed the locations of the 5’ and 3’ untranslated regions (UTRs) and contained the Kozak sequence (ccc aag ATG A) in the 5’ UTR. The in silico translated PtSRP open reading frame (ORF) codes for a 127 amino acid protein and contained four putative post-translational modification sites (two N-glycosylation and two phosphorylation). The protein secondary structure is postulated to be composed of one N-terminal hydrophobic transmembrane alpha helix and at least six hydrophilic beta-strands spread across the protein. Sub-cellular localization prediction suggests that the protein is involved in cellular secretory pathway, supported by the presence of a cleavage site motif close to the membrane anchor. The data presented herein indicate the role of PtSRP as a fungal membrane secreted protein involved in early stages of ectomycorrhizal formation, with application as a possible marker for nascent ectomy-corrhiza fungal development.

Abstract: Introduction: Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) is a relevant cause of diarrhea, particularly among infants and young children in developing countries. Methodology: We compared the frequency, antimicrobial resistance, adherence, enterovirulence and genetic diversity of DEC isolates from Guarani indigenous population under five living in distinct villages in Brazil. Results: Of the 314 E. coli isolates from 57 children, with and without diarrhea, 15% (48/314) were classified in DEC categories: aEPEC (56%, 27/48), EAEC (35%, 17/48) and ETEC (8%, 4/48). ETEC belonged to plylogroup A, EAEC to groups A, B1, B2 and D, and aEPEC to phylogroups A, B1, and B2. EAEC exhibited the aggregative adherence phenotype while ETEC and aEPEC the aggregative and undefined patterns. Multidrug-resistance was detected in aEPEC, ETEC and EAEC while extensive drug-resistance was found in EAEC and aEPEC. RAPD typing revealed a genetically diverse bacterial population. Conclusion: This is the first report regarding aspects of DEC in an indigenous Brazilian population, showing that Guarani children are DEC carriers and that antimicrobial resistance at high levels is widely disseminated among these enteropathogens.
Pseudempleurosoma gibsoni n. sp., a new Ancyrocephalid Monogenean from Paralonchurus brasiliensis (Sciaenidae) from off the Southeastern Coast of Brazil
Santos, Cláudia P;Mour?o, Elizabeth D;Cárdenas, Melissa Q;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762001000200013
Abstract: pseudempleurosoma gibsoni n. sp. (monogenea: ancyrocephalidae) is described from the oesophagus of paralonchurus brasiliensis (steindachner) from off the coast of brazil. the type-species of pseudempleurosoma yamaguti, 1965, p. carangis yamaguti, 1965, is redescribed and the diagnosis of the genus is amended. metadiplectanotrema gerasev et al. 1987 is considered synonym of pseudempleurosoma. this genus now contains four species, including p. carangis, p. caranxi gerasev et al., 1987 n. comb., p. myripristi gerasev et al., 1987 n. comb. and the one new species.
The Ultrastructure of the Gastrodermis and the Nutrition of the Gill Parasitic Atriaster heterodus Lebedev and Paruchin, 1969 (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea)
Santos, Cláudia P;Souto-Padrón, Thais;Lanfredi, Reinalda M;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761998000200028
Abstract: the gastrodermis of atriaster heterodus lebedev & paruchin, 1969 (polyopisthocotylea), a gill parasite from diplodus argenteus (valenciennes, 1830), is composed of "u"-shape hematin cells and a connecting syncytium, both having cytoplasmic lamellae. these cells show outgrowths and bent folds which were seen to enclose lumen material. the trapped material was then subjected to endocytosis. the nature of ingested food material was comparatively analyzed by cytochemical and histochemical tests. blood residues were detected in the gut but tests for mucins were negative. no intact erythrocytes were observed in the gut lumen.

Abstract: this paper focuses on the extraordinary impact of aids on blood-related policiesinbrazil during the late ! 9 80's. the thrcatof acquiringthe htvthrough blood transfusions, combined with the widespread social fearof contraeting the global disease, triggered an unpreeedented array of social movements and non-government agencies demanding improved, safer, and more ethieal blood banking and produetion of plasma fraetions. in fact, there were pressing dcmandsof popular opinion and the press since the late 1970'sandearly i980's against the transmission of infeetious di se ases by blood transfusion, sueh as doen?a de chagas and hepatitis. such pressures brought about some tightening of federal inspection and the launching of a national blood program, known as pró-sangue, in 1980. but these measures had little impact on the quality of services, comparcd wit.li later developments during the decade. the spread of aids through transfusion attracted national attention to institutional and political problems of the blood and plasma produetion sectors. the population at large joined the groups and movements created on the wave of that debate. the political parties f?llowed suit. the federal government yielded to pressures by developing new policies for the sector in 1988, more comprehensive and a bit more effective than the older programs. however, real progress in the creation of regional and state-funded blood centers, in the quality-control of blood, and in the adoptionof strict standards for the plasma market was only achieved when state governments (such as the states of s?o paulo and rio de janeiro) took the lead and worked together with the ministry of health authorities. but much remains to be done from the point of view of medicai inspection and legal contrai, especially in some brazilian states where action is heavily dependent on the federal government. from a broader point of view, a complete overhauling of the system of blood donation and produetion of plasma fractio
