A Relearning Virtual Machine for Hot Method Prediction

Abstract: Predicting hot methods of a program code using machine learning algorithms in compiler optimization eliminates the overhead incurred during runtime identification. Since learning is a continuous process, the system should be able to relearn and update itself. In this study we implement this idea in a virtual machine which learns and relearns as to how hot methods can be effectively predicted in a program. This is the first attempt to make a compilation system relearn about hot method prediction after each execution. By applying relearning we are able to develop models for the prediction of the frequently called and the long running hot methods that can obtain 19 and 37% accuracies showing an improvement of 10 and 21%, respectively over the corresponding models without relearning. This is due to the ability of the model to learn from every program that enters execution and reconstruct itself.

Prostaglandin (PG) analogs are shown to be superior to older drugs in both efficacy and tolerability. Though there are much fewer side effects that manifest after using PG analogs, the adherence and compliance to medication regimens are surprisingly lower than expected. A commonly sited reason is the ocular irritation and inflammation with these medications. Much of this inflammation can be attributed to the preservative, benzalkonium chloride (BAK). The chronic clinical and subclinical inflammation becomes increasingly detrimental when filtration surgery fails from bleb fibrosis secondary to this hypercellularity. A BAK-free formulation of a PG analog recently became available. BAK-free travoprost is reviewed here. It has demonstrated equal efficacy and less ocular surface toxicity than its preserved counterparts. It is expected to serve as an instrumental resource in managing ocular hypertension and glaucoma in patients who demonstrate significant sensitivity to BAK. More randomized, controlled, double-blind studies are encouraged to evaluate its improved safety and tolerability.

Increased expression of Ero1L-alpha in healing fetal wounds

Abstract: After obtaining further sequence by 5' rapid amplification of cloned ends (RACE) we find that clone 11 is Ero1L-alpha. We determined that clone 11, a differentially expressed transcript in fetal wound healing, comprises the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of an approximately 4 kb transcript in rabbit tissues that corresponds to Ero1L-alpha. We showed that Ero1L-alpha is expressed predominantly as two transcripts in rabbit skin, namely a 1.6 kb transcript and the 4.0 kb transcript recovered in our PCR SSH screen via its 3' UTR sequence. However, a third transcript of 2.9 kb was also detected in Northern blots and was subsequently cloned and confirmed by 3' RACE. Knockdown of the clone 11 sequence in rabbit adult fibroblasts via siRNA resulted in significantly decreased Ero1L-alpha message expression. Increased expression of clone 11 (Ero1L-alpha) in a variety of cell types during the wound healing response was also confirmed by in situ hybridization.Ero1L-alpha is one of the previously unknown clones identified in a PCR SSH screen for genes differentially expressed in fetal wounded tissue. In situ hybridization confirms that Ero1L-alpha shows increased expression in multiple cell types after wounding of the fetal integument.Mammalian skin has multiple critical functions including providing homeostasis and serving as a first line of defence against infection. Controlled trial of a collaborative primary care team model for patients with diabetes and depression: Rationale and design for a comprehensive evaluation

Abstract: Background When depression accompanies diabetes, it complicates treatment, portends worse outcomes and increases health care costs. A collaborative care case-management model, previously tested in an urban managed care organization in the US, achieved significant reduction of depressive symptoms, improved diabetes disease control and patient-reported outcomes, and saved money. While impressive, these findings need to be replicated and extended to other healthcare settings. Our objective is to comprehensively evaluate a collaborative care model for comorbid depression and type 2 diabetes within a Canadian primary care setting. Methods/design We initiated the TeamCare model in four Primary Care Networks in Northern Alberta. The intervention involves a nurse care manager guiding patient-centered care with family physicians and consultant physician specialists to monitor progress and develop tailored care plans. Patients eligible for the intervention will be identified using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 as a screen for depressive symptoms. Care managers will then guide patients through three phases: 1) improving depressive symptoms, 2) improving blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol, and 3) improving lifestyle behaviors. We will employ the RE-AIM framework for a comprehensive and mixed-methods approach to our evaluation. Effectiveness will be assessed using a controlled “on-off” trial design, whereby eligible patients would be alternately enrolled in the TeamCare intervention or usual care on a monthly basis. All patients will be assessed at baseline, 6 and 12 months. Our primary analyses will be based on changes in two outcomes: depressive symptoms, and a multivariable, scaled marginal model for the combined outcome of global disease control (i.e., A1c, systolic blood pressure, LDL cholesterol). Our planned enrolment of 168 patients will provide greater than 80% power to observe clinically important improvements in all measured outcomes. Direct costing of all intervention components and measurement of all health care utilization using linked administrative databases will be used to determine the cost-effectiveness of the intervention relative to usual care. Discussion Our comprehensive evaluation will generate evidence to reliability, effectiveness and sustainability of this collaborative care model for patients with chronic diseases and depression. From Science to Management: Using Bayesian Networks to Learn about Lyngbya

Abstract: Toxic blooms of Lyngbya majuscula occur in coastal areas worldwide and have major ecological, health and economic consequences. The exact causes and combinations of factors which lead to these blooms are not clearly understood. Lyngbya experts and stakeholders are a particularly diverse group, including ecologists, scientists, state and local government representatives, community organisations, catchment industry groups and local fishermen. An integrated Bayesian network approach was developed to better understand and model this complex environmental problem, identify knowledge gaps, prioritise future research and evaluate management options.
A pathological o-minimal quotient

Abstract: We give an example of a definable quotient in an o-minimal structure which cannot be eliminated over any set of parameters, giving a negative answer to a question of Eleftheriou, Peterzil, and Ramakrishnan. Equivalently, there is an o-minimal structure M whose elementary diagram does not eliminate imaginaries. We also give a positive answer to a related question, showing that any imaginary in an o-minimal structure is interdefinable over an independent set of parameters with a tuple of real elements. This can be interpreted as saying that interpretable sets look "locally" like definable sets, in a sense which can be made precise.
Circular Planar Resistor Networks with Nonlinear and Signed Conductors

Abstract: We consider the inverse boundary value problem in the case of discrete electrical networks containing nonlinear (non-ohmic) resistors. Generalizing work of Curtis, Ingerman, Morrow, Colin de Verdiere, Gitler, and Vertigan, we characterize the circular planar graphs for which the inverse boundary value problem has a solution in this generalized non-linear setting. The answer is the same as in the linear setting. Our method of proof never requires that the resistors behave in a continuous or monotone fashion; this allows us to recover signed conductances in many cases. We apply this to the problem of recovery in graphs that are not circular planar. We also use our results to make a frivolous knot-theoretic statement, and to slightly generalize a fact proved by Lam and Pylyavskyy about factorization schemes in their electrical linear group.
On the proof of elimination of imaginaries in algebraically closed valued fields

Abstract: We give a simplified proof of elimination of imaginaries (in the geometric sorts) in ACVF, based on ideas of Hrushovski. This proof manages to avoid many of the technical issues which arose in the original proof by Haskell, Hrushovski, and Macpherson.
On dp-minimal fields

Abstract: We classify dp-minimal pure fields up to elementary equivalence. Most are equivalent to Hahn series fields $K((t^\Gamma))$ where $\Gamma$ satisfies some divisibility conditions and $K$ is $\mathbb{F}_p^{alg}$ or a local field of characteristic zero. We show that dp-small fields (including VC-minimal fields) are algebraically closed or real closed.
