Toric Intraocular Lens Malposition Corrected by Lens Repositioning to Manifest Refractive Cylinder Axis in Patient with Irregular Astigmatism Due to Corneal Scar  [PDF]
Riley Sanders, Johnny Gayton
Open Journal of Ophthalmology (OJOph) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojoph.2015.52010
Abstract: A case is presented of a patient with an unexpected poor visual result and subsequent correction following cataract removal surgery via phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation using a toric intraocular lens implant (IOL). The initial operation resulted in an uncorrected vision of 20/100 (0.70 logMAR). Retrospective analysis of the patient’s corneal topography revealed irregular astigmatism secondary to remote trauma to the cornea. The cylinder axis on manifest refraction (MR) was significantly different from measured keratometry, so a second procedure was performed to align the cylinder axis of the IOL with the steep axis on MR. This repositioning procedure improved visual outcome to a final uncorrected vision of 20/25 (0.10 logMAR) and best corrected acuity of 20/20 (0.0 logMAR).
PERTENECER A LA GRAN FAMILIA GRANADINA. LUCHA PARTIDISTA Y CONSTRUCCIóN DE LA IDENTIDAD INDíGENA Y POLíTICA EN EL CAUCA, COLOMBIA, 1849-1890
Sanders,James;
Revista de Estudios Sociales , 2007,
Abstract: this article argues that the constitutional guarantees achieved by indigenous communities in the wake of the 1991 constitution were the result of a long history of negotiation between indians from the cauca and the colombian state regarding land rights and their status within the republic. it explores how indians contested the elite and racist notions of citizenship of the governing class, and examines how they negotiated the partisan struggles between liberals and conservatives.
Rortyian Hope
Mark Sanders
Human Affairs , 2009, DOI: 10.2478/v10023-009-0020-1
Abstract: This is a paper about Richard Rorty's notion of hope, and the role that it plays in breaking down Rorty's public/private distinction, and connecting philosophy to politics. The argument that philosophy can be engaged in and with the social-political world is one that is coherent with Rorty's position if philosophy is understood as striving towards its goals with a sense of contextualism and fallibilism. Placing Rorty within the tradition of the classic pragmatists, James and Dewey, I will argue that pluralism can and should serve as a contextual foundation for liberalism. Through an examination and analysis of Rorty's liberal ironist and anti-foundationalism, I will explore how Rortyian hope can be understood as socially and politically transformative, transforming our conception of knowledge from one based on certainty to one based on fallibility.
“In die bus afgeluister”: The Intellectual in the City
Mark Sanders
Tydskrif vir letterkunde , 2006,
Abstract: “In die bus afgeluister”: The Intellectual in the City Many of N.P. van Wyk Louw's essays address the role of the intellectual. In the 1930s, Louw struggled to define a place for the intellectual in relation to the Afrikaner volk and its cultural movements and political parties. At the end of “Kultuurleiers sonder kultuur” (Cultural Leaders without Culture) (1939), Louw turns to the simile of the cave from book seven of Plato's Republic. There the cave represents the city and its people, who are trapped in illusion. Plato's “philosopher” escapes the dark chamber where the prisoners observe only shadows, gains enlightenment, and returns to open the eyes of his fellow inhabitants. Returning is the duty of the philosopher. How did N.P. van Wyk Louw imagine descending back into the “cave,” into the midst of the city, to be among the people of his country? One answer lies in a pair of unpublished fragments dating from the 1940s entitled “In die bus afgeluister” (Overheard on the Bus). In these fragments, Louw eavesdrops, as he takes the bus to and from work, on the conversations of people of Cape Town of various races. We get a slice of city life, and a sense of how Louw tried to embrace that life rather than isolate himself from it. These two urban sketches nevertheless show that the task of enlightening one's fellow citizens proves more complicated than Louw expects because the intellectual is more deeply implicated in the illusory play of shadows than he imagines.
---- This article explores the imaginary build by New Yorker movies about the city's slums since the decade of 1930. The discussion is led by the complex relation between public space –especially the street- and social pathologies: alcoholism, prostitution, illiteracy and crime. It is stated that cinema was concerned, in a large series of movies, of reporting slums' streets as a factory of criminals, which caused high impact in public opinion, shaping eventually what would become the first housing policy of the US: Red Hook Houses Project. The article ends arguing that once the moral goal of cinema studios was accomplished, paradoxically the cameras didn't move to the new housing projects, but they kept on using the old neighborhood street as their favorite stage. This fed an imaginary that eventually became one of the well-known references of the mythic New York.
“Ciudadanos de un Pueblo Libre”: liberalismo popular y raza en el suroccidente de Colombia en el siglo XIX.
James Sanders.
Historia Crítica , 2009,
Abstract: This article explores how popular classes, especially Afro-Colombians, created an alliance with the Liberal Party in the Cauca region of Colombia during the mid-nineteenth century. Afro-Caucanos negotiated with elite leaders of the party, trading their votes and service as soldiers in the civil wars of the era for a variety of social, economic and political gains, including the abolition of slavery, access to commons, the reduction of aguardiente monopolies, and obtaining the status of citizens. Afro-Caucanos also redefined citizenship, imagining a popular liberalism in distinct ways from the conceptions of Liberal elites, investing it with more powerful notions of liberty and equality. In the 1870s, the alliance began to fracture as elite Liberals refused to break the hacienda system and grant land rights to their popular supporters.
Mental mapping the EC. Perceptions of students in EC countries
Christina SANDERS
Mappemonde , 1991,

Mathijs Sanders
TS·> Tijdschrift voor Tijdschrift-studies , 2011,
Abstract: During the First World War, some Dutch journals were explicitly oriented towards the culture of one of the belligerent nations. In periodicals such as the pro-German weekly De Toekomst (The Future) and the French oriented La Revue de Hollande, Dutch and foreign intellectuals and artists discussed the cultural identity of the Netherlands. This article draws attention to the latter journal. La Revue de Hollande pretended to be an intellectual trait d'union between the Netherlands and France. How did the editors try to achieve that aim? What does a first exploration of this magazine reveal about bilateral periodicals and their circles during the Great War?
