A curtose foi leptocúrtica para todas as idades, e platicúrtica para as idades de 8 a 8,9 anos. doi: 10.4336/2011.pfb.31.67.183 The objective of this work was to fit the probability density functions Normal and SB, to describe the changes, with age, in the diameter distribution of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) stands, in the region of Ca ador, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The data came from permanent and temporary plots, with ages ranging from 5 to 11,9, grouped in age classes with intervals of 1 year. The probability density functions were fitted and, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the parameters of skewness and kurtosis were calculated. Basing on Kolmogorov-Smirnov test it was verified that, for ages from 5 to 7.9 years old, the Normal and SB functions didn’t show satisfactory adherence. The SB and Normal functions showed better adherence to the ages from 8 to 9.9 and from 10 to 11.9 years old, respectively. Using the Normal probability density functions to analyze the dynamics of the diameter distribution, it was found that there was a shift of the diameter distribution curves to the right, a “flatness” and an “wideness” of these curves, over the years. The skewness was negative for all ages, except for the age from 8 to 8.9 years old. The kurtosis was leptokurtic for all ages, except for age from 8 to 8.9 years old, which was platykurtic. doi: 10.4336/2011.pfb.31.67.183

Abstract: Scientific studies in higher education are becoming an increasing matter of discussion. The Ameri- can University of Sharjah (AUS) encourages the scientific literacy of students who are not enrolled in science or engineering majors by including two required science courses in the curriculum. The courses of choice include biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, astronomy and physics. This study investigates the factors that contribute to students’ choice when selecting science courses at AUS. A survey comprised of open-ended questions as well as quantitative enquiries was administered to students enrolled in environmental science (ENV 100), aiming to investigate the main reason behind their choice. The results of this two year study showed significantly positive attitudes toward the course contents and the benefit of the course towards their future careers. Furthermore, it reveals that students are highly influenced by previous experiences with subjects, professors’ popularity, peer recommendation, their abilities in memorization, and skills in math. The study reveals that the main concern for students is related to the high amount of information and details that the course content covers. In addition, the possibility of obtaining a higher grade was also studied by observing the grade point average (GPA) for science courses over a period of four years. Nonetheless, the main factor for course choice was their genuine interest for the subject matter, which is this case study, was the environmental studies course.

Journal of Behavioral and Brain Science (JBBS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jbbs.2013.38066
Abstract:

Background: Recent neuroscience investigations on moral judgment have provided useful information about how brain processes such complex decision making. All these studies carried out so far were fMRI investigations and therefore were constrained by the poor temporal resolution of this technique. Recent advances in electroencephalography (EEG) analysis provided by Low Resolution Tomogray (Loreta), Principal Component (PCA), Correlation and Regression Analysis improved EEG spatial resolution and made EEG a very useful technique in decision-making studies. Methods: Here, we reinvestigate previous fMRI study of personal (PD) and impersonal (ID) moral dilemma judgment, taking profit of these new EEG analysis improvements. Results: PCA analysis disclosed three different patterns of brain activity associated with dilemma judgment. These patterns are proposed to disclose the neural circuits involved in benefit and risk evaluation, calculating intention to act and controlling decision-making. Regression analysis showed that activity at some cortical areas favors action implementation by increasing intention to act, while activity at some other areas opposes it by decreasing intention to act. Comparison with Existing Methods: Compared to the previous fMRI results, Loreta and PCA revealed a much greater number of cortical areas involved in dilemma judgment, whose temporal and spatial distribution were different for ID compared to PD. The present paper suggests that whenever final temporal details of the decision making process are desired,

Abstract: In this paper, we have evaluated the multispectral module implemented in the CARTOMORPH software, which is a public domain software under development by the mathematical morphology research group at FCT/UNESP. The aim of CARTOMORPH is to provide an open software with feature extraction methods and a library that contains a variety of implemented code (functions) that can be easily operated by users through graphical interface. The multispectral image processing system has been developed to allow feature discrimination by operations between bands from Remote Sensing images. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was selected to be implemented on CARTOMORPH because of its acknowledged performance for monitoring of vegetation and cartographic applications. The experiments were applied to multispectral bands from Quick Bird image and the results were compared with those provided by the SPRING and ENVI software. Former is a Brazilian free software, developed by National Institute for Space Research-INPE and dedicated to image processing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, as well as ENVI, which is a traditional remote sensing image analysis system. The results prove that the implementation of this module is correct, allowing potential usage in the field of cartography and for environmental applications.

Abstract: With high protein content, the cowpea is one of the most widely consumed legumes in northeastern Brazil. This study was aimed to evaluate the rhizobia inoculation effect on nitrogen accumulation and nodulation in cowpea subjected to water availability. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design, with six water availabilities (40%, 60%, 80%, 100%, 120% and 140% of maximum soil water retention capacity), with four replications. Soil moisture maintenance was performed by gravimetric method. The BR3267 strain (Bradyrhizobium japonicum) recommended for cowpea grown in Brazil was used. At thirty-five days after treatments implementation, the nitrogen nutritional status was assessed through SPAD reading, shoot nitrogen concentration and total accumulation. Nodulation was assessed by nodules number and dry matter. The increased water availability provided negative effect on SPAD reading and shoots nitrogen concentration. Shoot nitrogen accumulation was favored to up to 78.8% water availability, with subsequent decline. Nodulation was favored when soil water availability was between 85% and 87%. Water availability affects nodulation and cowpea nutritional status, although negative effects are more pronounced when there is soil water excess.
