Notas sobre in A. Pr. 2, 22-33.
Salles,Ricardo;
Estudios de Filosofía , 2009,
Abstract: ricardo salles' contribution is focused on alexander's peripatetic interpretation against the stoic thesis that logic is not an "instrument", but a "part" of philosophy. according to alexander, if logic were part of philosophy, as the stoics maintain, philosophy could not occupy the highest place in the hierarchy of knowledge. salles takes this to be paradoxical since both the stoics and the peripatetics consider that philosophy is, due to its object, the highest discipline. according to salles, alexander's acute criticism is not penetrating enough to make obvious a real inconsistency in stoicism. in his view, alexander's main weakness is that the reasoning on which such criticism is based depends upon some aristotelian assumptions that the stoics reject.
PLATONISMO Y AKRASíA EN CRISIPO. LA INTERPRETACIóN DE MARCELO BOERI
SALLES,RICARDO;
Ideas y Valores , 2010,
Abstract: the paper addresses two questions regarding the interpretation of akrasia among the stoics, offered by marcelo boeri in his book appearance and reality in greek thought: on the one hand, can chrysippus's monistic adaptation of the platonic model of the divided soul set forth in book iv of the republic provide a philosophically satisfactory explanation of the classical phenomenon of akrasia? on the other hand, is this phenomenon the true explanandum of this adaptation? the paper shows that the answer to both these questions could be negative and thus different from the answer provided by boeri in his book. the argument is based on the analysis of plutarch vm 446f-447b and on the analysis of the classical problem of akrasia.
Salles, Ricardo;
Signos filosóficos , 2008,
Abstract: the main purpose of this paper is to examine the reaction of aristotle and the stoic chrysippus to a metaphysical problem that has been overlooked in recent studies of ancient physics. the problem concerns the generation of the so-called homogeneous complex bodies. if, as these authors maintain, such bodies are generated by a mixture of more basic bodies, and if they are destroyed when this mixture is dissolved and the original ingredients separate themselves from each other, then, a dilema seems to arise: during the existence of the complex body (i) either the simple bodies persist as such within the complex body, in which case it appears that this latter could not be homogeneous, (ii) or the simple bodies are destroyed when the complex body is generated, in which case an explanation is needed of how the former obtain again when the latter is dissolved. at the end, i also offer an analysis of how chrysippus gives support to the thesis itself that complex homogeneous bodies are the result of a mixture of simpler bodies. the whole is preceded by an account of how his theory of mixture fits with his general theory of the generation of natural bodies.
SALLES,Walter;
Utopìa y Praxis Latinoamericana , 2009,
Abstract: this article discusses the construction of personal identity in the context of pluralism that characterizes the globalized world. in this process, cultural differences appear at the same time as both richness and threat. this discussion presupposes the importance of the hermeneutics of texts that gave birth to traditions of self-identity construction, taken as narrative identity. this is the particular case of christian identity whose discussion, at least by theology and religious sciences, requires considering philosophy as a privileged interlocutor; in the particular case of this study, paul ricoeur?s hermeneutic philosophy.
Salles,Ricardo;
Revista latinoamericana de filosof?-a , 2010,
Abstract: according to an interpretation of stoic logic advocated by some of its most recent scholars, stoic logic already contains a distinction that became important in contemporary modern logic, namely, one between propositions tautologically necessary, i.e. necessary in virtue of being true under any possible interpretation of its variables (e.g. if a, a) and propositions that are not tautologous but still necessary in virtue of their meaning (e.g. if peter is a bachelor, peter is not married). the present paper does not question the presence of this distinction in stoic logic. its aim is just to show that the textual evidence normally aduced in its favour is questionable and we need to appeal to other sources to find clear evidence for it.

Abolition in Brazil: slave resistance, intellectuals and politics (1870-1888)
Salles, Ricardo
Revista de Indias , 2011,
Abstract: The Abolition of Slavery in Brazil raises the following questions: what was the social character of abolitionism? What historical meaning did it have? Was it a revolution or simply a step in the transition towards capitalism in the country? What interests did the abolition movement defend? What social groups were the movement’s protagonists? What role did the slave play in the process? What did the abolitionist intellectuals defend and whom did they represent? These are the questions that lead this article to reflect on the relationship between where the intellectuals stood and the possibilities and limitations of joining forces, or the construction of a slave and free population as a national class at the end of the period of slavery in Brazil. [pt] A Aboli o da Escravid o no Brasil coloca as seguintes quest es históricas: qual o caráter social do abolicionismo?

According to an interpretation of Stoic logic advocated by some of its most recent scholars, Stoic logic already contains a distinction that became important in contemporary modern logic, namely, one between propositions tautologically necessary, i.e. necessary in virtue of being true under any possible interpretation of its variables (e.g.
