First record of Xanthozona melanopyga (Diptera: Tachinidae) on Brassolis astyra (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) for Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Salgado-Neto, Geraldo;
Biota Neotropica , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-06032011000300034
Abstract: xanthozona melanopyga (wiedmann, 1830) (diptera: tachinidae) is recorded here as a parasitoid of brassolis astyra godart, 1824 (lepidoptera: nymphalidae). dipteran endoparasitoids have been recorded as pupal endoparasitoids of brassolis sophorae (l.), due to the scientific and economic importance of these interespecific relationships, and aiming to increase the knowledge on natural and conservative biological control, i hereby record xanthozona melanopyga (wiedmann) as larval-pupal parasitoid of brassolis astyra godart for the state of rio grande do sul, brazil. for the first time.
Morfometria e mortalidade em pupas e adultos de Brassolis astyra (Nymphalidae, Morphinae)
Salgado-Neto, Geraldo;Di Mare, Rocco Alfredo;
Iheringia. Série Zoologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0073-47212009000200012
Abstract: the data presented are based on brassolis astyra godart, 1824 individuals sampled randomly in four locations of the state of rio grande do sul, brazil: tupanciret?, s?o martinho da serra, santa maria - two places. except in s?o martinho da serra, the data were obtained in urban areas, on syagrus romanzoffianum palms (palmaceae). the following parameters were investigated: egg laying number, hatching eggs index, number of miscarried eggs, eggs positioning on the host plant, sex ratio, parasitoid index, emergency pupa-adult frequency, longevity of pupae and adult stages, mass and volume of the pupae and morphometric measurements of pupae and adults' wings. of eggs collected in tupanciret?, 46% hatched, 43% had been parasitized and 11% were miscarried. on the other hand, in s?o martinho da serra only 4% of the eggs collected hatched, 95% had been parasitized and 1% were miscarried. in the other localities no eggs were found. based on adults emerged from the pupae, it was verified that 77% of the males and females presented a normal morphology (viable) and 23% were malformed. the differences in the average values estimated for pupal longevity among the study sites, were statistically significant. the average frequency of adults was 0.47. the data obtained showed a sexual dimorphism in size (weigh) and form (volume) of the pupae. this suggests that the size and the form of the pupae can determine the adults' viability. such effect could be associated with a stabilizing selection, where would be associated to optima values average of weigh and form. although the origin of the sampled individuals varied, the parameters that determine the size and shape are in the same direction when comparing the two sexes. data on longevity and mortality suggest that the estimated values can be influenced by the variability and ecology of the population from which the larvae were sampled.

Abstract: osmotic dehydration is a process that can be applied to fruit to increase their shelf life and hence reduce loss percentage. in the application of this process in jenipapo, a high incorporation of soluble solids was observed, considered disadvantageous because of the reduction of the similarity between the product and the fruit "in natura". in this work, low metoxilation alginate and pectin based edible coating were used to reduce this mass transfer. the effectiveness of these polysaccharides was evaluated in jenipapos, purchased in supermarkets in the metropolitan area of the city of recife, in the conditions in which they are sold. the research was developed in two stages: the first by means of a factorial design 23-1, consisting of three treatments: a (fruits without coating); b (fruits with alginate coating); and c (fruits with pectin coating) in order to study the influence of the coatings; in the second stage a factorial design 23 was used in order to determine the influence of independent variables: temperature, coating type and geometry over moisture loss, solutes uptake, weight variation and rate of dei (dehydration efficiency index). the results obtained in the first stage showed that: the coatings were efficient in the reduction of solutes uptake as well as in the moisture loss increase, the higher dei in both coatings were obtained at 50 °brix, the highest dei at 30 °c and the geometry was represented by the fruit cut in fourths. in the second stage a higher influence of the geometry over the moisture loss and the solute uptake as well as the coatings over the weight variation and moisture loss were confirmed. it was observed that the temperature exerts decisive influence over the other variables with the exception of the dei. the results showed that the lower solutes uptake associated with a satisfactory moisture loss were obtained with alginate coating and the geometry was represented by the fruit cut in fourths, at 50 °brix, regardless of the temperat

Abstract: the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of converting enzyme inhibition by captopril on ecg parameters in aged rats. four-month-old male rats received captopril dissolved in tap water (0.5 mg/l) or tap water for 2 or 20 months. at the end of treatment, under anesthesia, rr and pr interval, p wave and qrs duration, qt and corrected qt interval were measured in all animals. on the following day, chronic ecg (lead ii) recordings were performed to quantify supraventricular (svpb) or ventricular premature beats (vpb). after sacrifice, the hearts were removed and weighed. rr interval was similar in young and untreated aged rats, but significantly larger in aged rats treated with captopril. p wave and qrs length did not differ among groups. pr interval was significantly larger in old than in young rats and was not affected by captopril. corrected qt interval was larger in aged than in young rats (117 ± 4 vs 64 ± 6 ms, p<0.05) and was reduced by captopril (71 ± 6 ms, p<0.05). vpb were absent in young rats and highly frequent in untreated old animals (8.4 ± 3.0/30 min). captopril significantly reduced vpb in old rats (0.3 ± 0.1/30 min, p<0.05). the cardiac hypertrophy found in untreated aged rats was prevented by captopril (3.44 ± 0.14 vs 3.07 ± 0.10 mg/g, p<0.05). the beneficial effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition on the rat heart during the aging process are remarkable.

Abstract: two species of coffee (coffea arabica l. and coffea canephora pierre) are cultivated in brazil, but most research on zn fertilization to date has focused on c. arabica. this study was carried out to determine the functional relationship between soil zn availability determined by dtpa and mehlich-1 extractors and zn content in coffee plants belonging to the species c. arabica, cv. mundo novo iac 379-19 (mn) and c. canephora, cv. apoat? iac 2258 (ap), as well as grafted plants (mn/ap). the treatments were a 3 x 3 factorial combination of cultivars (mn, ap and mn/ap) and zn doses (0, 10 and 20 mg dm-3). the plant zn content, in relation to soil zn availability, does not depend on the extractant, but varies with the coffee species or grafted species combination. the dtpa and mehlich-1 extractants were similarly efficient to quantify the soil zn availability, independent of the coffee species (c. arabica and c. canephora). zn uptake peaked at soil zn contents of 5.6 mg dm-3 (dtpa) and 6.6 mg dm-3 (mehlich-1) for mundo novo (c. arabica) cultivar. based on the zn doses employed in the present study, the maximum zn uptake of c. canephora (cv. apoat?) and grafted plants (mn/ap) could not be determined, independently of the soil extractants.
