Abstract: Around the world, increasing numbers of developing countries are investing in space-related technologies, seeking partners for space projects, and even constructing launch facilities. Those countries must overcome many hurdles to benefit the space independently for their own security and to make significant contribute to peaceful activities such as discovery of space, even if they use the advantage of turning up late in space studies. To see the concern between science and technology and space science and its technology within a country, it is sufficient to take a look at Research and Development (R & D) investments supported by realistic policies. Incipient countries must consider the importance of international cooperation with experts and powerful corporations, to share the risk and cost and to create synergy, rather than following and copying the initiators in discovery of space, they should be able to develop new technologies and creative solutions with increasing international actors and projects, and be prepared for future with flexible and sensational plans. Turkey took important steps within the last 20 years but these efforts could not attain desired results yet. Turkey gained a position as satellite and satellite sub-system developing country in the world classification of active countries with initiated space projects. Besides not having sufficient space industry within country, most important obstacle towards Turkey is undeveloped social consciousness in this field.

Abstract: A thermoeconomic optimization analysis is presented yielding simple algebraic formulae for estimating the optimum number of feed water heater and optimal area distribution among the feed water heaters for thermal power plants. The P1-P2 method is used in the present study, together with the thermoeconomic analyses of feed water heaters.
An Indicator Model of the Spatial Quantification and Pattern Analysis of Urban Sustainability: A Case Study of Cincinnati, Ohio  [PDF]

Abstract: Shen & Guo (2014) have recently developed an array of urban sustainability indicators (USIs) as a tool to measure urban sustainability. Using 2006 data for Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, they developed a theoretical integrated USI model with a hierarchical index system, to spatially monitor urban sustainability using geo-matic approaches and further statistically detect its spatial patterns. The purpose of this study is to apply Shen and Guo’s general approach to a major American city, Cincinnati, Ohio, utilizing U.S. census data from 2010, to test its utility beyond the original Canadian test case. In doing so, the model and its indicator structure were modified for the American context after a further review of sustainability indicators. Unlike Shen and Guo, however, the model is not subjectively weighted. Nevertheless, the revised model similarly applied both statistical analysis and geo-statistical analysis to explore how urban sustainability was spatially distributed and what spatial patterns (random, dispersed or clustered) for the indices could be found among Cincinnati’s census tracts. This work confirms Shen and Guo’s conclusion that geo-matic tools can be applied to detect spatially urban sustainability patterns, which can be provided visually for urban planners, managers and administrators for use in future policy making and implementation.
Karyotype Analysis and Folding Rate of Chromosomes in Common Onion (Allium cepa L.)

Abstract: Onion chromosomes (Allium cepa L.; 2n=2x=16) were analysed for karyotype analysis using aceto-orcein staining technique, and classified due to their lengths from long to short arms whether satellite exists or not.The length of arms appeared to be very close to each other and got more force their identification. The length of long arms showed a variation from 5 to 14 m while short arms have 2 to 10 m at the early and late stages of mitotic metaphase. The reason of this variation comes from the stages which observed as late prophase in mitosis. This different chromosome length also was affected in regard to the satellite position seen on long chromosome. The folding rate changed between 1.01 to 2.16 due to the smallest total length of chromosomes.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to review all cases of robot-assisted gynecologic surgery performed at our institution between January 2008 and December 2010. The patients were reviewed for indications, complications, length of hospital stay, and conversion rate, as well as console and docking times. Results: Over the three-year period, we operated on 35 patients with benign or malignant conditions using the robot for a total of 62 surgical procedures. The docking times averaged seven minutes. The mean console times for simple hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy were 125, 47, and 62 minutes, respectively. In four patients, laparoscopic procedures were converted to open procedures, giving a conversion rate of 6.5%. All of the conversions were among the first 15 procedures performed. The average hospital stay was 3 days. Complications occurred in five patients (14%), and none were directly related to the robotic system. Conclusion: Our early experience with the robot show that with proper training of the robotic team, technical difficulty with the robotic system is limited. There is definitely a learning curve that requires performance of gynecological surgical procedures using the robot.
Determination of Economic and Financial Rotation Lengths of Hybrid Poplar Plantations: the Case of Turkey

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the economic and financial rotation lengths for hybrid poplar plantations (Populus x Euramericana Guiner cv.I-214) in a selected area from Turkey. It was determined the year providing maximum mean annual increment to economic rotation length should be measured. However, it was determined the year providing maximum financial return to financial rotation length should be measured. According to results, the economic and financial rotation lengths have been determined as 9 years and 11 years, respectively. The rotation lengths could be determined according to various factors. For example; many previous studies indicate that economic and financial rotation lengths in hybrid poplars depend on the site characteristics and planting spaces. Therefore, the most appropriate rotation length for hybrid poplar plantations should be determined by local studies.

Economic Feasibility of Organic Greenhouse Cucumber Production: The Case of Menderes

Abstract: The cost and return of organic greenhouse cucumber production was determined. An organic greenhouse cucumber budget was developed for growers in a selected area from Turkey. In this study, total costs were subtracted from total gross revenue to calculate the net return of organic greenhouse cucumber production. The cost items of organic greenhouse cucumber production were the initial investment costs to construct, variable costs, fixed costs and land rent. According to study, net return per square was determined to be 0.98 dollars for organic greenhouse cucumbers. Besides, net return per kg was calculated to be 0.07 dollars. But, production and market risks both affect profitability and economic viability of organically grown vegetables. Therefore, growers must evaluate circumstances.

Abstract: Respiratory failure in patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit is a common clinical problem. These patients need respiratory support until the effect of medical treatment begins. Positive pressure ventilation is used to support patients with respiratory failure. Mechanical ventilatory support may be given to the patient via face interface during noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) or via entubation tube during invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). Although the degree of support are the same, complication rates are lower in NIMV than IMV.
