Life between Body and Law
Sahra Dornick
querelles-net , 2008,
Do humans have an entitlement to physical and psychic integrity? How did such entitlement develop and on what basic tenants does it rest? The collected volume at hand illuminates the human right to physical integrity from the perspective of history, literary theory, politics as well as Islamic studies, sociology, and law. The authors approach current arguments justifying human rights as a fundamental right. Their analyses, critiques, and confrontations provide an innovative contribution to the current debates on torture, physical integrity, and accountability.

Lutz Hieber and Paula-Irene Villa examine the history and topicality of Queer Theory from the perspective of sociology, cultural studies, and politics. They depict essential theoretical debates and thinkers such as postmodernism, feminism in postmodernism, or the critique of identity and normalization. At the same time they place lucrative accents in the form of analyses of differing political practices, such as of the politicization of art. Overall the study successfully presents firstly, the terminology of Queer Theory ordered into their respective contexts and explained and secondly, specific forms and possibilities of political practice.

The book at hand offers a comprehensive, if sometimes long-winded, approach to postmodern and feminist texts that deal with the signifier “subject.” It introduces central theoretical texts and places them in theoretical context, including texts by French poststructuralists (Lacan, Derrida, Foucault), by representatives of “French feminism” (Cixous, Irigaray, Kristeva), and by German scholars of cultural studies (Weigel, Gro ma , Schmerl), as well as texts by postfeminist and postcolonial authors (Butler, Haraway, Minh-ha).

In the publication of her professorial dissertation, Gaja von Sychowski intends to design a general pedagogy within the context of poststructuralist thinking. In doing so, she not only addresses a long overdue topic, but she also succeeds in elaborating it on a most abstract level. However, the formalistic consistency that the author uses to advance her research is ambivalent: on the one hand, the reduction of complexity bridges gaps between different disciplines, on the other hand, gender loses meaning if it is eventually subsumed under performance. Consequently, an outline of a general pedagogy, which omits the subject-constituting power of gender, emerges.
Sabine Hess, Nikola Langreiter, Elisabeth Timm (Hg.): Intersektionalit t revisited. Empirische, theoretische und methodische Erkundungen. Bielefeld: transcript Verlag 2011.

Geared towards a critical discussion of genealogy and the advancement of intersectionality, these conference proceedings offer both ethnographic studies and methodological and theoretical reflections, which discuss both its analytical enablements and specific potential and its methodological boundaries and contextual fuzziness. To a great extent however, the editors fail to convey orientation considering the complex diversity and they, therefore, miss making intersectionality fruitful within its theoretical boundaries.

Literary and religious texts from the Early Modern era to Modernity – novels, plays, and letters as well as ego documents, philosophical writings, and visual material are the basis for this literary-historical analysis. The author focuses on the reconstruction of the gender relations and roles that can be found in the primary texts as well as on a critical analysis of the conditions for production and reception in a literary field that was fundamentally patriarchally structured. In doing so, she succeeds both in clearly illustrating to what extent gender is encoded as a structuring pattern in literary and religious texts and in showing the gap, which, due to the demarcation of female authorship and female writing, is still gaping in literary-historical research until today.
PERCEPOLIS: Pervasive Cyberinfrastructure for Personalized Learning and Instructional Support  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper describes PERCEPOLIS, an educational platform that leverages technological advances, in particular in pervasive computing, to facilitate personalized learning in higher education, while supporting a networked curricular model. Fundamental to PERCEPOLIS is the modular approach to course development. Blended instruction, where students are responsible for perusing certain learning objects outside of class, used in conjunction with the cyberinfrastructure will allow the focus of face-to-face meetings to shift from lecture to active learning, interactive problem-solving, and reflective instructional tasks. The novelty of PERCEPOLIS lies in its ability to leverage pervasive and ubiquitous computing and communication through the use of intelligent software agents that use a student’s academic profile and interests, as well as supplemental information such as his or her learning style, to customize course content. Assessments that gauge the student’s mastery of concepts are used to allow self-paced progression through the course. Furthermore, the cyberinfrastructure facilitates the collection of data on student performance and learning at a resolution that far exceeds what is currently available. We believe that such an infrastructure will accelerate the acquisition of knowledge and skills critical to professional engineering practice, while facilitating the study of how this acquisition comes about, yielding insights that may lead to significant changes in pedagogy.

Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences , 2006,
Abstract: To date 244 species of spiders belonged to 33 families have been recorded from Iran. Sixty two species, 4 genera and 8 families are reported for the first time from Iran in 2002-2006. Spiders were collected from branches, leaves, flowers and trunks of trees and bushes, on the ground, under the stones and grasses by Steiner and Baggiolini method, bottle, aspirator, pitfall trap, pans and insect net. Geolycosa altera Roewer, 955 was found to be junior synonym of Honga radiata (Latreille, 817). Four species of Lycosid spiders were transferred to Trochosa: T. austrocaspia (Roewer, 955), T. flavichelis (Roewer, 955), T. nava (Roewer, 955), T. persia (Roewer, 955).
