Abstract: Purpose: To formulate and evaluate glibenclamide (GB)-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) for controlled release. Methods: GB-loaded PLGA NPs were prepared by solvent evaporation technique using methanol/dichloromethane (2:1) and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effect of stirring speed (250, 1000, 1500 and 2500 rpm) and drug: polymer ratio (1:1, 1: 2, 1:3 and 2:1) on particle size, size distribution, zeta potential, drug loading, encapsulation efficiency and drug release was also studied. Results: Stable NPs were successfully prepared without any incompatibility, as indicated by TEM and DSC studies, respectively. As polymer and drug concentrations, and stirring speed increased, particle size, drug loading and encapsulation efficiency also increased. Increase in polymer concentration sustained drug release but reverse was obtained as drug concentration increased. Conclusion: Controlled release biodegradable glibenclamide NPs can be efficiently prepared by emulsification solvent evaporation method suitably modulating processing variables.

The variables affecting determination of ultra trace levels of uranium (VI) in aqueous samples by differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry were examined in detail using Hg-thin film modified carbon paste and multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) incorporated carbon paste electrode. Carbon paste electrode prepared in the laboratory was modified with Hg thin film and used as the working electrode. MWCNT was incorporated into the carbon paste for enhancement in sensitivity of the measurements. Electrochemical response for the uranium (VI) reduction peak was found to be well resolved on the thin mercury film modified carbon paste surface and also with the MWCNT modification. Characteristics of the adsorption preconcentration process were investigated using electrochemical impedance measurements. Electrochemical signals were observed to be enhanced on MWCNT modification of the carbon paste.

Classical and Thermodynamic work fluctuations

Abstract: We have studied the nature of classical work ($W_{c}$) and thermodynamic work ($W$) fluctuations in systems driven out of equilibrium both in transient and time periodic steady state. As the observation time of trajectory increases, we show that the number of trajectories which exhibit excursions away from the typical behaviour i.e., $W_{c}<0$, $W<\Delta F$ and dissipated heat $Q<0$ decreases as anticipated for macroscopic time scales. Analytical expressions for such trajectories are obtained. Trajectory for which $W_{c}<0$ may not correspond to $W<\Delta F$ or $Q<0$. The applicability of steady state fluctuation theorems are discussed in our linear as well as nonlinear models.
A charged particle in a magnetic field - Jarzynski Equality

Abstract: We describe some solvable models which illustrate the Jarzynski theorem and related fluctuation theorems. We consider a charged particle in the presence of magnetic field in a two dimensional harmonic well. In the first case the centre of the harmonic potential is translated with a uniform velocity, while in the other case the particle is subjected to an ac force. We show that Jarzynski identity complements Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem on the absence of diamagnetism in equilibrium classical system.

Abstract: We study Langevin dynamics of a driven charged particle in the presence as well as in the absence of magnetic field. We discuss the validity of various work fluctuation theorems using different model potentials and external drives. We also show that one can generate an orbital magnetic moment in a nonequilibrium state which is absent in equilibrium.
Diagnosis of superficial mycoses by direct microscopy - A statistical evaluation

Abstract: A mycological study was undertaken in 250 cases of superficial mycotic infections, which included 210 cases of dermatophytosis, 18 cases of cutaneous candidiasis and 22 cases of tinea versicolor. The scrapings from all the cases were subjected to direct microscopic examination in 10% KOH solution and culture was done in case of candidiasis and dermatophytosis. Out of 250 cases direct microscopy was positive (KOH +ve) in 88 cases of dermatophytosis, 11 cases of candidiasis and all cases of tinea versicolor. Culture for dermatophytes and candida species in SDA medium were positive in 76 and 9 cases respectively. The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and the overall efficiency of the direct microscopy in the diagnosis of superficial mycotic infections were calculated to be 89.41%, 83.90%, 76.76%, 93.02% and 85.96% respectively.
Large amplitude forced vibration analysis of cross-beam system through energy method

Abstract: Large amplitude forced vibration behaviour of cross-beam system under harmonic excitation is studied, incorporating the effect of geometric non-linearity. The forced vibration analysis is carried out in an indirect way, in which the dynamic system is assumed to satisfy the force equilibrium condition at peak load value, thus reducing the problem to an equivalent static case. The two beams of the system are solved individually either by a direct substitution method employing successive relaxation technique or a multi-dimensional secant method, known as Broyden’s method. An iterative scheme, based on the reaction force between the two beams of the system and equality of vibration amplitude at the contact of two beams, is developed to obtain the response of the system under external harmonic excitation. The present method is validated through results generated in ANSYS 11.0. The system response is studied for various loading type and contact location of the beams. The results are presented in terms of plots of vibration amplitude of the contact point versus frequency of forcing excitation in dimensional plane.
