Exploring the Useful Reading Strategies among EFL College Students in Taiwan*  [PDF]

Abstract: The major purpose of this study was to understand what the reading strategies the EFL students use more or less among EFL college students in Taiwan. The study focused on three hundred and ninety-eight EFL college students coming from seven colleges located in the north, central, and south Taiwan. The research instrument was a questionnaire modified from Wan-Yin Lin’s Chinese reading strategies questionnaire (2005). The collected data used the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 13.0 to analyze the results. The findings of study included the following: first, higher grade students had more variety in using reading strategies than lower grade students; and second, the higher grade students tended to use integrated strategies more than lower grade students. According to the research findings, the researcher provided some recommendations, such as teachers could be better guiders to help students understand the importance of reading in language learning. They can not just focus on teaching listening and speaking, and should enhance the balance development in integrated reading strategies that helped students could read fluently any English materials.

Abstract: Characteristic of dispensed object withdeceleration parachute is analyzed as it flies based on dynamicmodel of the object. Its flight path, velocity and accelerator ofdispensed object are studied and try to find the factor to affectflies distance according to the compute result. It is found thatthe dynamic model is reasonable because its compute resultcoincides with the experiment result. Based on the dynamicmodel and the simulation program, both altitude of dispensingand parachute-opening and dispensing velocity can be set inadvance in order to meet the demand of experiment orapplication. Effect of Sputtering Pressure on Al-doped ZnO Films by DC Magnetron Sputtering

Abstract: Al-doped ZnO (AZO) films were deposited on the glass substrates by direct current magnetron sputtering using different sputtering pressures ranging from 0.2 Pa to 2.2 Pa. Microstructure, phase, electrical and optical properties of AZO films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), four-point probe and UV-Vis spectrophotometer, respectively. The results revealed that the deposition rate decreased with the increasing sputtering pressure according to Keller-Simmons model; the crystalline phase of all films was hexagonal wurtzite and the preferred orientation changed with the sputtering pressure; the surface morphology greatly depended on the sputtering pressure and the film deposited at 1.4 Pa showed low resistivity (8.4×10-4 Ω·cm), high average transmission and the highest Q, a criterion factor as the film figure of merit, which was the ratio between the normalized average transmission and the normalized resistivity.
Toll-like receptor 4 signaling promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition in human hepatocellular carcinoma induced by lipopolysaccharide

Abstract: Background The endotoxin level in the portal and peripheral veins of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients is higher and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a cell wall constituent of gram-negative bacteria, has been reported to inhibit tumor growth. However, in this study, we found that LPS-induced toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling was involved in tumor invasion and survival, and the molecular mechanism was investigated, Methods Four HCC cell lines and a splenic vein metastasis of the nude mouse model were used to study the invasion ability of LPS-induced HCC cells and the epithelia-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in vitro and in vivo. A total of 106 clinical samples from HCC patients were used to evaluate TLR4 expression and analyze its association with clinicopathological characteristics Results The in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that LPS could significantly enhance the invasive potential and induce EMT in HCC cells with TLR4 dependent. Further studies showed that LPS could directly activate nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling through TLR4 in HCC cells. Interestingly, blocking NF-κB signaling significantly inhibited transcription factor Snail expression and thereby inhibited EMT occurrence. High expression of TLR4 in HCC tissues was strongly associated with both poor cancer-free survival and overall survival in patients. Conclusions Our results indicate that TLR4 signaling is required for LPS-induced EMT, tumor cell invasion and metastasis, which provide molecular insights for LPS-related pathogenesis and a basis for developing new strategies against metastasis in HCC.

Abstract: Let $A$ be a finite set of integers. We show that if $k$ is a prime power or a product of two distinct primes then $$|A+k\cdot A|\geq(k+1)|A|-\lceil k(k+2)/4\rceil$$ provided $|A|\geq (k-1)^{2}k!$, where $A+k\cdot A=\{a+kb:\ a,b\in A\}$. We also establish the inequality $|A+4\cdot A|\geq 5|A|-6 $ for $|A|\geq 5$.
Conceptual Metaphor of Time in Transient Days by Zhu Ziqing: a case study

Abstract: This paper tries to explore the conceptual metaphor of time in Transient Days, an essay about time written by a famous Chinese writer, Zhu Ziqing, to address such problems as (1) Is there any linguistic evidence in Transient Days supporting the universality of the conceptual metaphor models (TIME IS A THING/ENTITY, TIME PASSING IS MOTION (THROUGHN SPACE) and TIME IS MONEY (A VALUABLE COMMODITY/LIMITED RESOURCE)) established by the previous studies?; and (2) Concerning the TIME PASSING IS MOTION model, are there more TIME PASSING IS A MOVING OBJECT than TIME PASSING IS MOTION OVER A LANDSCAPE metaphors in it? (2) En ce qui concerne le modèle que l’écoulement du temps est un mouvement, est-ce qu’il y a plus de métaphores sur le fait que l’écoulement du temps est un objet mouvant que sur le fait que l’écoulement du temps est un mouvement au dessus d’un paysage ? Monolingual, Bilingual Dictionaries and Language Study

Abstract: This paper tries to prove that, neither monolingual nor bilingual dictionary can, by themselves satisfy the needs of foreign language learners. Different stages of second language acquisition require different types of dictionaries, and they all have their own unique function in helping the learners to form a new language habit. This paper makes a review about present and past research and various scholarly points of views. For research approach, a quantitative method is adopted to investigate which kind of dictionary best meets the needs of students in different stages of foreign language acquisition. Finally, results and discussions are shown to conclude the investigation. Key words: monolingual dictionary, bilingual dictionary, language study Résumé: Le présent article tente de prouver que, ni le dictionnaire monolingue ni le dictionnaire bilingue ne peut satisfaire les besoins des apprenants de langues étrangères. Les différentes étapes de l’acquisition de la deuxième langue exigent de différents types de dictionnaires, et ils ont tous leur propre fonction pour aider les apprenants à former une nouvelle habitude langagière. Le présent article met en revue les recherches actuelles et passées ainsi que les points de vues académiques divers. Quant à l’approche de recherches, des méthodes quantitatives sont adoptées pour étudier quel type de dictionnaire répond le mieux aux besoins des étudiants dans les différentes phases de l’acquisition des langues étrangères. Finalement, on montre les résultats et les discussions pour conclure l’investigation.
