Abstract: High output powers and wide range tuning have been achieved in a sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector laser with an integrated semiconductor optical amplifier. Tilted amplifier and anti-reflection facet coating are used to suppress reflection. We have demonstrated sampled grating DBR laser with a tuning range over 38 nm, good wavelength coverage and peak output powers of more than 9 mW for all wavelengths.

Abstract: A novel optical etalon based on a strongly chirped sampled Bragg grating is proposed for fiber grating sensing demodulationg system applications. This kind of grating can be produced with proper chirp and sampled distribution parameter. The computer simulation and experimental result is presented. Compared with other conventional etalons,the etalon based on strongly chirped sampled Bragg grating has the advantages of good stability and simple production process,and also is promising for mass production.

Abstract: A simulation model of the fiber DBR (distributed Bragg reflector) laser with two sampled Bragg gratings (SBGs) as reflectors is established, with which the characteristics of the laser are analyzed in detail. The analysis mainly focuses on the change of the laser output characteristics with the wavelength and reflectivity of the front and back sampled fiber gratings. Because of the multi-channel reflection of SBGs, the side mode of such laser is always very obvious. The method for improving the SMSR(side mode suppression ratio) is suggested. And the wavelength tuning mechanism is also studied. Experiment has been carried out to confirm the analysis.
Analysis of Diffractive Properties of Grating Lens by Using Rigorous Model Theory

Abstract: Grating lenses have been widely applied to various optical system because of their special optical characteristics. Theoretically, the grating lens is subdivided into smaller sub-areas in this paper, and every sub-area is regarded as periodic micro-structure, according to lightly variance of adjacent linewidth. Rigorous modal theory is used for analyzing their diffractive properties in sequence, and finally total diffractive efficiency of grating lenses can be easily obtained. Numerical simulation is performed to calculate diffractive efficiency of grating lens, which is used for beam sampling and harmonic separation in high energy laser system. It shows that results computed by the method in this paper are accurate and valid. In addition, fabrication-process-tolerance effects on diffractive efficiency are also discussed. In experiment, a beam sampling grating with diameter 100 mm was fabricated, and its experimental diffractive efficiency is consistent with result calculated by the method in this paper.

Abstract: Novel multi-wavelength laser, based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and cascaded two-stage sampled fibre gratings, is theoretically and experimentally investigated in this paper. The reflection spectrum of the sampled fibre grating and lasing output spectrum are calculated. Exploiting SOA and sampled fibre grating manufactured by our laboratory,a multi-wavelength laser with 11 wavelengths, in which the output power difference is smaller than 1dB, is achieved. Compared with the scheme based on the ordinary sampled fibre grating, more lasing wavelengths and more uniform lasing output power can be achieved in the novel scheme, which can be concluded from both theoretical calculation and experimental analysis.

Abstract: The beam sampling grating (BSG) is one kind of important diffractive optical elements which is used in sampling and diagnosis. In terminal optical system of the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) system, the modulation produced by strong laser in the near field, may cause laser induced damage to the BSG. It makes the element work abnormally. In order to provide the theoretical basis for protecting this kind of optical element from laser induced damage under the strong laser condition, this paper uses the Fourier modal theory to carry on the numerical simulation of the interior modulation for BSG in near field. The results indicate that the interior modulation of BSG is weak, but the optical field distribution is still not even, thus in these areas the damage probability is higher than in other positions. Moreover, through the fabrication error analysis of BSG, the relationship between modulation in near field and fabrication error was obtained. The computed results indicate that the depth error and the duty cycle error of grooves affect the modulation of the light beam in near field, but the influence of groove depth error is larger than the duty cycle error. However, if the groove depth error does not exceed a definite value, its modulation also remains on a lower level. Therefore the BSG can still work in the ICF driver normally.

Abstract: A novel method for fabricating sampled amplitude mask is presented, the featureof which is the varying sampling period and fixed sampling duty ratio. By usingsuch an amplitude mask, sampled fiber gratings with different wavelength spacings of reflectivity peaks can be easily fabricated. So the novel method has the advantages of reduced fabrication cost and improved versatility of sampled grating. The possible disadvantages of the method are also discussed. Wavelength selectable fiber laser with vernier wavelength tuning mechanism is also demonstrated by the sampled fiber grating.

Abstract: A complex-coupled DFB laser with sampled grating has been designed and fabricated. The method uses the +1st order reflection of the sampled grating for laser single-mode operation. The typical threshold current of the sampled grating based DFB laser is 25 mA, and the optical output is about 10 mW at the injected current of 100 mA. The lasing wavelength of the device is 1.5385 mm, which is the +1st order wavelength of the sampled grating.

Abstract: The impact of the sampled grating in a distributed Bragg reflector laser on the tuning range,output power,and side-mode suppression ratio(SMSR) are investigated in detail.Design criteria are proposed,and the results are applied practically.The reflection spectrum of the sampled grating in the device is consistent with our design and a 30nm quasi-continuous-wave tuning range with SMSR>30dB is achieved.
