Estrutura e desenvolvimento dos tricomas secretores em folhas de Piper regnellii (Miq.) C. DC. var. regnellii (Piperaceae)
Brazilian Journal of Botany , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-84041999000200002
Abstract: piper regnellii has two types of trichomes: pearl glands and sac-like trichomes. both secretory trichomes originate from the protoderm of the leaf primordium and reach maturity in the young leaves found in the shoot apex. the pearl glands are more abundant on the abaxial surface, while the sac-like trichomes cover completely both young leaf blade. the density of both trichomes decreases during blade expansion, being scarce in the adult leaf. the pearl glands are composed of a basal cell and an apical cell whose shape ranges from semi-globular to spatula-like. secretion release occurs after rupture of the distended cuticle. the sac-like trichomes are composed of a basal cell, 1-2 stalked cells and an apical conical cell parallel to the leaf surface. the secretion is accumulated in minute subcuticular spaces. no cuticular ruptures have been observed.
Estrutura e desenvolvimento dos tricomas secretores em folhas de Piper regnellii (Miq.) C. DC. var. regnellii (Piperaceae)
Brazilian Journal of Botany , 1999,

Abstract: the main objectives of this paper are (1) to show the academic community the portvix, a project which deals with the speech of the city of vitória, capital of espírito santo; (2) to summarize the works concluded and in development, based on data from this project, and (3) to speak about the alignment of vitória's speech with the national setting and about characteristics that individualize it. the theory of language variation and change guides the organization of the sample and, in general, the analysis of several variable phenomena, namely the variation between verb forms of conditional and of imperfect indicative; variable expression of the future tense; use of the gerund; variation of final adverbial clauses; alternation between the expressions nós/a gente (we); expression of anaphoric direct object; nominal agreement; verbal agreement; grammatical expression of imperative form; alternation of indicative/subjunctive form; variation of second pronouns, specially among você/cê/ocê; presence or absence of definitive article in front anthroponyms and possessive pronouns. common sense observations and test results evidenced that there are aspects that align the speech of vitória-es with the national setting, confirming the generality of some phenomena, but there are other characteristics that allow individualization of the capixaba speech (speech from the state of espírito santo) against the three states with which espírito santo establishes boundaries: rio de janeiro, bahia, and especially minas gerais.

Abstract: The heat shock protein of Toxoplasma gondii (TgHSP70) is a parasite virulence factor that is expressed during T. gondii stage conversion. To verify the effect of dexamethasone (DXM)-induced infection reactivation in the TgHSP70-specific humoral immune response and the presence of the protein in the mouse brain, we produced recombinant TgHSP70 and anti-TgHSP70 IgY antibodies to detect the protein, the specific antibody and levels of immune complexes (ICs) systemically, as well as the protein in the brain of resistant (BALB/c) and susceptible (C57BL/6) mice. It was observed higher TgHSP70-specific antibody titers in serum samples of BALB/c compared with C57BL/6 mice. However, the susceptible mice presented the highest levels of TgHSP70 systemically and no detection of specific ICs. The DXM treatment induced increased parasitism and lower inflammatory changes in the brain of C57BL/6, but did not interfere with the cerebral parasitism in BALB/c mice. Additionally, DXM treatment decreased the serological TgHSP70 concentration in both mouse lineages. C57BL/6 mice presented high expression of TgHSP70 in the brain with the progression of infection and under DXM treatment. Taken together, these data indicate that the TgHSP70 release into the bloodstream depends on the death of the parasites mediated by the host immune response, whereas the increased TgHSP70 expression in the brain depends on the multiplication rate of the parasite.

Abstract: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) is a clinical condition characterized by chronic airflow obstruction or limitation, which generates mechanical disadvantage, causing muscle weakness and recruitment of accessory inspiratory muscles. skeletal muscle dysfunction is one of the most important extrapulmonary manifestations, leading to decrease in functional capacity. the aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of respiratory and quadriceps femoris muscle training on functional performance of patients with copd. nine subjects aged between 49 and 76 years old were assessed as to maximal respiratory pressures (by spirometry), lower limb muscle strength (by maximal repetition test), functional capacity (by the shuttle walk test) and quality of life (by the sf-36 questionnaire), before and after the protocol of muscle strengthening for inspiratory muscles, quadriceps femoris and abdominal muscles. exercise program sessions took place twice a week for two months. results showed improvement in all assessed variables, with significant difference (p<0.05) in maximal inspiratory pressure values. the proposed respiratory and quadriceps muscle training has thus proved beneficial for the functional performance of patients with copd, suggesting the use of respiratory and peripheral muscle strengthening as co-adjuvant resource in the treatment of these individuals.

Abstract: type 1 a diabetes mellitus (t1ad) results from the autoimmune destruction of the insulin producing pancreatic beta-cells. the largest contribution to genetic susceptibility comes from several genes located in the major histocompatibility complex on chromosome 6p21.3 (iddm1 locus), accounting for at least 40% of the family aggregation of this disease. the highest-risk human leukocyte antigen hla genotype for t1ad is dr3-dqa1*0501-dqb1*0201/dr4-dqa1*0301-dqb1*0302, whereas -dr15-dqa1*0102-dqb1*0602 haplotype is associated with dominant protection. three other t1d loci associated with predisposition are the variable number for tandem repeats (vntr) near the insulin gene (iddm2), which accounts to 10% of genetic susceptibility, the cytotoxic t-lymphocyte-associated antigen (ctla-4)(iddm 12) and the protein tyrosine phosphatasis nonreceptor-type 22 (ptpn22). many other gene suspected to predispose to autoimmunity have been investigated. t1ad is frequently associated with autoimmune thyroid disease, celiac disase, addison′s disease and many other autoimmune diseases, characterized by organ-specific autoantibodies and related to the same genetic background. using these autoantibodies, organ specific autoimmunity may be detected before the development of clinical disease preventing significant morbidity.
