Outcome of Open Surgery for Urinary Tract Calculi at Jos University Teaching Hospital

Abstract: Background: Urinary tract calculi are common affliction of humans. Surgeries to remove stones from the urinary tract are among the oldest forms of open surgery. These surgeries have evolved and minimally invasive procedures are now the choice procedures. Developing countries still depend on open surgeries to treat urinary stone disease due to lack of equipment or high cost. This study aims to review the treatment outcome of open stone surgery in a tertiary health institution in North-Central Nigeria. Materials and methods: A retrospective review of open surgeries for urinary tract calculi done between December 2007 and December 2011 was done and demographics, type of open procedure , stone free rates and complications of surgeries were analysed with Epi-info 3.4.1. Being stone-free was defined as complete extraction of stone which had been preoperatively diagnosed on Intravenous Urogram (IVU) and/or Computed Tomogram Urography (CTU). Results: Forty-seven open procedures for urinary stone disease were done. Age range was 3-81 years with a mean of 40.95±17.39 years. Five (10.6%) Nephrolithotomies, 11(23.4%) Pyelolithotomies, 9(19.1%) Ureterolithotomies, 20(42.6%) Cystolithotomies, 1(2.1%) Nephrectomy and 1(2.1%) Poucholithotomy was done. There was 100% stone-free rate for all the procedures except Pyelolithotomies where stone free rate was 90.9 %. There was a complication rate of 31.9% which included urinary tract infections (UTI), incisional hernia and surgical site infections. Conclusion: For developing countries open stone surgery still remains the main option of treatment. Stone free rates are high following open surgeries, but these surgeries are inundated with morbidities.
Low Complex System for Levitating Ferromagnetic Materials

Abstract: This paper primarily presents detailed design and implementation of a low complex magnetic levitation system which can be used in laboratory for levitation experiments. The system transfer function was derived from the coenergy and the mathematical model of the state space representation was obtained. The mathematical model showed that, the system is highly non-linear and inherently unstable. Based on simulation, a low complex circuit was designed and implemented to stabilize the system, using MATLAB control tool-box. The developed controller was simple, cheap and effective, capable of controlling weights of different masses at various distances as compared to some controllers in literature.

Abstract: In this paper, the authors numerically analyzed the analytical relationships between angstrom coefficients and optical properties of aerosols to the existing data extracted from OPAC at the spectral length of 0.25 μm to 2.5 μm at eight relative humidity for desert, urban, marine clean and continental clean aerosols. That is apart from their relationships with the wavelength that was determined, in this paper their relation with respect to aerosols’ type and RHs are determined. The properties extracted are scattering, absorption, and extinction coefficients and single scattering albedo. The results showed that the extinction and single scattering albedo are correct for all the aerosols but single scattering co-albedo is satisfied for only sahara and continental clean.

Abstract: In this paper, the authors extracted and investigated the effect of relative humidity (RH) on some microphysical and optical properties of continental polluted aerosols from OPAC (Optical Properties of Aerosols and Clouds) at the spectral range of 0.25 μm to 2.5 μm and eight relative humidities (0%, 50%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 95%, 98%, and 99%). The microphysical properties extracted were radii, volume, number and mass mix ratios as functions of RH while the optical properties were optical depth, extinction, scattering and absorption coefficients single scattering albedo, refractive indices and asymmetric parameters also at eight RHs. Using the microphysical properties, effective hygroscopic growth factors and effective radii of the mixtures were determined while using optical properties we determined the enhancement parameters, effective refractive indices and angstrom coefficients. Using the effective hygroscopic growth, we determined the dependence of the effective hygroscopicity parameter as a function of RH, while using enhancement parameters; we determined the effect of humidification factor on RH and wavelengths. The effective hygroscopic growth and enhancement parameters were then parameterized using some models to determine the effective hygroscopicity parameter, bulk hygroscopicity and humidification factors. We observed that the data fitted the models very well. The effective radii decrease with the increase in RH while the effective hygroscopic growth increases with the increase in RH, and this is in line with the increase in angstrom parameters, and this shows increase in mode size with the increase in RH. The angstrom coefficients show that the mixture has a bimodal type of distribution with the dominance of fine mode particles.

The effective radii increases with the increase in RH, while Angstrom coefficients decrease with the increase in RH and this signifies the dominance of coarse mode particles. The angstrom coefficients show that the mixture has bimodal type of distribution and the mode size increases with the increase in RH.
Study on the Vessel Elements and Its Perforation Plate of Secondary Xylem in Ziziphus mauritiana

Abstract: The vessel elements of secondary xylem in Ziziphus mauritiana was observed by bio-microscope image analysis system and micrography.The results show that there are various patterns of vessel elements and three types of perforation plates: both ends of the vessel element aresimple perforation plate;one end is simple perforation and the other is scalariform perforation;the simple perforation with cilia in Z.mauritiana.It is discussed that the ontogeny and phylogenesis of vessel elements in Z.mauri-tiana.The new evidence was provide on the phylogenesis of perforation.
Study of Vessel Elements in Pteris vittata

Abstract: The vessel elements in rachis of Pteris vittata are observed and studied in this paper. The result shows that all of the vessel elements are very long. The scalariform perforation plates which are very long and gradient are in the either of end wall of vessel elements, there are a lot of perforations without pit membrane in these plates. The scalariform perforation plate in the P. vittata differs greatly from the scalariform pitting in side wall in conformation and structure. It is discussed that the vessel elements and the scalariform perforation plate in P. vittata.

Abstract: The vessel element in the secondary xylem of Casuarina cunninghamiana was observed under an electron microscope. Three types of the vessel elements were found, a tail on each side, one tail only and no tail. Four types of perforation plates were present as follows: the scalariform perforation plate, the simple perforation plate, the scalariform-simple perforation plate, the simple and scalariform perforation plates symmetrically arranging on the same side of vessel, as well as some transitional types. The evolution of perforation plates in the vessel elements is discussed.

Abstract: The mononuclear title complex, [Cu(C17H14N2O3)(C5H5N)], was synthesized by the reaction of CuCl2·2H2O with N-(4-oxo-4-phenylbutan-2-ylidene)benzohydrazide (H2L). The central CuII atom exhibits a distorted square-planar coordination geometry, defined by two O atoms, one N atom from the ligand and one pyridine N atom with Cu—N distances of 1.874 (4) and 1.963 (4) , while the Cu—O distances are 1.857 (3) and 1.890 (3) . An intramolecular O—H...N interaction occurs.
