Teachers’ Creativity in Posing Statistical Problems from Discrete Data  [PDF]

Abstract: Choosing a quality problem in mathematics is a challenge for many teachers. Teachers cannot rely on textbooks for good problems. They have to be able to pose their own problems in order to promote mathematical thinking among students. This study was conducted to explore the creativity of 175 teachers in terms of fluency, flexibility, and originality in posing statistical problems. Participants consisted of secondary school teachers from twenty schools in Peninsular Malaysia. Teaching experience was ranged from 1 to 33 years. The features of the problems posed by these teachers were also studied. The participants were provided a stimulus, which was a set of ungrouped discrete data, and they were asked to pose as many problems as they could. The posed statistical problems were supposed to promote mathematical thinking and to increase students’ understanding. Findings showed that participants were able to pose a total of 270 (74%) statistical problems within the time given. The mean of the creativity score was 11.08 (s.d. = 6.76). Analysis showed no significant difference in creativity between gender and the value of t = –.346, p = .73, where p > .05. Analysis showed significant differences in the teachers’ creativity scores for three groups of teachers: F (2172) = 6.83, p = .001, p < .05.The results also showed that 115 (31.5%) posed problems focuses on the statistical content measure of central tendency. The study provided expo- sure to the teachers to pose problems that can trigger students’ thinking in solving statistical problems.
Makespan Algorithms and Heuristic for Internet-Based Collaborative Manufacturing Process Using Bottleneck Approach  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper presents makespan algorithms and scheduling heuristic for an Internet-based collaborative design and manufacturing process using bottleneck approach. The collaborative manufacturing process resembles a permutation re-entrant flow shop environment with four machines executing the process routing of M1,M2,M3,M4,M3,M4 in which the combination of the last three processes of M4,M3,M4 has high tendency of exhibiting dominant machine character-istic. It was shown that using bottleneck-based analysis, effective makespan algorithms and constructive heuristic can be developed to solve for near-optimal scheduling sequence. At strong machine dominance level and medium to large job numbers, this heuristic shows better makespan performance compared to the NEH.

Abstract:

In 1999, Molodtsov introduced the concept of soft set theory as a general mathematical tool for dealing with uncertainty. Alkhazaleh and Salleh (2011) define the concept of soft expert sets where the user can know the opinion of all experts in one model and give an application of this concept in decision making problem. So in this paper, we generalize the concept of a soft expert set to fuzzy soft expert set, which will be more effective and useful. We also define its basic operations, namely complement, union, intersection, AND and OR. We give an application of this concept in decision making problem. Finally, we study a mapping on fuzzy soft expert classes and its properties.

Abstract: This article is an initial study relating to the thought of renewing and modernism in Malaysia which undergoing the process of transformation since the beginning of the twentieth century till nowadays. This type of thought can be ascertained through the rise of individuals and organizations that uphold such stand, ideas and ideologies. This study basically presents the proper and concise understanding of the concept Islamic modernism such as characteristics, form, nature, development and history. Modernism then, examined specifically in the Malay Archipelago and Malaysia through the political thought of UMNO and PAS that struggle for the Malays and Islam. The results show that both of the political parties tried to accommodate the notion of modernism in practical and real context that influencing much by the political purposes and struggles.

Production of Natural Coagulant from Moringa Oleifera Seed for Application in Treatment of Low Turbidity Water  [PDF]

Abstract: This study focused on developing an efficient and cost effective processing technique for Moringa oleifera seeds to produce natural coagulant for use in drinking water treatment. The produced natural coagulant can be used as an alternative to aluminum sulphate and other coagulants and used worldwide for water treatment. This study investigates processing Moringa oleifera seeds to concentrate the bio-active constituents which have coagulation activity. Moringa oleifera seeds were processed for oil extraction using electro thermal soxhlet. Isolation and purification of bio-active constituents using chromatography technique were used to determine the molecular weight of the bio-active constituents. The molecular weight of bio-active constitu-ents found to be in a low molecular weight range of between 1000 – 6500 Dalton. The proposed method to isolate and purify the bio-active constituents was the cross flow filtration method, which produced the natu-ral coagulant with very simple technique (oil extraction; salt extraction; and microfiltration through 0.45 µm). The turbidity removal was up to 96.23 % using 0.4 mg/L of processed Moringa oleifera seeds to treat low initial turbidity river water between 34-36 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU) without any additives. The microfiltration method is considered to be a practical method which needs no chemicals to be added com-pared to other researchers proposed methods. The natural coagulant produced was used with low dosages to get high turbidity removal which considered to be a breakthrough in this study and recommended to be scaled up for industry level. The product is commercially valuable at the same time it is minimizing the cost of water treatment.
Simple Motion Evasion Differential Game of Many Pursuers and One Evader with Integral Constraints on Control Functions of Players

Abstract: We consider an evasion differential game of many pursuers and one evader with integral constraints in the plane. The game is described by simple equations. Each component of the control functions of players is subjected to integral constraint. Evasion is said to be possible if the state of the evader does not coincide with that of any pursuer. Strategy of the evader is constructed based on controls of the pursuers with lag. A sufficient condition of evasion from many pursuers is obtained and an illustrative example is provided.
Placement and Routing in VLSI design Problem Using Single Row Routing Technique

Abstract: Two major problems are involved in VLSI design, namely, the placement of components and routing between these components. Single row routing problem is a combinatorial optimization problem of significant importance for the design of complex VLSI multi layer printed circuit boards (PCB's). The design involves conductor routing that makes all the necessary wiring and interconnections between the PCB modules, such as pins, vias, and backplanes. In very large systems, the number of interconnections may exceed tens of thousands. Therefore, we have to optimize the wire routing and interconnections and thus determine the efficient designs. Kernighan-Lin algorithm, traveling salesman problem, simulated annealing algorithm and single row routing problem are used to find the best design. Included here are some simple examples to find the results. A simulation program using Microsoft Visual C++ is developed to simulate the single row routing problem using the simulated annealing algorithm.
