No culture shock? Addressing the Achilles heel of modern Bible translations
S.J. Joubert
Acta Theologica , 2002,
Abstract: Modern Bible translations are often more sensitive to the needs of their intended readers than to the right of biblical texts to be heard on their own terms as religious artefacts from the ancient Mediterranean world. Since all biblical documents linguistically embody socio-religious meanings derived from ancient Mediterranean societies, they also need to be experienced as different, even alien, by modern readers. Without an initial culture shock in encountering a Bible translation modern people are held prisoners by Western translations of the Bible. Therefore, translations should instil a new sensitivity among modern readers to the socio-cultural distance between them and the original contexts of the Bible. In order to help facilitate this historical awareness, a new generation of "value added" translations must, in creative and responsible ways, begin to provide a minimum amount of cultural information to assist modern readers in assigning legitimate meanings to the linguistic signs encapsulated on the pages of the Bible. Continuous Hybrid Methods for Direct Solution of General Second Order Differential Equations
S.J. Kayode
Research Journal of Applied Sciences , 2012,
Abstract: In this study, a two-step zero stable hybrid Numerov type method is developed for direct solution of general ordinary differential equations of the form The method based on predictor-corrector approach, is consistent and zero-stable. Efforts are made to develop a predictor having the same order as that of the corrector, thereby reducing the consequential effects of the predictor on the accuracy of the method. The accuracy of the method is tested with linear and non-linear problems.

Poorhashemi S.J
Journal of Dental Medicine , 2004,
Abstract: Statement of Problem: The accomplishment of oral and dental health is one of the most important goals in preventive dentistry influenced by the people’s knowledge and attitudes. Health system personel are the group able to play the most important role in this field affecting the society under their control directly. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of health system personel, working in Ghom province, about oral and dental health. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, knowledge and attitudes of all 187 personel working in the health system center of Ghom province were investigated through a questionnaire including 10 questions on knowledge and 10 other ones on the attitudes of subjects studied. Data were subjected to ANOVA, Tukey and correlation tests. Results: The knowledge of females was higher, compared to males showing a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). There was a positive correlation between subjects’ knowledge and their level of education, age and work duration (P<0.05). Conclusion: Generally, the level of knowledge and attitude of the personel working in health centers in Ghom province was acceptable but not an ideal one and the continuity of training and re-education courses seemed necessary.

Die belangrikheid van Kerkgeskiedenis en Kerkreg in die teologiese opleiding en vorming van studente
S.J. Botha
HTS Theological Studies/Teologiese Studies , 2009, DOI: 10.4102/hts.v58i4.708
Abstract: The importance of Church History and Church Polity in the training and forming of theological students The Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk always has always been adamant that its ministers should be trained and formed in a theological faculty at a recognized university, where all the disciplines of theology are lectured. At a recent Church synod, the importance of Church History was questioned. In this paper the argument that Church History is not just important in the curriculum of theology, but indeed indispensable, is put forward. As Church Polity forms part of the Department of Church History at the Faculty of Theology (University of Pretoria), it is also included in the argument.
