Evaluation of Hepatoprotective Activity of Argemone mexicana Aerial Part Extracts on CCL4 Induced Liver Damage in Wistar Rats

Abstract: This study is carried out on Wistar rats to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of Argemone mexicana L aerial part extracts against CCL4 induced acute liver damages. The areal part of the plant was extracted by methanol and water using soxhlet, rotary evaporator and freeze drying apparatus. Hepatic injury was achieved by injecting 3 mL/kg s.c. of CCL4 in equal volume proportion with olive oil. The aqueous and methanol extracts of Argemone mexicana areal part were given at different doses, 100, 200, 400 mg/kg/day Methanol extract, and 400 mg/kg/day orally of aqueous extract for 5 days under CCL4 induction at 3rd day. The significance of differences between means was compared among the groups using Independent-sample T-test with probability value. The methanol extract at 100 mg/kg offered significant hepatoprotective activity (p<0.05) by reducing the serum marker enzyme, like Serum Glutamate Oxaloacetate Transaminase (SGOT), Serum Glutamate Pyrovate Transaminase (SGPT) and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP). Histopathlogical studies further confirmed the hepatoprotective activity of 100 mg/kg methanol extract. Argemone mexicana L. at dose 100 mg/kg indeed has a reasonable potential in healing liver parenchyma and regeneration of liver cells hence it may acts as a potent liver tonic. The results obtained were compared with silymarin (70 mg/kg.oral), the standard drug, which shown recovery toward normalization almost like that of silymarin, therefore, we recommend for further studies to isolate the pure component and the mechanism that displayed the hepatoprotective activity for making standard drug.

Abstract: micromechanical characterization of interfacial properties of non-conforming rough surfaces in contact was performed by a method based on ultrasonic waves. the method to estimate the interfacial properties is based on ultrasonic spectroscopy of signals reflected from the interface. ultrasonic results are complemented with probabilistic contact mechanics to model the normal and tangential interfacial stiffness (kn and kt) constants for different degrees of closure. the results show that a single set of stiffness constants kn and kt is sufficient to describe the dynamic response of the interface independently of the incident angle of the ultrasonic waves. plastic deformation of the rough interface is studied using the same ultrasonic method. experimental results indicate that the hysteretic effect observed by repetitive loading cycles is an indication of plastic deformation at the asperity summits with greater height values. the phenomenon is explained using micromechanical and probabilistic models. the results show the possibility of using the method to estimate the interfacial stiffness, presence of plastic deformation, and the real contact area, which in the past have been impossible to measure accurately.

Abstract: The statistics results of determining the roughness of asphalt concrete pavements using the method of the sandy spots and elektroreactive rapid method is described. The hypothesis of actual measurement of roughness and equality mean values is confirmed. / Приведены статистические данные результатов определения шероховатости асфальтобетонных покрытий с применением метода песчаного пятна и электроемкостного экспресс-метода. Abstract: Caracterización micromecánica de propiedades interfaciales de superficies rugosos no-conformantes fue realizado mediante un método basado en ondas ultrasónicas. El método para estimar las propiedades interfaciales hace uso de espectroscopia ultrasónica de se ales reflejadas desde la interfase. Resultados de las pruebas con ultrasonidos se complementan con análisis probabilístico y mecánica del contacto para modelar las constantes de rigidez normal y tangencial de (KN y KT ) para diferentes grados de acercamiento de las superficies. Los resultados muestran que un par único de constantes de rigidez KNy KT son suficientes para describir la respuesta dinámica de la interfase independientemente del ángulo de incidencia de la onda ultrasónica. Se estudió la deformación plástica de la interfase rugosa usando el mismo método ultrasónico. Los resultados experimentales indican que el efecto histerético observado durante la aplicación de cargas repetitivas es un indicador de la deformación plástica en las crestas de las asperezas con valores de alturas mayores. El fenómeno se explica usando modelos probabilísticos y micromecánicos. Los resultados muestran la posibilidad de usar el método para estimar el área de contacto real, el cual hasta ahora ha sido imposible de medir.

Abstract: Details of the management of patients receiving oral anticoagulants (vitamin K antagonists) for a long time and needed in dental treatment are discussed. Assessment of bleeding and thromboembolism risk in the perioperative continuation or termination of warfarin therapy is shown. Potential of the local hemostatic agents is specified. Modifications of the patient dental health card are offered to prevent complications associated with blood clotting disorders.
Effect of processing methods on nutrient retention and contribution of cassava (manihot spp) to nutrient intake of Nigerian consumers

Abstract: There is a global drive for promotion of indigenous foods and feedstuffs as a means of dietary diversification in meeting dietary needs of the people living the traditional lifestyle. Cassava diets constitute a staple source of energy for most Nigerians. However, there is little or no documentation on the nutrient composition, effect of processing methods on nutrient retention and contribution of these diets to nutrient intake of consumers. Nutrition information on contribution of a particular food or diet to nutrient intake of consumers is of paramount importance in food labeling and consumer acceptability. This study, therefore, aimed at providing information on nutrient composition and effect of processing methods on nutrient retention and contribution of some diets prepared from cassava. Fresh cassava roots were obtained from a farm in Alegongo area, Akobo, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Proximate and mineral composition of prepared samples was determined alongside the market samples using standard methods of Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, respectively. The crude protein, lipid, fibre and ash contents of fresh cassava roots were low (0.9, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.4g/100g, respectively). Its mineral profile was: potassium 166.6, sodium 222.1, calcium 25.0, magnesium12.5, phosphorus 57.3, iron 1.7, and zinc 2.1 mg/100g sample. Processing cassava roots into various products improved availability of nutrients such as protein (1.3g in gari to 2.6g in fufu and amala), ash (0.5g in abacha to 2.6g in eba), potassium (234.5mg in three days fermented garri to 473.2mg in two days fermented lafun), calcium (22.7mg in eba to 67.3mg in two days fermented lafun), iron (1.0 – 4.3mg), zinc (2.5 – 6.7mg), as well as their calories (p<0.05). A 100g portion of raw and processed cassava into amala, eba, fufu and abacha yielded 140.5, 289, 284, 312, and 358 kilocalories of energy, respectively. Soaking fresh cassava for more than two days resulted in significant reduction in mineral content of prepared diets due to leaching. 100g portion of various diets can contribute between 12.3 to 16.1% energy, 6 to 14% iron, and up to 28% zinc to % RDAs of consumers.
Field Isolation of Mycoplasma capripneumoniae in Central Zone of Tanzania

Abstract: An investigation was done on outbreak of acute respiratory disease in goats in Central zone of Tanzania, the investigation involved 3 districts. (Mpwapwa, Dodoma and Kilosa districts). The study involved goats from the field, livestock markets and abattoirs. Samples from clinical and pathological examination of goats with respiratory distress were subjected to microbiological and molecular analysis. A total of 96 lungs samples, 96 lymph node and 59 pleural fluids were collected for microbiological and molecular evaluation. Media used were Hayflick’s medium (H25P) and commercial freeze-dried diagnostic medium for mycoplasma isolation, blood and MacConkey agar for bacteria other than mycoplasma. Mycoplasma isolates were confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Restriction Enzyme Analysis (REA). Mycoplasma capripneumoniae was isolated from 47 samples and Pasteurella multocida from 13 samples. Eighty one samples subjected to molecular analysis were positive for M. capripneumoniae. M. capripneumoniae was isolated from samples collected from all the study districts. The results of this study indicate that outbreaks of respiratory disease in the study areas were predominantly due to contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP). This provides additional information on the distribution of the disease in the country. The results of PCR/REA demonstrate the usefulness of this diagnostic technique in the investigation of field outbreaks of CCPP even when isolation of the causative agent is not possible. The isolation and identification of M. capripneumoniae in central zone confirm the presence of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia in the zone.
Agro-diversity of East Siang-Arunachal Pradesh, Eastern Himalaya

Abstract: Besides cultivation and semi-domestication of crops, Adi people collect lot of wild vegetables from nearby forests to meet their daily requirement. Qualitative and quantitative data in the present study were collected through field survey and personal interview using standard questionnaires. Altogether, 152 plant species belonging to 95 genera and 39 families were encountered during the study period. They were broadly divided into three categories as cultivated crops (72), semi-domesticated plants (41) and wild plants (39). Vegetables and pulses formed the most frequent mode of uses followed by spices and condiments, cereals and oil seeds. Species diversity based on the habit of the plant revealed that herbs were the most dominant habit followed shrubs, climbers and trees. Based on the plant part uses, leaves formed the most frequently used part followed by fruits, seeds etc. Cultivation is mainly of sustenance in nature rather than for commercial purposes. Most of the agricultural crops are imported from other states mainly Assam. Hence, commercial and proper cultivation of cultivated crops, semi-domesticated plants without losing the traditional value along with scientific approaches and sustainable collection of wild plants are very essential at this stage for welfare of the society in particular and region in general.
Effect of Polyethylene Glycol and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate on the Compaction Characteristics of Eudragit and Drug Release from its Matrix

Abstract: A study on the compaction characteristics of Eudragit l-100 both in the presence and in the absence of two commonly used additives, polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000) and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) was done. Eudragit granules, with and without the additives and drug were prepared separately by the wet granulation method and compacts were made at varying compression pressures. Compaction characteristics using Kawakita and Heckel analysis revealed a concentration dependent effect of the additives on the compressibility of Eudragit granules, with 2.5% PEG 6000 producing the largest effect and 5.0% PEG 6000, the least. Irrespective of the concentration of PEG 6000, the yield value increased, while SLS either had no effect or decreased the yield value of Eudragit granules. The highest yield value of 21.69 kN was produced by formulations containing 2.5% PEG 6000. While in some cases, the effect of the additive was slight, in others, it was drastic. The extent and nature of the effect depended on both the type and concentration of the additive used. SLS was found to increase the deformation of Eudragit more than PEG 6000. In vitro dissolution in simulated intestinal fluid as indicated by time for 70% drug release (t70%) shows that both additives modulated drug release, with 2.5 % SLS and 5% PEG 6000 enhancing drug release, while 5% SLS resulted in retarded but erratic drug release. The results of this study show that additives such as PEG 6000 and SLS affect the compaction characteristics of Eudragit l-100 and these were also found to affect the retardant behavior of Eudragit.
Spin Polarization in γd→ $vec{n}$ n→ p

Abstract: The study of spin observables is an important and active issue in low energy nuclear physics. In this contribution we report our recent calculation on the γd→ $vec{n}$ n→ p reaction at low photon energies. Our main goal is to calculate the neutron spin polarization Py′, but we also calculate the total cross section as well as the differential cross section. Although the results for the total and differential cross sections are found to agree reasonably well with the data, the results for Py′ show significant discrepancy with the experiment. We comment on this discrepancy.
