MAINTENANCE PERFORMANCE RESEARCH – PART 1: A REVIEW OF MODELS AND ISSUES

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The paper presents a comprehensive review of maintenance performance research. Articles on general surveys, system modelling, and specific applications in industries are reviewed. The scientific principles underlying maintenance performance research for the past 30 years are considered. The body of knowledge on maintenance performance is both quantitatively and qualitatively based. Of the quantitative approaches are economic and technical ratios, value-based and balanced scorecard, system audit, strategic, composite formulation, statistical, and partial maintenance productivity indices. The qualitative approaches include Luck's method, among others. Qualitative-based approaches are adopted in view of the inherent limitations of measuring a complex function such as maintenance effectively through quantitative models. Maintenance decision makers often come to the best conclusion using heuristics, backed up by qualitative assessment, supported by quantitative measures. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die artikel lewer ‘n omvattende oorsig van navorsing oor instandhouding. ‘n Aantal artikels oor algemene opnames, sisteemmodellering en nywerheidstoepassings word behandel. Die beginsels en praktyk van instandhoudingsvertoning moet deeglik verstaan word voordat die leser poog om navorsingsbronne ten beste te kan benut. Die versamelde kennis oor instandhoudingsvertoning is gebaseer op kwantitatiewe en kwalitatiewe beginsels. Die spektrum van kwantitatiewe metodes is uitgebreid en uiteenlopend. Die kwalitatiewe metodes word ook betrek om die kompleksiteit van instandhoudingsvraagstukke te behandel. Dit is dikwels so dat besluitvormers die beste oplossings vind op grond van heuristiese metodes gebaseer op kwalitatiewe en kwantitatiewe beskouings.
CONDITION BASED MAINTENANCE: STATUS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research on condition-based maintenance (CBM) spans disciplines and introduces a wide range of concepts. On the basis of statistical analysis of the papers published in major maintenance-related journals, the development of the field of CBM in the recent past is examined . Consequently, the goal of the paper is to review the scientific field of CBM in view of the high pace of proliferation of research articles in the domain. The CBM field began in the 1940s with primary efforts due to the railway companies in the western part of US. Today, CBM has developed into a truly worldwide discipline involving such fields as economics, management, insurance, maintenance, and production. This paper also discusses possible advancements and challenges for the future. A number of articles on general surveys, and specific applications in industries are reviewed. It is hoped that this article will contribute to the further advancement of CBM research. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Navorsing oor toestandgebaseerde instandhouding (TGI) maak gebruik van uiteenlopende dissiplines en 'n wye reeks van begrippe. 'n Kwantitatiewe ontleding van TGI-publikasies in vooraanstande instandhoudingsjoernale van die jongste tyd plaas die kollig op ontwikkeling van die vakgebied. Derhalwe is die doel van hierdie publikasie 'n ondersoek na die proliferasie en uiteenlopendheid van navorsingsaktiwitete op die TGI-terrein. TGI het in die vorige eeu in die veertigerjare ontstaan in die VSA se spoorvervoerbedryf. Tans is TGI 'n globale verskynsel wat gebruik maak van kennisvelde soos ekonomie, bestuur, versekering, instandhouding en produksie. Hierdie artikel behandel ook toekomstige TGI-ontwikkelings om sodoende vooruitgang te stimuleer.
A PRODUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT MODEL FOR HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Introduced several decades ago, productivity has rapidly developed into a powerful and versatile tool for both service and manufacturing sectors. Service represents the largest and fastest growing sector of developing economies. Yet, issues surrounding performance measurement in higher education institutions (HEI) presents an interesting and important research challenge often ignored. Rapid advances made during the past decade on problems associated with productivity have brought into an ever-sharper focus the need for a comprehensive and competent treatment of service productivity in HEI. The need for a treatment of this type has been long felt in research institutions, governments, and universities. This work investigates the feasibility of measuring the productivity of an academic department of a university using the NPC/NIIE model. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Produktiwiteitsmeting het oor die afgelope dekades snel ontwikkel tot ‘n kragtige alomtoepaslike gereedskap vir die diens- en vervaardigingsektore. Die meet van produktiwiteit van dienslewering by ho r onderwysinstansies is ‘n navorsingsuitdaging wat dikwels onaangeraak gelaat word. Ontwikkelings op die gebied van produktiwiteitsmeting beklemtoon die belangrikheid van die bogenoemde vraagstuk. Die resultate van die studie is bemoedigend. Onder andere toon dit hoedat produktiwiteitsdoelwitte bereik kan word en hoedat potensi le probleemareas aangespreek behoort te word.
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULING: DESCRIPTION, STATUS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the past several decades, there have been diverse and significant research activities on maintenance scheduling (MS) due to the multi-disciplinary dimension of the field. As a consequence of this diversity and multi-disciplinary involvement, the MS literature is at present fragmented, somewhat misleading, and deficient in informative articles that cover the length, breadth, and depth of scientific investigations in the field. This paper reviews the scientific discipline of MS, covering general surveys, models, and significant empirical studies and cases in MS research. The research reflects the multidisciplinary nature of work in the field and suggests areas for future investigation. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In die afgelope aantal dekades was daar uiteenlopende en aansienlike navorsingsbedrywigheid op die gebied van instandhoudingskedulering (IS) weens die multidissiplinêre dimensie van die gebied. As gevolg van hierdie diversiteit en multidissiplinêre betrokkenheid is die IS-literatuur tans gefragmenteer, ietwat misleidend en gebrekkig aan insiggewende artikels wat die lengte, breedte en diepte van wetenskaplike ondersoeke op die gebied dek. Hierdie artikel bied ‘n oorsig oor die wetenskaplike vakgebied van IS en dek algemene opnames, modelle en aansienlike empiriese ondersoeke en gevalle in IS-navorsing. Die navorsing weerspie l die multidissiplinêre uitkyk van werk op dié gebied en open gebiede vir toekomstige navorsing.
SIX SIGMA: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Despite stiff international competition in the global market, world-class manufacturers are increasing their market share and profits through low-cost production, waste reduction in manufacturing, production of high quality products, and exceptional customer service. Six Sigma has been successfully implemented in this regard. In this paper, a selected survey of Six Sigma literature is presented to illustrate the wide scope of the application of the concept. This could be of immense benefit to organizations’ top management who need to understand the critical variables and factors for the successful implementation of Six Sigma programmes, leading to substantial, sustainable long-term improvement in performance results, value for money, and effort. The paper presents motivated pointers – substantiated as far as possible by data and evidence – to key success factors, variables, and their interrelationships. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Sterk internasionale mededinging ten spyt verhoog wêreldklasvervaardigers hul markaandeel en winste via laekosteproduksie, skrootvermindering, die produksie van gehalteprodukte en die lewering van primadiens aan klante. Ses Sigma is in hierdie verband as gereedskap suksesvol ge mplimenteer. Die artikel behandel 'n gekeurde oorsig van Ses Sigmaliteratuur om sodoende die toepassingsveldwyde van die konsep te illustreer. Die artikel is nuttig vir organisasiebestuurders uit die oogpunt van veranderlikes en suksesfaktore wat deur die Ses Sigmametode tot substansi le en volhoubare langtermyn verbeterings van 'n onderneming kan lei.

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In recent years, the research scope of maintenance performance has been greatly expanded due to the pressure on maintenance organizations to deliver fruitful results in the current competitive business environment. In part 1 of this paper, treatment methods and maintenance performance models have been explored. In this concluding paper (part 2), the review further investigates maintenance performance models. The paper offers directions on future research in the area of maintenance performance. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: As gevolg van die ondervinding van verbruikers in die jongste tyd word organisasies wat instandhouding pleeg, genoop om deel te neem aan kontemporêre navorsing, wat belofte op verbeterde vertoning inhou. Die eerste gedeelte van hierdie artikel behandel metodes en modelle wat gebruik word. Die tweede gedeelte gaan dan voort om modelle van instandhoudingsvertoning te ondersoek. Die aangebode stof word ten slotte aangevul met raadgewing oor moontlike toekomstige navorsing.
TRACKING DISTORTIONS IN HOLISTIC MAINTENANCE MEASURES: A FRAMEWORK

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research on maintenance performance is seemingly well advanced in many domains. Traditional measures such as productivity, efficiency and effectiveness have many limitations that make them less applicable in today’s complex industrial environments; they do not provide a balanced viewpoint of maintenance system performance when treated in isolation. This paper presents a current challenge in the field of maintenance performance measurement (MPM) namely the problems associated with holistic measures using the nominal group technique (NGT). It outlines a measurement scheme that aids the evaluation of the maintenance function and proposes a template for developing a maintenance performance index given a set of measures. The template helps in minimising the shortcomings usually brought about by implicit redundancies and overemphasis of the component measures. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Daar is getuienis dat navorsing oor die effektiwiteit van instandhouding vooruitgaan. Bekende maatstawe soos produktiwiteit, rendement en effektiwiteit skiet tekort vir hedendaagse komplekse industri le omgewings omdat hulle in isolasie nie 'n gebalanseerde beeld van instandhoudingsvertoning gee nie. Hierdie navorsing behandel die meting van instandhoudingsvertoning op 'n holistiese wyse deur gebruik te maak van die nominale groeptegniek. Dit beskryf 'n meetstelsel vir die bepaling van 'n indeks vir instandhoudingsvertoning. Tekortkominge wat voortspruit as gevolg van implisiete oortolligheid en oorbeklemtoning van komponentwaardes word geminimiseer by wyse van vereenvoudiging.
THE OPTIMIZATION OF FLOW RATES OF AN EXTRUDER

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The article addresses how the flow rates of an extruder can be optimized. It mentions the plastic recycling industry as an example, which is only one of many solid waste recycling industries. The literature on flow rates is reviewed to demonstrate a gap that the current study aims to fills, in the hope that it will stimulate further research in a fertile area. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die artikel adresseer die vraagstuk van vloeitempo van ‘n ekstrusieproses. Dit handel met ‘n voorbeeld van ‘n plastiekherwinningsproses wat spruit uit soliede afvalverwerking. ‘n Literatuurstudie toon hoedat die navorsing verdere areas wat braak lê, aanspreek in die hoop dat verdere studie gestimuleer sal word.
AN INFLATION-BASED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULING MODEL

Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This paper attempts to extend an original Gantt-charting model for optimal maintenance scheduling of multiple facilities in multiple periods credited to Charles- Owaba. In particular, an inflationary factor is incorporated into the period-dependent cost function element of the model. Some computational experimentation on the new model is tested. This work is perhaps the first to advance the extension of the Optimal Gantt Charting (OGC) model in terms of inflation. The work presents a wealth of research opportunities and has at least the modest potential to evaluate maintenance scheduling theory into the ranks of major theories of maintenance. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die artikel poog om inflasie te akkommodeer binne die raamwerk van ‘n Ganttkaartmodel vir die bepaling van optimum skedulering van instandhouding vir meervoudige fasiliteite met die verloop van tyd. Inflasie vorm dus deel van die koste-element van die model. Die model is ook op ‘n beperkte wyse gevalideer met behulp van ‘n rekenaarstudie. Die verkre resultate toon dat addisionele navorsing gedoen kan word om sodoende die metode te vestig in die voorste rang van instandhoudingsbeplanning
UTILIZATION OF POULTRY, COW AND KITCHEN WASTES FOR BIOGAS PRODUCTION: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Abstract: The amount of solid wastes generated in developing countries such as Nigeria has steadily increased over the last two decades as a result of population explosion and continuous growth of industries and agricultural practices. In agriculture, particularly cattle rearing, large quantities of cow wastes are generated, which could be used as biogas inputs to compliment the fuel usage alternative. In addition, a large number of families generate heavy wastes in the kitchen on a daily basis, which could be converted to economic benefits. In this work, a comparative study of biogas production from poultry droppings, cattle dung, and kitchen wastes was conducted under the same operating conditions. 3kg of each waste was mixed with 9L of water and loaded into the three waste reactors. Biogas production was measured for a period of 40 days and at an average temperature of 30.5oC. Biogas production started on the 7th day, and attained maximum value on the 14th days for reactor 1. Production reached its peak on the 14th day with 85′10-3dm3 of gas produced in reactor 2. For reactor 3, biogas production started on the 8th day and production reached a peak value on the 14th day. The average biogas production from poultry droppings, cow dung and kitchen waste was 0.0318dm3/day, 0.0230dm3/day and 0.0143dm3/day, respectively. It is concluded that the wastes can be managed through conversion into biogas, which is a source of income generation for the society.
