The Apolipoprotein E Antagonistic Pleiotropy Hypothesis: Review and Recommendations

Abstract: Research on apolipoprotein E (APOE) has consistently revealed a relationship between the gene's ε4 allele and risk for development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, research with younger populations of ε4 carriers has suggested that the APOE ε4 allele may in fact be beneficial in earlier ages and may only confer risk of cognitive decline later in life. Accordingly, we and others have proposed that APOE may represent an example of antagonistic pleiotropy. Antagonistic pleiotropy is an evolutionary biology concept that proposes certain genes or alleles that may differentially impact fitness during different life stages. We critically review this hypothesis in light of new research of the impact of APOE on cognition and neural integrity across the lifespan. We provide recommendations for the revision of the antagonistic pleiotropy hypothesis of APOE and suggest important avenues for future research in this area.
Faster cognitive decline in the years prior to MR imaging is associated with smaller hippocampal volumes in cognitively healthy older persons

Abstract: Early identification of persons at risk for cognitive decline in aging is critical to optimizing treatment to delay or avoid a clinical diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). To accomplish early identification, it is essential that trajectories of cognitive change be characterized and associations with established biomarkers of MCI and AD be examined during the phase in which older persons are considered cognitively healthy. Here we examined the association of rate of cognitive decline in the years leading up to structural magnetic resonance imaging with an established biomarker, hippocampal volume. The sample comprised 211 participants of the Rush Memory and Aging Project who had an average of 5.5 years of cognitive data prior to structural scanning. Results showed that there was significant variability in the trajectories of cognitive change prior to imaging and that faster cognitive decline was associated with smaller hippocampal volumes. Domain-specific analyses suggested that this association was primarily driven by decline in working memory. The results emphasize the importance of closely examining cognitive change and its association with brain structure during the years in which older persons are considered cognitively healthy.
Citizen, Science, Highways, and Wildlife: Using a Web-based GIS to Engage Citizens in Collecting Wildlife Information

Abstract: Road Watch in the Pass is a citizen-science project that engages local citizens in reporting wildlife observations along a 44-km stretch of Highway 3 through Crowsnest Pass in southwestern Alberta, Canada. The numbers of wildlife vehicle collisions and a recent proposal to expand the highway have raised concerns from both human safety and wildlife conservation perspectives. Through the use of a web-based GIS, interested citizens can contribute information that will be instrumental in making final decisions concerning measures to mitigate the effects of highway expansion. Currently, 58 people have contributed over 713 observations to Road Watch. We performed a preliminary comparison of 11 months of Road Watch observations and wildlife mortality data for the same time period to demonstrate that the use of citizen science not only augments more conventional approaches, but also results in the emergence of new knowledge and insights. A Kappa index of agreement of 14% indicates poor agreement between the data sets, highlighting that wildlife successfully cross the highway in areas not identified by the wildlife mortality data. This has important implications for design and mitigation efforts for Highway 3 and other roadways.

Abstract: Measurement of the endpoints of X-ray spectra emitted from RF cavities is a useful non-invasive technique for measuring peak voltages within the cavities. The matching of calculated X-ray spectra to measured spectra is described, with emphasis upon the endpoint region.
FEM-BEM Coupling for the MHD Pipe Flow in an Exterior Region  [PDF]

Abstract:

In this study, the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow through a circular pipe under the influence of a transverse mag- netic field when the outside medium is also electrically conducting is solved numerically by using FEM-BEM coupling approach. The coupled partial differential equations defined for the interior medium are transformed into homogenous modified Helmholtz equations. For the exterior medium on an infinite region, the Laplace equation is considered for the exterior magnetic field. Unknowns in the equations are also related with the corresponding Dirichlet and Neumann type coupled boundary conditions. Unknown values of the magnetic field on the boundary and for the exterior region are obtained by using BEM, and the unknown velocity and magnetic field inside the pipe are obtained by using SUPG type stabilized FEM. Computations are carried for very high values of magnetic Reynolds numbers Rm1, Reynolds number Re and magnetic pressure Rh of the fluid. The results show that using stabilized method enables us to get stable and accurate numerical approximations consistent with the physical configuration of the problem over rough mesh which also results a cheap computational cost.

Real-Time Target Detection Architecture Based on Reduced Complexity Hyperspectral Processing

Abstract: This paper presents a real-time target detection architecture for hyperspectral image processing. The architecture is based on a reduced complexity algorithm for high-throughput applications.We propose an efficient pipelined processing element architecture and a scalable multiple-processing element architecture by exploiting data partitioning. We present a processing unit modeling based on the data reduction algorithm in hyperspectral image processing and propose computing structure, that is, to optimize memory usage and eliminates memory bottleneck. We investigate the interconnection topology for the multipleprocessing element architecture to improve the speed. The proposed architecture is designed and implemented in FPGA to illustrate the relationship between hardware complexity and execution throughput of hyperspectral image processing for target detection.

Abstract:
Objective: We sought to identify clinical discriminators between predominantly mood disordered and predominantly autism spectrum disordered research subjects that may reflect phenotypic state and treatment response characteristics. Method: Participants were 26 boys and 4 girls aged 2 to 18 years (Mean Age = 7.70). Subjects with DSM-IV diagnoses of Major depression (N = 2), Bipolar Disorder (N = 4) and Mood Disorder not otherwise specified (NOS) (N = 11) represented the mood disorder group (MD) (N = 17, Mean Age = 8.2) and those with diagnoses of Autistic Disorder (N = 1), Aspergers Disorder (7) or Pervasive Developmental Disorder (NOS) (N = 3) comprised the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) group (N = 9, Mean Age = 6.8). Primary outcome measurements were continuous actigraphic measurements collected over one to three week periods. Secondary outcomes included personality and observational measurements. Personality characteristics reflected significant cross-group impairments related to self-control and self-discipline and differed relative to intellectual measures. Observational measurements reflected greater general impairments among the ASD group. Abstract: Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water and sediment of Ekpan Creek of the Warri River were determined with GC Perkin-Elmer/Clarius 500. Compositional patterns of the PAHs were used to distinguish their sources in the aquatic system. The three diagnostic selected concentration ratios of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon isomer pairs confirmed that the PAHs concentrations in sediment of Ekpan Creek were from pyrogenic origin and include phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene and benzo(a)anthracene.
