Corrections to the Boltzmann mean free path in disordered systems with finite size scatterers
S. Correia
Mathematics , 2001, DOI: 10.1088/0305-4470/34/44/301
Abstract: The mean free path is an essential characteristic length in disordered systems. In microscopic calculations, it is usually approximated by the classical value of the elastic mean free path. It corresponds to the Boltzmann mean free path when only isotropic scattering is considered, but it is different for anisotropic scattering. In this paper, we work out the corrections to the so called Boltzmann mean free path due to multiple scattering effects on finite size scatterers, in the s-wave approximation, ie. when the elastic mean free path is equivalent to the Boltzmann mean free path. The main result is the expression for the mean free path expanded in powers of the perturbative parameter given by the scatterer density.

Abstract: The Junta Patriótica do Norte (JPN) was created a month after Germany’s declaration of war, stating that one of its purposes would be to follow the conflict. However, its efforts were extended and intensified in the postwar period, particularly with respect to assistance to war orphans, the organization of war commemorations, and last but not least, the dissemination and implementation of artistic tributes to the war’s fallen men. This article intends, besides the organic understanding of the institution, to first explore the Junta’s role in the conflict’s mobilization efforts and, second, its role in how the memory – material and immaterial – of World War I in Portugal has be shaped.
Correia,Luís de Miranda;
Análise Psicológica , 2004,
Abstract: the portuguese legislation on special education does not consider learning disabilities as a category of the special educational needs spectrum. as such, students with learning disabilities are not entitled to receive specialized services needed to answer to their special needs. this article attempts to demonstrate that learning disabilities is a category of the special educational needs spectrum; therefore, the students with learning disabilities should receive special educational services when recommended in their individualized educational programs (iep).

Abstract: we know today that there is a group of children whose neurological disorders interfere with their way of processing information that, in many instances, will require the services and support of special education. these kinds of disorders usually affect the student's ability to read, write or do math calculations, or even affect the acquisition of social skills; the students who present them are generally called students with specific learning disabilities (sld). however, in portugal this seems not to be the case. by not considering sld an area of disability that qualifies for special services, the ministry of education is limiting the access of students who present them to sound educational programs, thus preventing them from learning effectively in accordance to their characteristics and needs. with this in mind, this article attempts to conceptualize a portuguese definition of sld that could lead to an understanding of such a misguided issue and, thus, contribute to the elaboration of effective educational responses for students who present sld.
Cellular Automata under the influence of noise

International Journal of Interactive Multimedia and Artificial Intelligence , 2012,
Abstract: We present DEVELOP-FPS, a software tool specially designed for the development of First Person Shooter (FPS) players controlled by Rule Based Scripts. DEVELOP-FPS may be used by FPS developers to create, debug, maintain and compare rule base player behaviours, providing a set of useful functionalities: i) for an easy preparation of the right scenarios for game debugging and testing; ii) for controlling the game execution: users can stop and resume the game execution at any instant, monitoring and controlling every player in the game, monitoring the state of each player, their rule base activation, being able to issue commands to control their behaviour; and iii) to automatically run a certain number of game executions and collect data in order to evaluate and compare the players performance along a sufficient number of similar experiments.
Abstract: This article aims to sketch a diachronic analysis of a centenary process that must not be reduced to its micro-computerized version: the e-learning. If its historical process was started by the emissions supported by radio-broadcasters, was reinforced during World War II due to the use of educational films applied to the Army training and was affirmed by the mass use of multimedia micro-computers connected to telematic networks in the late twentieth century, then it is relevant to know the evolution of the theoretical, technological and pedagogical means used in the e-learning process. This historical approach intends also to understand the role played by the the nature, mission and methods of the distance education and educational technology in the shaping process of the e-learning’s educational rationale.

Transportes , 2009,
Gestational carriers: A viable alternative for women with medical contraindications to pregnancy  [PDF]

Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OJOG) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojog.2013.35A2005
Abstract:

Objective: Compare the efficacy of surrogate or gestational carrier (GC) cycles to that of autologous in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injections (ICSI) in patients with gynecologic or medical co-morbidities contraindicative to pregnancy. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: Infertility patients from a single university hospital-based program from 1998-2009. Intervention(s): 128 GC cycles from 80 intended parents were identified and compared with 15,311 IVF or ICSI cycles. Main Outcome Measure(s): The peak estradiol (E2), number of oocytes retrieved, cycle cancellation, ongoing pregnancy, and live-birth were compared between GCs and autologous IVF carriers. Indications for GC use were also identified. Multiple cycles contributed by the same patient were accounted for using multivariable generalized estimating equations and two-sided Wald p-values. Results: Uterine factors (67%) was the most common indication for using a GC, followed by non-gynecologic medical conditions including coagulopathies (13%), end stage renal disease (10%), cardiovascular disease (5%) and cancer (5%). Adjusting for age, ovulation induction in GC cycles had similar peak E2 levels and number of oocytes retrieved relative to IVF cycles (p = 0.23 and 0.43, respectively). Clinical pregnancy (49% vs. 42%, p = 0.28) and live-birth rates (31% vs. 32%, p = 0.74) were also comparable. A sub-analysis of GC cycles in those women with uterine factor indications, demonstrated significantly higher clinical pregnancy rates (OR = 2.0; CI = 1.2 - 3.5) with 60% greater odds of live-birth relative to IVF/ICSI cycles, however this odds was not statistically significant for differences in live-birth (CI = 0.9 - 2.9). Conclusions: GCs are a viable alternative to start families for patients with medical co-morbidities precluding pregnancy.
