A probabilistic seismic hazard map of India and adjoining regions

Abstract: This paper presents the results of an exercise carried out under GSHAP, over India and adjoining regions bound by 0°N-40°N and 65°E-100°E. A working catalogue of main shocks was prepared by merging the local catalogues with the NOAA catalogue, and removing duplicates, aftershocks and earthquakes without any magnitude. Eighty six potential seismic source zones were delineated based on the major tectonic features and seismicity trends. Using the probabilistic hazard assessment approach of McGuire, adopted by GSHAP, the Peak Ground Accelerations (PGA) were computed for 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years, at locations defined by a grid of 0.5° x 0.5°. Since no reliable estimates of attenuation values are available for the Indian region, the attenuation relation of Joyner and Boore (1981) was used. The PGA values over the grid points were contoured to obtain a seismic hazard map. The hazard map depicts that a majority of the Northern Indian plate boundary region and the Tibetan plateau region have hazard level of the order of 0.25 g with prominent highs of the order of 0.35-0.4 g in the seismically more active zones like the Burmese arc, Northeastern India and Hindukush region. In the Indian shield, the regional seismic hazard, covering a major area, is of the order of 0.05-0.1 g whereas some areas like Koyna depict hazard to the level of 0.2 g. The present map can be converted into a conventional seismic zoning map having four zones with zone factors of 0.1 g, 0.2 g, 0.3 g and 0.4 g respectively.

Abstract: A case of posterior corneal abscess with extension into the anterior chamber, in the presence of an intact corneal epithelium and clear anterior corneal stroma, occurring in a young patient is described. The patient responded to treatment with systemic and topical acyclovir. The diagnosis of presumed herpes simplex keratitis was made. We report this unusual presentation of ocular herpes manifesting as a posterior corneal and anterior chamber abscess. Abstract: Glass sample of Zinc Lithium Bismuth Borate (25-x) Bi2O3:20Li2O:20ZnO:35B2O3:xPr6O11, (where x = 1, 1.5 and 2 mol%) has been prepared by melt-quenching technique. The amorphous nature of the prepared glass samples was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The absorption spectra of three Pr3+ doped zinc lithium bismuth borate glasses have been recorded at room temperature. The observed optical spectra are discussed in terms of energy states and the intensity of the transitions. The various interaction parameters like Slater-Condon, Lande, bonding and Racah parameters have been computed. Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and laser parameters have also been calculated. The stimulated emission cross section (σp) for the transition (3P03F2) is found to be in the range 3.12 - 10.43 * 10-20 cm2. The σp values are comparatively large suggesting the possible utilization of these materials in laser applications.

Abstract: Despite Au, Al and Cu being individually very well-known elements, their ternary phase diagram has not been studied in as much detail as those of many other Au-containing ternaries. Here we review what is known, and consider the prospects for technological exploitation of some of the ternary compositions. The components of greatest interest in Al-Au-Cu may be the β-phases, at least two of which have shape memory properties. Of these, ‘Spangold’, which has the nominal stoichiometry Au7Cu5Al4, has received some attention for jewellery applications, while the edge compound Cu3Al is a well-known shape memory composition with corresponding specialised industrial uses. The properties of other β-phase compositions in the system have been scarcely investigated. The system also contains an extensive γ-phase, Al4AuxCu9 x, where x ranges from 0 to ~6.5, and the purple gold phase AuAl2.

Abstract: In this work the fabrication and characterization of a novel zinc oxide thin film piezoelectric micocantilever with wet etching method have been reported for the first time ever. The piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film was deposited using dielectric (RF magnetron) sputtering method. The crystalline structures, surface roughness (morphology) and charge reversal of ZnO film are evaluated by X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The deposited ZnO film has a preferred ZnO (002) orientation and the c-axis is perpendicular to the substrate surface. The grain size in the ZnO thin film is found to be the order of 40-50 nm and has a columnar structure. This novel ZnO thin film microcantilever is fabricated by micromachining technique and by wet etching of Si (TMAH) to release the cantilever. The functioning of the released device has been tested by the Laser Doppler Vibrometer (Ploytec MSA-500) by varying applied voltage. The transverse piezoelectric coefficients d31 of the ZnO film, measured from the deflection of the cantilever with influence of applied voltage were calculated as 2.87 pC/N. The observed dynamic characterization of the novel piezoelectric microcantilever shows linear response with the applied driving voltage. These microcantilevers may be used to fabricate the smart slider with inbuilt sensor/actuator and also may enable to fabricate energy scavengers to replace traditional batteries (for wireless sensors network) with low resonant frequency and high power output.

Abstract: Information available on the web is huge & it covers diversified fields. Nowadays most of search engines use essentially keyword based search techniques. We simply specify a set of keywords or query as a request and a reference we get a list of pages, ranked based on similarity of query. Currently searching web face with one problem that many times outcome is not satisfactory because of irrelevance of the information. Searching the exact information from such a huge repository of unstructured web data is still main area of research interest. One solution to achieve this is Semantic Web. Ontology is an effective concept commonly used for the Semantic Web. Ontology is “an explicit specification of a conceptualization”. There are two main pillars of semantic Web one is Problem Solving Methods & another is Ontology. Ontology building is a tedious job and a time consuming task for user. The quality of ontology plays an important role in information retrieval application .This paper deals with features & familiarity with different Ontology building & learning tools. After all the preliminary knowledge about all tools & software we have made research about specific features & services provided by some tools & identified the optimum tool in all respect for particularly for our further research project.

Abstract: The regional hazard mapping for the whole Eastern Asia was coordinated by the SSB Regional Centre in Beijing, originating from the expansion of the test area initially established in the border region of China-India-Nepal-Myanmar- Bangla Dash, in coordination with the other Regional Centres (JIPE, Moscow, and AGSO, Canberra) and with the direct assistance of the USGS. All Eastern Asian countries have participated directly in this regional effort, with the addition of Japan, for which an existing national hazard map was incorporated. The regional hazard depicts the expected peak ground acceleration with 10% exceedance probability in 50 years.
