PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0040189
Abstract: Milk processing lines offer a wide variety of microenvironments where a diversity of microorganisms can proliferate. We sampled crevices and junctions where, due to deficient reach by typical sanitizing procedures, bacteria can survive and establish biofilms. The sampling sites were the holding cell, cold storage tank, pasteurizer and storage tank - transfer pump junction. The culturable bacteria that were isolated after the sanitation procedure were predominantly Pseudomonas spp., Serratia spp, Staphylococcus sciuri and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. We assayed several phenotypic characteristics such as the ability to secrete enzymes and siderophores, as well as the capacity of the strains to form biofilms that might contribute to their survival in a mixed species environment. The Pseudomonas spp. isolates were found to either produce proteases or lecithinases at high levels. Interestingly, protease production showed an inverse correlation with siderophore production. Furthermore, all of the Serratia spp. isolates were strong biofilm formers and spoilage enzymes producers. The organisms identified were not mere contaminants, but also producers of proteins with the potential to lower the quality and shelf-life of milk. In addition, we found that a considerable number of the Serratia and Pseudomonas spp. isolated from the pasteurizer were capable of secreting compounds with antimicrobial properties.

Abstract: a literature review was conducted on the effectiveness of measures to prevent dental caries. articles published in scientific journals from 1980 to 1998 and indexed in medline were selected. some 210 articles were found and their abstracts classified according to intervention strategies, type of research design, and observed effects. the most frequent preventive measures were the use of fluoride toothpaste (20.5%), fluoride mouthwash (17.2%), and occlusal sealants (18,1%). the main target population was schoolchildren 6-12 years old (53.8%) and teenagers (15.7%). western europe produced 58.7% of the articles on this subject, followed by united states (22.7%), eastern europe, asia, canada, and latin america. no relationship was identified between program results (effective as opposed to ineffective studies) and the type of preventive practice and research design, indicating that other issues need to be investigated, such as the context of organizational implementation (where, how, and by whom prevention is implemented). education in oral hygiene as a basic tool and key component in specific preventive action has received little research attention.

Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232007000600031
Abstract: this paper examines the working facilities and processes of dentists in the primary healthcare systems of two towns in bahia state, brazil, striving to analyze the extent to which factors related to dental care, training, placement and professional profiles influence their practices. semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine dentists in both towns, with work process organization patterns in municipality c being closer to the structuring principles of brazil's national health system than in municipality e. this seems to be related to management characteristics, with networking links among individual, collective, and preventive clinical activities and planning noted in municipality c. despite these differences, the practitioners presented similarities in terms of dual militancy and perceptions of the public and private healthcare fields. the hegemony of the private sector seems to be influencing the professional practices of dentists in the public health system.
Chaves,Snia Cristina Lima; Vieira-da-Silva,Lígia Maria;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102002000600009
Abstract: objective: to carry out a meta-analysis on the effectiveness of fluoride toothpaste for reducing dental caries to calculate the effect size of different hypothesis. methods: medline and lilacs databases were studied in the period from 1980 to 1998. to evaluate the quality of the studies, methodological rigor criteria proposed by kay & locker (1996) were applied after the criteria were submitted to an expert committee of cnpq (national scientific council of brazil) senior researchers. of 43 papers selected, 22 met the proposed criteria. the effect size of intervention was calculated from differences among the groups and the overall effect of five groups of hypothesis. results: the high concentration of fluoride in the toothpaste is associated with a larger effect (overall effect = -0.17 ci 95% -0.22/-0.12). the largest caries reductions were observed when comparing fluoride toothpastes and no fluoride toothpastes (overall effect = -0.29 ic 95% -0.34/-0.24). the addiction of antimicrobial agents (overall effect = -0.03 ic 95% -0.07/+0.02), differences in abrasive systems (overall effect = -0.02 ic 95% -0.09/+0.04) and active components do not increase the effectiveness of fluoride toothpastes (overall effect = -0.04 ic 95% -0.10/+0.01). conclusions: the highest caries reductions were seen in studies where there was supervised tooth brushing. this review reinforced the importance of tooth brushing with fluoride toothpastes for controlling dental caries. however it showed the emphasis put on medical approaches for disease control rather than specific educational actions. the heterogeneity of the results shows the need to consider issues such as the scenario for implementing preventive methods in the evaluation process.

Chaves Snia Cristina Lima,Vieira-da-Silva Lígia Maria
Chaves Snia Cristina Lima,Vieira-da-Silva Lígia Maria

Abstract: this study investigated the association of il-1a (+4845) and il-1b (+3954) gene polymorphism with the subgingival microbiota and periodontal status of hiv-infected brazilian individuals on highly active antiretroviral therapy (haart). one hundred and five subjects were included in the study, distributed into 2 hiv groups [29 chronic periodontitis (cp+) and 30 periodontally healthy (h+)]; and 2 non-hiv groups (29 cp- and 17 h- patients). il-1a and b were genotyped by pcr and restriction enzyme digestion. thirty-three bacterial species were detected by checkerboard. overall, we observed a prevalence of the allele 2 in the il1-a and il-1b polymorphism at 30.5% and 25.7%, respectively. only 11.4% of all patients were composite genotype-positive, and 75% of those were hiv-infected. no significant associations between polymorphism of the il-1 gene and periodontitis or hiv infection were observed. likewise, no significant differences in the frequency and counts of any bacterial species were found between individuals with and without allele 2 (il-1a or il-1b). the data indicated that the il-1 gene polymorphism is neither associated with periodontal destruction nor with high levels of subgingival species, including putative periodontal pathogens in hiv brazilian individuals on haart.
