This work aimed to research the aquatic insect community structure using this community as a bioindicator of the environmental quality in a stretch of the Correntoso river, in Pantanal do Negro, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Six collections were taken in different seasonal periods; ebb, dry and wet. The organisms were collected using a 300 Ym mesh D net sweeping five times through the roots of macrophyte banks at each sample. Three environments were compared (open, intermediary, closed) by adding the information from six collection sites. Family richness, absolute and relative abundance ofinsect samples and an evaluation of water quality were analyzed by using the BMWP index, BMWP-ASPT index, IBF index and Shannon diversity index, with log2. A total of 60 families from 12 orders of Insecta Class were recorded, totaling 19,773 individuals. Among the indexes applied, the BMWP index was the one that best represented the conditions of the studied environment.

This work aimed ato research the distribution of insects associated with aquatic macrophytes and the similarity among collection sites during the reflux period in a stretch of Correntoso river, Pantanal do Negro, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. The collection sites were determined by changes in the riparian formation structure, characterized as open when there is communication with flooded fields and intermediary and closed when there is not any communication withflooded fields. Three collections were taken at six sample sites, during reflux periods. The organisms were collected using a D net, 300 mm mesh, with samples from five nets thrown in roots of aquatic macrophytes. Family richness, absolute and relative abundance of the insects found, and similarity of collection sites were analyzed using Euclidian distance and complete connection, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, with log2. Sixty-four families from 10 orders of Hexapoda class were registered, totaling 2,525 individuals – 2,405 of them aquatic and semiaquatic, and 120 terrestrial. The collect sites did not present a fixed model of similarity, and the formation of groups occurred in distinct forms at each collection.

Abstract: introduction: this study describes the epidemiological aspects of tb among brazilian native indians aged less than 15 years-old in mato grosso do sul, brazil, between 2000 and 2006. methods: a retrospective observational study based on secondary data collected from the health system of brazilian indigenous peoples, special indigenous sanitary district (dsei), and national system of notifiable diseases (sinan) databases. the variables analyzed were: frequency of tb according to sex, age, clinical presentation and outcome. the fisher test and the incidence tendency curve were calculated (p<0.01). results: tb prevalence was 20.4% (224/1,096). the incidence rate decreased 14% per year during the study period. tb was more prevalent among brazilian indigenous individuals aged less than 5 years-old and among those aged less than one year-old. more than half of tb cases were male and the most common clinical presentation was pulmonary tb (92.9%). cure was the most common outcome (91.1%), followed by abandoned treatment (3.6%) and death (2.2%). conclusions: the high cure rate, reduced mortality and the progressive decrease in tb incidence rate during the study period indicate the effectiveness of supervised treatment of the new tb control model implemented among brazilian indigenous peoples on 2000.
F-thresholds and Generalized test ideals of determinantal ideals of maximal minors

Abstract: We study higher jumping numbers and generalized test ideals associated to determinantal ideals over a field of positive characteristic. We work in positive characteristic and give a complete characterization of both families for ideals generated by maximal minors; and make a conjecture for the general case. Although these invariants are understood asymptotically - as their positive characteristic grows to infinity they essentially coincide with their characteristic zero analogues - there are known examples where the behavior in positive characteristic differs significantly from that of characteristic zero. This new knowledge associated to determinantal ideals strengthens the case that test ideals and multiplier exhibit essentially the same description even in small characteristics. We conjecture that a similar result holds for determinantal ideals of arbitrary size.
Stellar Populations, Bars and Secular Evolution in Late-Type Galaxies

Physics , 2000,
Abstract: We have done a robust statistical analysis of UBV color profiles of 257 Sbc barred and unbarred galaxies. We found that there is an excess of barred galaxies among the objects with null or positive (bluish inward) color gradients, which seems to indicate that bars act as a mechanism of homogenization of the stellar population along galaxies. Moreover, the relationship found between total and bulge colors shows that, in the process of homogenization, the stellar population of bulges are getting bluer, whereas the total color of galaxies remains the same. These characteristics are expected in a secular evolutionary scenario, and seem incompatible with both the monolithic and the hierarchical scenarios for spiral galaxy formation.

Abstract: This work evaluated the effect of dissolved oxygen and the initial inoculum concentration on xylose reductase (XR) production by Candida guilliermondii from sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate. Both the parameters were studied under an experimental design 22 with triplicate at central point. The statistical analysis of the results indicated a significant negative effect on XR production from the variable inoculum. The variable dissolved oxygen also showed a negative effect on XR production. We found the maximum enzyme activity (2.5 U?mg?1) when both the factors were applied at their lowest levels. The yeast showed to be potentially capable for xylose reductase production when sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate was used as carbon source. Also, the results presented important information for further optimization of xylose reductase attainment.

Abstract: this paper presents preliminary analysis of the nutritional status assessment (ns) and morbidity of low-income children under 5 years of age seen by the food and nutritional surveillance system of a primary health care unit in rio de janeiro between 1987 and 1991. the distribution of lengh/stature for age (lsa) was skewed to the left as early as the first semester of life. approximately 20% of the children had values of body mass for age (bma) below the 10th percentile of the reference growth curve (nchs). the prevalence of stunting (z lsa < - 2) decreased yearly during the period. the eight most frequent causes of visit to the unit were the same but the frequencies varied from year to year. in the last three years upper respiratory (urd) and digestive diseases (dd) and undernutrition prevailed. ns did not correlate with upd but the prevalence of dd was inversely associated with bma percentile. these data indicate relevant growth deficits in the children which justifies the implementation of nutritional surveillance in health units. it is also clear that morbidity and ns must be correlated in future studies, so that, the role of nutritional surveillance is enhanced in the health sector.

Abstract: this work presents the experimental results of a study which intended to develop a composite with cementations matrix reinforced with bamboo pulp. two types of pulps were used: refined and unrefined pulps. the fibre content varied between 0 and 16% cement (weight basis). after the preparation of fresh composite mix the experimental specimens were prepared applying a specially developed process based on hastshek method using suction then moulding and pressing. the compression, tension and the flexural behavior and their constitutive relations were established using 5 cm diameter by 10 cm high cylindrical specimens and three point bending tests at respectively. the energy absorbing capacity of the new composites was also established. physical properties such as water absorption, apparent porosity, dry and humid density were also obtained. the results showed a better performance of composites with refined fibres when compared to those with unrefined ones. it was observed that the optimum fibre content was approximately 8% of refined fibre which improved the mechanical properties of the composites.
