Abstract: objective: to describe smoking habits and to identify their determinants in adolescent students. methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out on smoking habits comprising 1,052 girls and 984 boys aged 13 years attending public and private schools in the city of porto, portugal. the proportion of participation was 77.5%. information on sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics was obtained from a questionnaire filled out at home by participants and their parents. at school, another self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain information about tobacco use. several independent samples were compared using the kruskal-wallis test and proportions were compared by chi-square test. odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals were calculated by unconditional logistic regression. results: overall, 19.9% (22.4% of girls and 17.1% of boys) students only had ever experimented smoking but were not smokers; 1.8% (2.0% of girls and 1.5% of boys) were occasional smokers and 1.3% (2.0% of girls and 0.4% of boys) smoked at least one cigarette/day. curiosity was the main reason given by adolescents to experiment smoking (48.4% of girls and 45.6% of boys). after adjustment to parental, siblings' and friends' smoking habits, the stronger association was with the smoking habits of their friends for both girls (or=4.03; 95% ci: 2.69-6.04) and boys (or=5.39; 95% ci: 3.34-8.70). conclusions: a high proportion of students had ever experimented smoking. smoking habits among peers proved to be the strongest determinant of smoking during adolescence.

Abstract: Background Adolescence is a critical stage for bone accrual. It is also decisive for the establishment of behaviors such as smoking and alcohol drinking. Objective To quantify the short- and long-term associations between smoking and drinking initiation and bone mineral density in adolescent girls. Methods We used prospective data from 731 girls identified in public and private schools in Porto, Portugal. Evaluations were conducted when participants were 13 and 17 years old. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at the forearm by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and weight, height and fat-free mass were measured. Pubertal development status was estimated using menarche age. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data on smoking and alcohol drinking, physical exercise and calcium and vitamin D intakes. BMD in early and late adolescence was analyzed as a continuous or dichotomous (Z-score cutoff: ?1.0) variable. Associations were calculated using linear or logistic regression. Results Over one quarter of these girls had tried smoking by 13, while 59% had drunk alcoholic beverages and 20% had experienced both behaviors by that age. Lower mean BMD at 17 years of age was observed in girls who had ever smoked by 13, as well as in those who reported drinking at that age. There were no significant cross-sectional associations between experience and frequency of smoking or drinking and BMD at 13 years of age. However, we observed significant associations between BMD z-score<?1 in late adolescence and having ever smoked by 13, after adjustment for menarche age and sports practice, (OR = 1.92; 95% CI: 1.21, 3.05) and with ever smoking and drinking in the same period (OR = 2.33; 95% CI: 1.36, 4.00). Conclusion Our study adds prospective evidence to the role of early initiation of smoking and alcohol drinking as relevant markers of lower bone mineral density in late adolescence.

Abstract: this paper presents a rating scale designed to capture the quality of maternal interaction behaviors. although this instrument was used in the context of a broader research project, which intended to study maternal determinants of child’s engagement quality, this article will specifically focus methodological decisions concerning the observation of mothers’ interaction behaviours. the teaching styles rating scale (tsrs) was used to observe interaction behaviours of 120 mothers of toddlers in a free play situation followed by a cleanup instruction. each dyad was observed in three different times. the examination of underlying dimensions, internal consistency, inter-rater agreement coefficients and temporal consistency data allow us to conclude that tsrs is a useful and adequate measure of portuguese mothers interaction behaviors in dyadic play situations.

Revista Brasileira de Ciências Farmacêuticas , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-93322004000300013
Abstract: the oral dosages formulations from pothomorphe umbellata (piperaceae) can only be therapeutically evaluated after establishing 4-nerolidylcatechol (4-nrc) pharmacokinetic profile in plasma. for that purpose, a unique analytical method validation using hplc-uv detection was developed for analysis of rat plasma samples. the animals received 10 mg/kg b.w. of 4-nrc i.v.. analytical conditions were set with c18 column, methanol: acetonitrile: water (62:20:18) as mobile phase, and a flow rate of 1.6 ml/min. the assay was linear from 1.0 - 80.0 mcg/ml. the recovery procedure was performed by liquid-liquid extraction showing quantitative extraction (106.4±8.7%). limit of quantification (loq) was found to be 1.0 mcg/ml. interassay precision and accuracy ranged from values of 14.4-3.0% and 24.0-0.2%, respectively. recovery after liquid-liquid extraction was found to be 106.5 ± 3%. the method is simple and reliable with total run time of less than 15 min.

Biotemas , 2009,
Abstract: The present study aimed to take stock of the species of anurans in three localities of the urban region of Altamira, a municipal district in the west of the state of Pará (Oriental Amazonia). Collections were made between January and June of 2004. Fifteen species were recorded during the study. The family Hylidae was the most represented, with eight species. The data was compatible with the degree of conservation of the collection areas. The necessity of making new fauna inventories in all Brazilian biomes is of extreme urgency, particularly in the Amazon, given its vast extension and lack of inventories.
