Formoterol May Activate Rat Muscle Regeneration During Cancer Cachexia

Abstract: PURPOSE: The development of cancer cachexia is the most common manifestation of advanced malignant disease. METHOD: The effects on muscle regeneration of 2-adrenoceptor agonist formoterol (0.3 mg/kg) were tested in cachectic tumour-bearing rats (Yoshida AH-130 ascites hepatoma). RESULTS: Administration of formoterol results in a significant increase in the mass and protein content of tibialis muscle in tumour-bearing-rats. This increase is associated with a decreased myogenin mRNA content together with an increased Pax-7 gene expression. Bupivacaine treatment by local injection results in an important reduction in tibialis weight together with significant increases in Pax-7, myogenin and MyoD gene expression. Formoterol treatment in bupivacaine-treated rats results in significant increases in Pax-7 together with significant decreases in myogenin mRNA content, suggesting that this 2-agonist is favouring muscle regeneration by stimulating the proliferation of satellite cells.Altogether, the data reinforce the potential role of formoterol in the treatment of muscle wasting diseases.
Theophylline is able to partially revert cachexia in tumour-bearing rats

Abstract: Background and aims The aim of the present investigation was to examine the anti-wasting effects of theophylline (a methylxantine present in tea leaves) on a rat model of cancer cachexia. Methods The in vitro effects of the nutraceuticals on proteolysis were examined on muscle cell cultures submitted to hyperthermia. Individual muscle weights, muscle gene expression, body composition and cardiac function were measured in rats bearing the Yoshida AH-130 ascites hepatoma, following theophylline treatment. Results Theophylline treatment inhibited proteolysis in C2C12 cell line and resulted in an anti-proteolytic effect on muscle tissue (soleus and heart), which was associated with a decrease in circulating TNF-alpha levels and with a decreased proteolytic systems gene expression. Treatment with the nutraceutical also resulted in an improvement in body composition and cardiac function. Conclusion Theophylline - alone or in combination with drugs - may be a candidate molecule for the treatment of cancer cachexia.

The prominent clinical feature of cachexia is weight loss. Cachexia occurs in the majority of cancer patients before death and it is responsible for the deaths of 22% of cancer patients. Although bodyweight is the most important endpoint of any cachexia treatment, body composition, physical performance and quality of life should be monitored. From the results presented here, one can speculate that a single therapy may not be completely successful in the treatment of cachexia. From this point of view, treatments involving different combinations are more likely to be successful. The objectives of any therapeutic combination are two-fold: an anticatabolic aim directed towards both fat and muscle catabolism and an anabolic objective leading to the synthesis of macromolecules such as contractile proteins.

Abstract:

I present the result of a two-year research project developed at the “Instituto de Estudos de Linguagem” (IEL/Unicamp, Brazil) and also of action research I have been organizing since 2006 when I started to work as a professor at the “Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos”, in Brazil. Relying on recent developments in New Literacy Studies, I explore the concept of the continuum illiterate-literate and argue that it implies elements of transformation, as well as conservation. I also argue that three intersecting continua must be considered together: the continua oral-written, rural-urban and restricted-full literacy, always taking into consideration ethnicity as a variable (Cohen, 1974). Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Brazil, I show how elements of restricted literacy (Goody, 1968) are presented on the threshold of the twenty first century; how they entertain relation with the rural to urban migration and with a marked contrast between different ethnicities; and in what sense this fact may be visible in the everyday use of language and in the style inherent in it.

Nheengatu Language and Its Role in the Tactics of Construction of Indigenous Identity  [PDF]

Abstract: Nheengatu is one of the co-official languages of São Gabriel da Cachoeira in the Amazon region (AM/Brazil). About 8000 people in the Upper Rio Negro region speak it, and there exists a contemporary movement for its revitalization in the state of Pará (PA/Brazil). Based upon field research in both these regions, this paper bears reflections on the inter-relations existing between language and identity including references in the areas of Applied Linguistics, Culture Semiotics and Anthropology. I propose a discussion on Nheengatu language, which is often considered in a dysphoric way, i.e., as if it had been imposed on the natives, resulting only from the colonizers’ strategies. I propose we can instead envisage it from the perspective concerning the tactics constructed by the aboriginals in order to preserve and reconquer their identity, i.e., from the point of view of a Poetics of Relation within a complex, contradictory and hybrid linguistic approach.

Abstract: L’article analitza la implantació i el desenvolupament de l’ educació escolar a les primeres dècades del segle XIX a Catalunya, concretament des de l’arribada de les tropes napoleòniques el 1808 fins a la consolidació de la reforma liberal de 1845. S’hi realitza una anàlisi cronològica dels esdeveniments polítics, legals i culturals més importants, i s’aprofundeix en el pensament escolar d’aquesta dilatada època, que l’ autor esmicola en diverses etapes històriques: primer període absolutista (1814-1820), el Trienni Liberal (1820-1823) i el segon període absolutista (1823-1833), bo i tancant amb el triumf del liberalisme (1833-1845). L’article queda completat amb un estudi prou detallat dels diferents nivells educatius (primari, secundari, universitari), tot parant atenció a la situació de l’educació de les dones. En darrer terme, s’inclou un seguit de taules estadístiques amb dades escolars d’aquesta època. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dans cet article, l’auteur analyse l’implantation ainsi que le développement de l’éducation scolaire dans les premières décennies du XIXe siècle en Catalogne, concrètement depuis l’arrivée des troupes napoléoniennes en 1808 jusqu’à la consolidation de la réforme libérale de 1845. Il procède à une analyse chronologique des événements politiques, légaux et culturels les plus importants, pour approfondir ensuite dans la pensée scolaire de cette vaste époque que l’auteur détaille en diverses étapes historiques : première période absolutiste (1814-1820), le trienio (trois années) libéral (1820-1823) et la deuxième période absolutiste (1823-1833), tout cela se terminant par le triomphe du libéralisme (1833-1845). Ensuite, il complète l’article par une étude détaillée des différents niveaux éducatifs (primaire, secondaire, universitaire), en prêtant aussi attention à la situation de l’éducation de la femme. Enfin, l’auteur inclut un ensemble de tableaux statistiques relatifs aux données scolaires de l’époque traitée. Abstract: the following article, as a result of our phd thesis, intends to present the conceptual basis of vigotsky's cultural-historical approach for the comprehension of language, proper to the human species. to understand the individual as a social and cultural being in a developmental history, that goes from interpersonal to intrapersonal, and language being the mediator of all his/her relations. likewise, to highlight the contributions of this approach for the education of people with special needs. to stress that this person is a social individual that develops through social, cultural and historical relations by the mediation of another individual and the existing signs in this mediation, the language being the main sign. we can conclude that, from the cultural-historical approach, a leap is expected in the development of the individual with special needs in the personal relations context, in the teacher's enabling and engaging attitudes and the mediating action of signs.
