Some Data on the Terrestrial Isopods (Isopoda, Oniscidea) from a Wet Meadow near an Artificial Canal in North-Western Romania

Abstract: We studied the terrestrial isopod fauna in a wet grassy area near an artificial canal in the northern part of the Western Plain, Romania, between April and September 2009. We identified five terrestrial isopod species: Hyloniscus riparius, Trachelipus arcuatus, T. rathkii, T. nodulosus and Armadillidium vulgare. The dominant species were T. rathkii, A. vulgare and T. nodulosus. Despite of the unforested character of the habitat, a sylvan species, T. arcuatus, was also present. This species could probably survive in the wet areas surrounding the canal following deforestation. The highest abundance was observed during the summer months, corresponding to the main activity period of females with marsupium.
Comparison of Terrestrial Isopod (Isopoda, Oniscidea) Assemblages from Two Types of Forests from North Western Romania

Abstract: In 2008 we compared the terrestrial isopod assemblages from two different habitats, a beech forest and a mixed beech and spruce forest, from north western Romania (Huta Certeze locality). The samples were taken from April to September using pitfall traps. We identified a total of 7 species: Ligidium germanicum, Trichoniscus sp., Hyloniscus transsilvanicus, Protracheoniscus politus, Porcellium collicola, Trachelipus difficilis and Porcellio scaber. A greater diversity and species richness were noticed in the beech forest. The poverty of species in the mixed forest was a consequence of the forest type, the anthropogenic impact and the dry environment. High surface activity of individuals was noticed in the summer months. Even if the species compositions of the two compared isopod assemblages were not identical, there weren’t statistically significant differences between them.
Comparative Data on the Trophic Spectrum of Syntopic Bombina variegata and Rana temporaria (Amphibia: Anura) Populations from the Iezer Mountains, Romania

Abstract: In August 2009, we compared the trophic spectrum of syntopic Bombina variegata and Rana temporaria populations from the Bratia Valley in the Iezer Mountains. The separation of the trophic niche observed between the juveniles and the adults of R. temporaria is caused by the differences in size between them, differences that influence their jump. The main consumed prey taxa by Rana temporaria is represented by Arahnida, Gastropoda and Hymenoptera. Furthermore, the differences between the sizes of their mouths separate the trophic niche between the two species. Our results indicate a trophic selectiveness for B. variegata, which prefers ants. Despite the fact that the two species share the same habitat, the ants were consumed mostly by B. variegata. This is probably a consequence of the fact that B. variegata is a poisonous species, the toxins being able to originate from their preys – as are ants as well. The lack of competition for the two species indicates a rich trophic offer, enough to satisfy the energy needs of both species in contact in a limited space.
Ecological and zoogeographical significance of terrestrial isopods from the Carei Plain natural reserve (Romania)

Abstract: In the Carei Plain natural reserve we identified 15 terrestrial isopod species: Haplophthalmus mengii, Haplophthalmus danicus, Hyloniscus riparius, Hyloniscus transsylvanicus, Plathyarthrus hoffmannseggii, Cylisticus convexus, Porcellionides pruinosus, Protracheoniscus politus, Trachelipus arcuatus, Trachelipus nodulosus, Trachelipus rathkii, Porcellium collicola, Porcellio scaber, Armadillidium vulgare and Armadillidium versicolor. The highest species diversity is found in wetlands, while the lowest is in plantations and forests. On the Carei Plain, there are some terrestrial isopods that are normally connected with higher altitudes. Moreover, some sylvan species are present in the open wetlands. Unlike marshes, sand dunes present anthropophilic and invasive species. The diversity of the terrestrial isopods from the Carei Plain protected area is high due to the habitats’ diversity and the history of this area. Thus, the composition of the terrestrial isopod communities from the area underlines its distinct particularities, emphasizing the necessity of preserving the natural habitats.
Eryx jaculus (Reptilia, Boidae) north of Danube: a road-killed specimen from Romania

Abstract: In September 2011 we identified a killed specimen of Eryx jaculus on the road between the towns of Turnu M gurele and Corabia, in southern Romania. This seems to be the first record of the species north of the Danube. Although surprising, the identification of E. jaculus in the area is interpreted in the light of the presence of other species of herpetofauna in the Danube floodplain with similar ecological requirements, reaching here their northern distribution limit. Survival of the species appears to be favoured by the existence of some protected areas in the region.

Abstract: this work was developed to adapt culture filtrates of alternaria solani to be used in vitro selection of resistant potato. three isolates of a. solani (i1 and i2) from eldorado do sul and rio pardo were used. two liquid media, v8 and czapek, were used to grow each of the fungal isolate, giving six culture filtrates (i1v8, i2v8, i3v8, i1cz, i2cz and i3cz). two sterilization forms, millipore and autoclave were tested. there was no difference in these two sterilization forms. tissue culture and toxic filtrates of a. solani have a potential to reduce the time in selection of resistant potato.
Ludwig’s Angina: The Importance of Oral Cavity Examination in Patients with a Neck Mass

Abstract: neck mass is a common condition in primary care. the most common affected area is the cervical lymph node. the neck region is also prone infection as structurally the nodes and spaces are in close contact with the upper respiratory tract and the alimentary tract. oral cavity is one of the most common route for harbouring infection. Poor oral hygeine and periapical dental problems are the main causes. thus, it is important to perform a complete oral cavity examination even when trismus is present. Besides dental caries, floor of the mouth should be inspected for oedema that may impose threat to the upper airway. We report a case of Ludwig’s angina originating from a periapical lesion of the lower molar stressing the importance of oral examination in patient with neck mass.
Fauna of monogenean trematodes-parasites of some cyprinid fishes from lake Prespa, Macedonia

Abstract: During parasitological investigations six species of monogenean trematodes were found on the gills of three cyprinid fish species from Lake Prespa (Macedonia), as follows: Dactylogyrus prostae and Dactylogyrus sphyrna in Leuciscus cephalus albus, Dactylogyrus erhardovae, Dactylogyrus sphyrna and Paradiplozoon zeller in Rutilus rubilio prespensis and Dactylogyrus elegantis and Dactylogyrus vistulae in Chondrostoma nasus prespensis. The prevalence in Leuciscus cephalus albus was 62.22%, in Rutilus rubilio prespensis 59.87% while in Chondrostoma nasus prespensis it was the lowest and amounted to 41.59%. The overall, prevalence of monogeneans in the investigated cyprinid fishes from Lake Prespa was 53.65%, and the mean intensity of infestation was 6.08. Among the monogenean species the highest prevalence occurred with Dactylogyrus sphyrna (25.08%), and the greatest intensity of infestation was evident in the cases of infestation with Dactylogyrus erhardovae (12.87). The greatest pathological effect was associated with the monogeneans Dactylogyrus vistulae and Paradiplozoon zeller. All monogenean species found represented the first record for such parasite fauna of fishes in Macedonia.
Morphometric traits of the yellow honeybee (Apis mellifera carnica) from Vojvodina (Northern Serbia)

Abstract: The morphometric traits of the yellow honeybee from Vojvodina were researched in this study. Samples were collected at seven locations: Banatsko Aran elovo, Fru ka Gora, Vladimirovci, Markovac and Vr ac. Each sample contained 50 bees whose body parts were prepared, scanned and measured using computer software. The average values of the measured parameters were: tongue length (6.12 mm), right-wing length (9.07 mm) and width (3.13 mm), number of wing hooks on the rear right-wing (21.44), cubital index (2,40), length (2.04 mm) and width (1.09 mm) of basitarsus of rear right leg, corbicula area (0.79 mmI), length (2.17 mm) and width (4.86 mm) of the third tergite, length (1.31 mm) and width (2.41 mm) of wax plate mirror. The obtained values of the observed parameters were consistent with the values that are characteristic to the Carniolan race of honeybees (Apis mellifera carnica Poll).
