Non-equilibrium Ionization and FIP Effect Diagnostics
Richard J. Edgar,Ruth Esser
Physics , 2000,
Abstract: We examine the accuracy of a common FIP effect diagnostic, the ratio of Ne VI to Mg VI lines in the solar transition region. Since the two ions have quite similar contribution functions near their maxima in equilibrium, the ratio of these two ions is often taken to be the abundance ratio of Ne and Mg. First we compute non-equilibrium ionization effects on the ratio f(Ne+5)/f(Mg+5) of ion fractions for a variety of simple flows through the transition region. Calculating the spectral line ratios for a few examples, we then show that non-equilibrium effects as well as temperature and density dependence must be evaluated for each line ratio used in the diagnostics.
Exploring the Physics of the Corona with Total Solar Eclipse Observations
Shadia R. Habbal,John Cooper,Adrian Daw,Adalbert Ding,Miloslav Druckmuller,Ruth Esser,Judd Johnson,Huw Morgan
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: This white paper is a call for a concerted effort to support total solar eclipse observations over the next decade, in particular for the 21 August 2017 eclipse which will traverse the US continent. With the recent advances in image processing techniques and detector technology, the time is ripe to capitalize on the unique diagnostic tools available in the visible and near infrared wavelength range to explore the physics of the corona. The advantage of coronal emission lines in this wavelength range, over their extreme ultraviolet counterparts, is (1) the significant radiative component in their excitation process (in addition to the collisional excitation), which allows for observations out to a few solar radii, (2) the higher spectral selectivity available for imaging, giving well-defined temperature responses for each bandpass (one line as opposed to many), and (3) the capability of polarization measurements in a number of spectral lines. Consequently, the evolution of the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the coronal plasma can be explored starting from the solar surface out to a few solar radii, namely the most important region of the corona where the expansion of the solar magnetic field and the acceleration of the solar wind occur. Since the planning of eclipse observations will not be possible without the invaluable NASA-published total solar eclipse bulletins by Espenak and Andersen, a call is also made to ensure continued support for these efforts.

Dendrochernes cyrneus (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones: Chernetidae) in Brandenburg
Esser, Jens
Arachnologische Mitteilungen , 2011, DOI: 10.5431/aramit4203
Abstract: The pseudoscorpion Dendrochernes cyrneus (L. Koch, 1873) is recorded for the first time in Brandenburg (Germany). The specimen was found in the ancient park of Sanssouci under the bark of a branch of a beech tree. The suitability of D. cyrneus as an indicator species for old-growth woodlands is discussed.

The tribe Hippomaneae (Euphorbiaceae) in Brazil
Esser, Hans-Joachim;
Rodriguésia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S2175-78602012000100013
Abstract: the tribe hippomaneae (euphorbiaceae) in brazil. the tribe hippomaneae is discussed with respect to its taxonomic history, its placement within the euphorbiaceae, its diagnostic characters (particularly the floral buds), current data on phylogeny and subdivision, and its general pattern of diversity. the tribe is represented in brazil with 13 genera and ca. 120 species. a key to the brazilian genera is provided. all brazilian genera are discussed, citing relevant characters, recent taxonomic literature, and the current state of knowledge, sometimes pointing to unresolved problems. for five of the genera, published revisions exist; six genera have unpublished but completed revisions or are currently under revision. actinostemon and gymnanthes are currently the most difficult genera, mostly based on the absence of available up-to-date taxonomic references. for mabea and senefeldera, two genera with completed but currently unpublished revisions, additional data are given on aspects of their taxonomy, ecology and biogeography.

DEMOCRACIES VIRTUES AND VICES VIRTUDES E VíCIUS DA DEMOCRACIA
Helena Esser dos Reis
Philósophos : Revista de Filosofia , 2008, DOI: 10.5216/phi.v11i1.3710
Abstract: Democracy can be regarded, following Alexis de Tocquevilles thoughts, from two complementary standpoints: the equality standpoint – where equality is understood as a social condition; and the liberty standpoint – understood as a political condition. However, he observes, democracy is not a priori what it should be, denunciating, in this way, the imbalance between equality and liberty, the greater the imbalance as poor are the public virtues. We intend to enroll in a debate involving ethics and politics, by considering vices and virtues inherent to democracy, analyzing Tocqueville′s ideas. We start examining the causes of vice and the possibility of virtue, as Tocqueville sees them, in order to, next, attack the relationship of ethics and politics.
