In-vitro free radical scavenging activity of Ixora coccinea L

Abstract: Antioxidant activity of the methanol extract of Ixora coccinea L. was determined by DPPH free radical scavenging assay, reducing power and total antioxidant capacity using phosphomolybdenum method. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed that the extract of the flower of I. coccinea possesses flavonoids, steroids and tannin materials. The extract showed significant activities in all antioxidant assays compared to the standard antioxidant in a dose dependent manner and remarkable activities to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) may be attributed to the high amount of hydrophilic phenolics. In DPPH radical scavenging assay the IC50 value of the extract was found to be 100.53 μg/mL while ascorbic acid had the IC50 value 58.92 μg/mL. Moreover, I. coccinea extract showed strong reducing power and total antioxidant capacity.

A major environmental concern due to dispersal of industrial and urban wastes generated by human activities is the contamination of soil. The release of heavy metals into the terrestrial ecosystem is a major problem. Accumulation of heavy metals in environment and particularly in soil is a serious environmental concern, as the accumulated heavy metal ions can find their way into living organisms via contamination of ground water or food chain. This praxis urgently requires and demands governmental regulations in India. Two samples of sludge were collected from Banthar Industrial Pollution Control Company (BIPCC), UP State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC), Leather Technology Park, Banthar, Unnao, India. In the present study, the phytoremediation potential of Catharanthus roseus, a valued medicinal plant, with respect to chromium has been analyzed. C. roseus was shown to absorb up to about 38% of the amount of Cr present in primary and secondary sludge amended soil through roots and accumulate it to about 22% in leaves. Effect of chromium concentration on the status of antioxidant enzyme peroxidase (POD) and detoxification enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) from C. roseus leaves was also observed and determined. Increased expressions of POD and GST were observed on native PAGE under stress conditions as compared to control. C. roseus can well tolerate low amounts of chromium (and accumulate it to about 22% in leaves) and can, thus, prove useful in the reclamation and remediation of chromium contaminated soil and land.

Abstract: A multiobjective variational problem involving higher order derivatives is considered and optimality condi-tions for this problem are derived. A Mond-Weir type dual to this problem is constructed and various duality results are validated under generalized invexity. Some special cases are mentioned and it is also pointed out that our results can be considered as a dynamic generalization of the already existing results in nonlinear programming.
In Vitro Organogenesis of Colocasia esculenta cv. Antiquorum L.  [PDF]

Abstract: In vitro organogenesis of an upland species of Colocasia esculenta cv. antiquorum L. was examined in relation to different explants like meristem and parenchymatous storage tissues with or without anthocyanin layer, four levels of each of Kn, 2,4-D, NAA and BAP and four incubation environments such as: 1) 16 h 3 Kl light intensity + 24°C ± 2°C; 2) 24 h dark + 24°C ± 2°C; 3) 24 h dark + 30°C ± 3°C and 4) 12 h diffuse light + 30°C ± 3°C. Only meristems showed proliferation with various degree of intensity both at 16 h 3 Kl light + 24°C ± 2°C and 24 h dark + 24°C ± 2°C conditions and poor response with different levels of Kn + NAA either in light or in the dark. Cultures with NAA + BAP were proliferated very quickly with very high degree of intensity. The cultures under dark did not proliferate for 20 days which upon transfer to light showed high degree of proliferation. Cultures with NAA + BAP formed calluses more pronouncedly at dark than that occurred in the light. Parenchymatous tissues with or without anthocyanin did not proliferate but the tissues with anthocyanin lost pigmentation after 25 - 30 days and turned to grey colour after 50 days while tissues without anthocyanin turned to green colour with shinny pimples indicating that protocorm may be developed. No culture under high temperature environment (30°C ± 3°C) neither survived nor proliferated. The meristems in culture were died within 15 - 20 days while others within 25-30 days. In conclusion, a combination of NAA (0.5 - 3.0 mg/l) and BAP (0.5 - 2.0 mg/l) and an incubation photoperiod of 16 h coupled with temperature of 24°C ± 2°C were found most suitable for in vitro culture of Colocasia esculenta cv. antiquorum L.
A Combined Forward Osmosis and Membrane Distillation System for Sidestream Treatment  [PDF]

Abstract: Separate treatment of high-nutrient sidestream is an efficient and cost effective way to decrease the loading on the main plant, resulting in lower effluent nutrient concentration. This study investigated the use of a combined forward osmosis-membrane distillation (FO-MD) system for the removal of nitrogen present in high concentration in sidestream from anaerobic digestion process. The combined system was able to achieve almost 100% rejection of solids and acetic acid, and more than 98% rejection of NH3-N from the sidestream. The high rejection of NH3-N was mainly achieved by the FO process. The solids in the feed solution contributed to fouling problem in both FO and MD, resulting in significant decline in flux. However, 76% or higher flux recovery was achieved for FO membrane by cleaning with tap water. We observed that flux recovery was due to removal of solids from the membrane surface by the cleaning process. FO membrane also demonstrated excellent performance for continuous operation when cleaned for 15 min in every 24 h interval. Overall, the combined FO-MD system was found to be an effective solution for treatment of nutrient rich sidestream.
Study on the Estrous Cycle Regularity of Cryopreserved Rat Ovarian Tissues after Heterotopic Transplantation  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the re-initiation of ovarian function in cryopreserved ovarian grafts by means of vaginal smear of transplant rats. Methods: A total of 40 SPF-SD female rats (5 - 6 week-old) were randomly divided into three groups (blank control, castration control and transplant group). Ovaries were removed by surgical procedure then after cryopreservation and thawing procedures the ovarian tissues pushed inside the back muscles gap in transplant group. On the first PO day, vaginal smear collection was daily initiated. After 30 days, the PO day when the estrous cycle was re-initiated was considered for analysis as well as the estrous days and the number of estrous cycles. Results: Normal control group had a regular estrous cycle, while the transplant group had an estrous cycle disorder within first 2 weeks and later 2 weeks after the transplantation while the duration of diestrus cycle lasted longer. At the same time, the castration group had lost the normal estrous cycle, keeping continue in the stage of diestrus. Conclusion: In transplanted animals the re-initiated ovarian function can be predicted with alteration between estrous and diestrus phases with predominant estrous irregularity. Moreover, short autotransplanted graft duration needs time to perfuse by new blood vessels and hormone secretions, so could not directly affect its target organs to function properly.

Abstract: Excessive input of heavy metals in water reservoir and cultivated land primarily affects the growth and yield of crops. The aim of this work was to study the mechanism of Cd toxicity and damage to photosynthetic pigments and their efficiency and the potential of natural (OA) and synthetic chelators (EDTA) in assisting the phytoextractor sunflower plant. The pot experiment was laid out in a complete randomized way for Cd, chelators and hybrids at seedling, vegetative and reproductive stages with three replications. Cd affects the gas exchange parameters directly or indirectly by affecting the light and dark reactions, while indirect effect includes inhibition of chlorophyll and carotenoids biosynthesis and degradation and alteration in Chl a/b ratio. Among two chelators, natural chelator OA found to be very supportive in ameliorating the Cd tocixity by phytoextractor in assistance to sunflower hybrid Hysun-33.
An Appraisal of Gender Mainstreaming in Census of India 2011  [PDF]

Population census is a total process of collecting, compiling, evaluating, analyzing and publishing demographic, economic and social data pertaining, at a specified time, to all persons in a country or in a well defined part of a country, drawing valid conclusions in situations of uncertainty and variability. Usually in the context of prevailing gender discrimination issues, the figures revealed by means of census also have divulged gender bias. Taking notice of this, efforts were made to make Census of India 2011 gender sensitive in order to reveal a gender sensitive and objective picture of Indian population. The present paper aims to understand and evaluate the whole activity of Census of India 2011 as a tool ensuring gender mainstreaming.

Characteristics of Iranian Women with Breast Cancer

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in adult female population. Great variations exist in incidence and mortality rate of this cancer in different populations. One of the most important and central factors that can greatly affect mortality of a cancer in a population is the stage of cancer which comes under medical attention. In this cross-sectional study, we describe characteristics of 1500 cases of breast cancer at the time of diagnosis and evaluate probable association between some factors and stage of cancer in which cancer comes under medical attention. This retrospective cross-sectional study reviewed files of 1500 cases of female breast cancer. These cases had been referred to a breast cancer private clinic and diagnosis of breast cancer was confirmed by pathologic study. Data about following factors were extracted from files: age of patients, educational level, profession, interval between seeking medical attention and diagnosis confirmation, family history of breast cancer in first-degree relatives, method of diagnosis, results of mammography, tumor size, number of involved lymph nodes, total number of resected lymph nodes and pathologic stage of tumor. All data of been obtained at the time of diagnosis. Mean age of patients was 49.38±10.46 years. From patients with known size of tumor, 74.5% had a size of >2 cm in the population and in patients with known stage of disease, 78.3% of patients were stage 2 or more which means that they had at least one involved lymph node. On an average, an interval of 2.73±1.15 years existed between the time of suspicion and time of definite diagnosis. Finally we conclude that stage of breast cancer at presentation is higher in our country when compared with western countries. This difference is both the result of lower compliance of patients and defects in public services.

Abstract: Globalization is a rapidly changing process that has shifted its dimension from merely One World Economy to complete integration that includes economic, social, cultural, and political aspects. This article states the present trend and move of global economy along with its process in legal and institutional aspects. There are potential dangers as well as controversies of globalization especially from the developing countries perspectives. So, these countries should try to formulate necessary safety nets to cope with the present mega trend world economy realizing the challenges of facing costs of globalization so that they can offset the gains with a positive balance.
