O lugar do cancro na estatística sanitária portuguesa (1850-1933)
Pinto Costa,Rui Manuel;
Dynamis , 2011, DOI: 10.4321/S0211-95362011000200013
Costa, Rui Manuel Pinto;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702012000200004
Abstract: this article deals with the bio-medical investigation of cancer studies in portugal between 1889 and 1945. by examining the main works produced between the end of the nineteenth century and the middle of the twentieth century, it has been possible to illuminate and define a field of scientific endeavour which has been the scope of little study to date. starting from the introduction and consolidation of the defining principles of experimental oncology, distinct phases can be discerned in the production of scientific material, alternating between support for the dominant theories and the application of methods for artificially creating the disease. in accordance with the principal phases of investigation, a brief systematic overview of the scope of these oncological studies is presented.
Rui Manuel Pinto Costa
Revista da Faculdade de Letras : Historia , 2010,
Abstract: The present article approaches the scientifi c and political context that where in the origin of the institutionalization of the fight against cancer in Portugal over the first quarter of the 20th century. One stresses the emerging medical speech, the main medical theories, as well as the first statistical studies that prompted doctors and politicians to coordenate the fight against cancer. Although there were moments of medical tension and political disinterest, the project was materialized in 1923, with the establishment of the Instituto Português Para o Estudo do Cancro.
Rui Manuel Pinto Costa
Rui Manuel Pinto Costa
CEM : Cultura, Espa?o & Memória , 2010,
Abstract: The object of this article is the Portuguese anticancer propaganda in the first half of the 20th century. It intends to show that although greater propagandistic efforts were made following the foundation of the Instituto Português para o Estudo do Cancro in 1923, it would become more intense during the Estado Novo period. The impact of medical discourse on social agents and politicians, materialized into a campaign of constant social persuasion. The preventive attitude of the fight against cancer became one of the main agents in the conquest of national health awareness, in a country still devoid of relevant achievements in areas such as health education for the masses.
Rui Manuel Pinto Costa
CEM : Cultura, Espa?o & Memória , 2011,
Abstract: Privileging particularly historiographic approaches, this paper aims to present a bibliographicalsurvey and an overview of the most representative works published in the area of the history of cancer, asubject that is integrated in the wider sphere of the history of health and biomedical sciences.
Abstract: The promotion and defence of the professional classes have been associated with institutions which congregate the common interests of their members. In the case of the contemporary medical class, it was in the context of the Medical Association (Ordem dos Médicos) that these professionals publicised and discussed the promotion of their class before the ruling political power. In this essay, one addresses the trajectory of this institution, the efforts it developed and its more significant moments in the political context of Portugal’s New State. One emphasised mainly the process established by the Association which aimed at setting up the legitimacy of the class to perform the duties of supremacy and control within the national health system. At the same time, one stressed the role played by Miller Guerra, analysed as an outstanding actor in this context of revendication and promotion of medical power.
Universality in the stock exchange
Rui Gon?alves,Alberto Pinto
Physics , 2008,
Abstract: We analyze the constituents stocks of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA30) and the Standard & Poor's 100 index (S&P100) of the NYSE stock exchange market. Surprisingly, we discover the data collapse of the histograms of the DJIA30 price fluctuations and of the S&P100 price fluctuations to the universal non-parametric Bramwell-Holdsworth-Pinton (BHP) distribution. Since the BHP probability density function appears in several other dissimilar phenomena, our result reveals an universal feature of the stock exchange market.

Abstract: This study intends to carry through a content analysis of the Teses inaugurais da Escola Médico-Cirúrgica do Porto , published between 1827 and 1910, appealing to bibliometrics and thematic categorization of the corpus, as well as pointing out the potential of these documents for the history of health and biomedical sciences in Portugal.
River scaling analysis and the BHP universality hypothesis
Rui Gon?alves,Nico Stollenwerk,Alberto Pinto
Physics , 2007,
Abstract: The XY-model shows in two dimensions in the strong coupling regime a universal distribution, named BHP, which in turn also describes other models of criticality and self-organized criticality and even describes natural data as river level and flow. We start by analysing the two dimensional XY-model and calculate the BHP probability density function. The results obtained for several dissimilar phenomenons which includes the deseasonalised Danube height data raised the universality hypothesis for rivers. This hypothesis is tested for the Iberian river Douro. Deviations from the BHP are found especially for medium and small runoffs. For regimes closer to the natural flow the fluctuations tend to follow the universal curve again.
