Implicit Attitudes of Chinese University Students towards Altruism: Evidence from Single Category Implicit Association Test  [PDF]

Abstract: IAT measures are supposed to be able to remove the effects that come from people’s natural tendency to believe that they have socially desirable traits. In the present study, the Single Category Implicit Association Test (SC-IAT) was used to explore implicit attitudes and self-images of Chinese university students with respect to altruism. Three kinds of altruism (general altruism, kin altruism and reciprocal altruism) were considered to detect the participants’ implicit attitudes and self-images. Specific wording was incorporated in the SC-IAT measures to explore whether the students believed that apparent altruism in others was honest or hypocritical. The results show: 1) Chinese students generally hold positive implicit attitudes towards kin, reciprocal, and general altruism, but the positive attitudes towards reciprocal and kin altruism are significantly stronger than towards general altruism. 2) Chinese students regard themselves neither as altruistic nor selfish in their implicit self-concepts. 3) Chinese students tend to judge altruism as honest rather than hypocritical behavior, especially in the cases of kin and reciprocal altruism.
Study of traditional Chinese medicine pulse signals in patients with coronary heart disease based on recurrence quantification analysis

Abstract: Objective: By using recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) to analyze traditional Chinese medicine pulse signals of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), this study aims to find nonlinear dynamic parameters of pulses to distinguish patients with CHD from normal subjects. Methods: First, pulse signals were collected using ZBOX-Ⅰ pulse digitization gathering analyzer from October 2007 to June 2008. RQA was used to analyze RQA parameters of pulses of 63 patients with CHD and 61 normal subjects. RQA parameters included recurrence rate (RR), determinism (DET), averaged diagonal length (L), entropy of diagonal length (ENTR), length of longest diagonal line (Lmax), laminarity (LAM), trapping time (TT) and length of longest vertical line (Vmax). Then, rank-sum test and BoxPlot were employed to find significant difference and distribution of RQA parameters. Lastly, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess the diagnostic value of the measurements with significant difference.Results: There were significant differences in RQA parameters of pulse signals between the two groups, including RR, DET, L, ENTR, LAM, TT and Vmax, and their areas under the ROC curves were 1.000, 0.898, 0.653, 0.673, 0.885, 0.898, 0.986 and 0.994, respectively. Conclusion: Compared with the normal subjects, the pulse signals of the patients with CHD are presented with more certainty, regularity and stability. RQA measurements of RR, TT, Vmax, DET and LAM show good diagnostic value according to their ROC curves.
Feature extraction and recognition of traditional Chinese medicine pulse based on hemodynamic principles

Abstract: In this paper, factors contributing to the formation of pulse wave were analyzed based on hemodynamic principles. It is considered that formation of pulse wave was related to its propagation and reflection characteristics. Propagation of the pulse wave was characterized by pulse wave velocity, and reflection of the pulse wave was characterized by reflection coefficient. Pulse wave velocity and reflection coefficient were proposed as the eigenvectors of pulse wave in pulse diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine, and support vector machine (SVM) was used to recognize slippery pulse, stringy pulse and plain pulse. Pulse wave velocity and reflection coefficient of the slippery, stringy and plain pulses in healthy people were calculated in this study, and SVM with Gaussian radial basis function was used for classifying. Results showed that pulse wave velocity and reflection coefficient with physiological and pathological significance had advantages in distinguishing slippery pulse, stringy pulse and plain pulse, which offered a new idea for recognizing pulse condition.

Abstract: With atomic spontaneously generated coherence (SGC), we propose a novel scheme to coherently control the atom--photon momentum entanglement through atomic internal coherence. A novel phenomena of ``phase entanglement in momentum'' is proposed, and we found, under certain conditions, that super--high degree of momentum entanglement can be produced with this scheme.

Abstract: With the quantum interference between two transition pathways, we demonstrate a novel scheme to coherently control the momentum entanglement between a single atom and a single photon. The unavoidable disentanglement is also studied from the first principle, which indicates that the stably entangled atom--photon system with superhigh degree of entanglement may be realized with this scheme under certain conditions.

Entanglement in resonant photon scattering

Abstract: Single--photon which is initially uncorrelated with atom, will evolve to be entangled with the atom on their continuous kinetic variables in the process of resonant scattering. We find the relations between the entanglement and their physical control parameters, which indicates that high entanglement can be reached by broadening the scale of the atomic wave or squeezing the linewidth of the incident single--photon pulse.

Abstract: Stereo video is widely used because it can provide depth information. However, it is difficult to store and transmit stereo video due to the huge data amount. So, high efficient channel encoding algorithm and proper transmission strategy is needed to deal with the video transmission over limited bandwidth channel. In this paper, unequal error protection (UEP) based on low density parity check (LDPC) code was used to transmit stereo video over wireless channel with limited bandwidth. Different correction level LDPC code was used according to the importance of video stream to reconstruction at the receiver. Simulation result shows that the proposed transmission scheme increases the PSNR of reconstructed image, and improves the subjective effect.
Baculovirus Mediated Experimental Research on Targeted Egr1-Kringle 5 Gene Radiotherapy in Lung Adenocarcinoma  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the feasibility of temporally and spatially restricted Kringle5 expression induced by radiation, as well as the dual effect of radiotherapy and antiangiogenic therapy in lung adenocarcinoma in vitro. Methods: We first constructed recombinant baculovirus vectors containing Egr1 promoter and human plasminogen Kringle5 gene (rhK5), then transfected them into lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549). Transfect efficiency of the baculovirus for gene transfer in A549 cells and the activity of Egr1 promoter induced by X-radiation were detected by fluorescence microscopy. The rhK5 mRNA transcription and rhK5 protein expression were detected by Real-time PCR and Western blot assay, respectively. The apoptosis asssay of human umbilical veins endothelial cells (HUVEC) was analyzed by flow cytometry. Results: The recombinant baculovirus were successfully transfected into A549 and HUVEC cells. As for the temporal regulation, the rhK5 mRNA transcription and rhK5 protein expression were elevated with the irradiation time significantly. And the HUVEC apoptotic percentage increased in relation to the irradiation time as well. As for the spatial regulation, rhK5 mRNA transcription level of A549 cell lines transfected with recombinant baculovirus Egr1-K5 was significantly higher than that of control groups after the same dose of X-radiation. When we analyzed the dose and frequency of X-radiation, no difference was observed among each dose after continuously three-times of irradiation. Conclusion: Baculovirus-mediated Egr1-K5 can be used in gene radiotherapy for its temporary and spatial controllable rhK5 expression by X-radiation and the consequent HUVEC apoptosis in vitro study. And low dose and more times of irradiation might be more effective. It would provide a promising way for the tumor treatment.
