Leandro, Carol Góis;Amorim, Marco Fidalgo;Hirabara, Sandro Massao;Curi, Rui;Castro, Raul Manhes de;
Revista de Nutri??o , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-52732009000400011
Abstract: there is considerable evidence for the induction of different phenotypes by variations in fetal and neonatal environment. undernutrition during this critical development period is associated with risk of metabolic disease in adult life; this biological phenomenon is termed programming. physical activity during gestation results in maternal physiological adaptations and increased oxygen and nutrients in the fetoplacental compartment. the main goal of this work is to discuss the mechanisms of fetal programming induced by nutrition and the probable modulating effect of physical activity during gestation. papers published between 1990 and 2008 listed in the medline pubmed, lilacs and bireme databases were used. the search keywords were: nutrition, fetal programming, gestation, physical activity, physical exercise, and metabolism. in conclusion, undernutrition can program the onset of metabolic diseases in adult life, while physical activity during gestation increases the availability of nutrients and oxygen for the fetus, thereby positively impacting fetal growth and birth weight.
Leandro, Carol Góis;Castro, Raul Manhes de;Nascimento, Elizabeth;Pithon-Curi, Tania Cristina;Curi, Rui;
Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-86922007000500012
Abstract: moderate physical training enhances the defense mechanisms, while intense physical training induces to immune suppression. the underlying mechanisms are associated with the link between nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. it suggests autonomic patterns and modulation of immune response. immune cells, when exposed to regular bouts of stress, develop a mechanism of tolerance. in many tissues, it has been demonstrated that the response to aggressive conditions is attenuated by moderate physical training. thus, training can induce tolerance to aggressive/stressful situations. in this review, studies suggesting the adaptation mechanisms of the immune system in response to physical training will be reported.
As espécies exóticas somos nós: reflex?o a propósito do ecoturismo na Ilha Grande
Prado, Rosane Manhes;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832003000200011
Abstract: this article analyzes the consequences of the arrival of tourism in ilha grande (angra dos reis, rio de janeiro), especially for the community of vila do abra?o, that has been suddenly transformed into a spot for a mass of tourists. different cases that have been equally studied suggest a model for the arrival and growth of touristic activities in places where these did not exist before, illustrated here with the case of vila do abra?o. here, the antagonism between "natives" and "nonnatives" becomes a central issue with the growth of tourism, hindering the incorporation of an environmental ideology and also the acceptance of general proposals for "an ideal touristic development".
Dieta de Traupíneos (Passeriformes, Emberizidae) no Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca, Minas Gerais, Brasil
Manhes, Marco A.;
Iheringia. Série Zoologia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0073-47212003000100007
Abstract: eleven species of tanagers in ibitipoca state park, minas gerais, southeastern brazil, were studied for 12 months and the birds diet was described. fruits of 52 plant species were the main item consumed for all tanagers, representing 59.70% of all items in 1330 events, although different proportions in the use of this resource have been found among the bird species. the main plant families found were myrtaceae with eight species accounting for 22.29% (n=177), and melastomataceae with seven species accounting for 22.29% (n=177) of fruit intake. the most frequent plant species in the diet was cecropia glaziovi snethl. (cecropiaceae), which made up 17.76% (n=141) of fruit intake of all species of tanagers. arthropod consumption came second with 22.63% (n=301), but flowers, leaves, nectar, food remains left by tourists and galls were also represented. several environmental features influenced diet composition. an asteraceae, vanillosmopsis erythropappa schultz, very common in the park, was important for some birds as its flowers attracted arthropods and its branches and leaves were used as a substrate for insectivory. fruit intake rate, some bird-plant interaction and features of food-handling were also discussed, pointing to the importance of these birds for the structure of the heterogeneous local landscape, possibly through the spread of seeds of different plant species.

Spatial dynamics of understorey insectivorous birds and arthropods in a southeastern Brazilian Atlantic woodlot
Manhes, MA.;Dias, MM.;
Brazilian Journal of Biology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-69842011000100003
Abstract: spatial distribution and spatial relationships in capture rates of understorey insectivorous birds and density of arthropods were investigated in a patch of upper montane rain forest in minas gerais state, southeastern brazil, from january to december 2004. the composition of the arthropod fauna collected was similar to that reported for other tropical forests, with predominance of araneae, coleoptera, hymenoptera and hemiptera non-heteroptera. a total of 26 bird species were captured, among which the more common were dysithamnus mentalis, conopophaga lineata, platyrinchus mystaceus, basileuterus culicivorus and sclerurus scansor. variation in the bird capture rates among sampling net lines were not correlated with arthropod density. rather, individual analyses of some bird species suggest that spatial distribution of understorey insectivorous birds is better explained by habitat type.
