Foraging behavior and prey interactions by a guild of predators on various lifestages of Bemisia tabaci
James R. Hagler,Charles G. Jackson,Rufus Isaacs,Scott A. Machtley
Journal of Insect Science , 2004,
Abstract: The sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is fed on by a wide variety of generalist predators, but there is little information on these predator-prey interactions. A laboratory investigation was conducted to quantify the foraging behavior of the adults of five common whitefly predators presented with a surfeit of whitefly eggs, nymphs, and adults. The beetles, Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville and Collops vittatus (Say) fed mostly on whitefly eggs, but readily and rapidly preyed on all of the whitefly lifestages. The true bugs, Geocoris punctipes (Say) and Orius tristicolor (Say) preyed almost exclusively on adult whiteflies, while Lygus hesperus Knight preyed almost exclusively on nymphs. The true bugs had much longer prey handling times than the beetles and spent much more of their time feeding (35-42%) than the beetles (6-7%). These results indicate that generalist predators vary significantly in their interaction with this host, and that foraging behavior should be considered during development of a predator-based biological control program for B. tabaci.
The Existential Turn: Reappraising Being and Time’s Overcoming of Metaphysics
Rufus Duits
Kritike : an Online Journal of Philosophy , 2010,
Abstract: The task of this paper is to propose an answer to these relatedquestions. It amounts to an attempt to work through conceptually step by step Heidegger’s so called “overcoming of metaphysics”. It is true of course that the locution, “the overcoming of metaphysics”, does not appear in Being and Time. The discourse of the overcoming of metaphysics is held by Heidegger’s commentators to belong to a period post-dating the early work, after the so called Kehre. I shall stubbornly evade this knotty issue of Heidegger interpretation here. For my purposes it suffices merely if our understanding ofBeing and Time, its content, intent and consequence, can be deepened or expanded if it is read in the light of the task of overcoming metaphysics—or at least in the light of that task as it is to be conceived in the context I shall present here. What is to be understood by the phrase “the overcoming of metaphysics”?

Band-Dominated Fredholm Operators and a Question of Rabinovich, Roch and Silbermann
Rufus Willett
Mathematics , 2008,
Abstract: Withdrawn due to a likely error with the homeomorphism at line (4). Old abstract: In the monograph 'Limit Operators and their Applications in Operator Theory', the authors define the operator spectrum of a band-dominated operator T and prove that T is Fredholm if and only if all of the operators in its operator spectrum are invertible with uniformly bounded inverses. They also ask whether the uniform boundedness condition can in fact be dispensed with. In this note we answer this question affirmatively.
Random graphs, weak coarse embeddings, and higher index theory
Rufus Willett
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: This paper studies higher index theory for a random sequence of bounded degree, finite graphs with diameter tending to infinity. We show that in a natural model for such random sequences the following hold almost surely: the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is injective; the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is not surjective; the maximal coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is an isomorphism. These results are closely tied to issues of expansion in graphs: in particular, we also show that such random sequences almost surely do not have geometric property (T), a strong form of expansion. The key geometric ingredients in the proof are due to Mendel and Naor: in our context, their results imply that a random sequence of graphs almost surely admits a weak form of coarse embedding into Hilbert space.
Some notes on property A
Rufus Willett
Mathematics , 2006,
Abstract: We provide an expository account of Guoliang Yu's property A. The piece starts from the basic definitions, and goes on to discuss closure properties of the class of property A spaces (and groups) and the relationship of property A to coarse embeddability problems, operator theory, and amenability. It finishes with some examples of non-property A spaces. We also include an annotated bibliography covering much of the related literature.
A non-amenable groupoid whose maximal and reduced $C^*$-algebras are the same
Rufus Willett
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: We construct a locally compact groupoid with the properties in the title. Our example is based closely on constructions used by Higson, Lafforgue, and Skandalis in their work on counterexamples to the Baum-Connes conjecture. It is a bundle of countable groups over the one point compactification of the natural numbers, and is Hausdorff, second countable and \'{e}tale.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography training in the United Kingdom: A critical review
Peter Isaacs
World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy , 2011,
Abstract: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography training used to be in virtually all district general hospitals, resulting in a large number of trainees with an inadequate case load and achieving poor levels of skill. Training is now restricted to a small number of trainees working in approved units. Continuous audit of outcomes and the appointment of a training lead in the unit are essential. Use of the global rating scale helps clinicians advise hospital administration on the priorities for a quality training program.
