Abstract: studies on the collagen system of the human myocardium are still limited compared to those on small laboratory animals. the aim of this work was to observe the collagen tissue of the myocardium of the human heart as a function of age. the types of collagen, as well as the density of collagen tissue and the diameter of collagen fibrils, were examined. fragments of the left ventricular wall from 15 hearts, 5 from children, 5 from young adults, and 5 from elderly individuals, were analyzed by using the picrosirius-polarization method and by transmission electron microscopy (tem). the results showed the presence of collagen type iii and collagen type i, both in the endomysium and perimysium of the 3 groups studied. measurements of collagen content in myocardial tissue displayed that both endomysial and perimysial collagen increase in number and thickness in the adult and elderly. these histochemical results coincided with the observations obtained with the electron microscope in showing an increase in the number of collagen fibrils with a large diameter in the adult and elderly hearts. the present results on cardiac collagen may be important for assessing the pathogenesis of several cardiopathies in the hearts of children, young adults, and the elderly.

Abstract: the joint torque is an important variable related to children with cerebral palsy. the present study analyzed kinetic parameters during elbow flexion and extension movements in healthy and cerebral palsy children. ten healthy and 10 cerebral palsy children participated of the study. an isokinetic dynamometer was used to measure the elbow mean peak torque, mean angle peak torque, coefficient of variation and acceleration during flexion and extension movements at different angular speeds. the mean peak torque on extension movement in healthy children group was significant higher compared to the cerebral palsy group. the coefficient of variation on both flexion and extension movements was significantly higher in cerebral palsy group. however there were significantly difference on both groups compared the lowest and highest velocities. although the results showed no difference in flexor peak torque, the acceleration is significantly lower in lowest and highest angular velocity.

Abstract: background: the effects of aging on papillary muscle have been widely demonstrated, but no data on the effects of exercise on the age-related changes are available. objective: to analyze the effects of aging on the morphological and quantitative properties of papillary muscle and investigate whether a long-term moderate exercise program would exert a protective effect against the effects of aging. methods: we used electron microscopy to study the density of myocytes, capillaries and connective tissue and the cross-sectional area of myocytes of the papillary muscle of the left ventricle of 6- and 13-month-old untrained and exercised wistar rats. results: as expected, the volume density of myocytes declined significantly (p<0.05) with aging. the length density of myocardial capillaries also declined with aging, but not significantly. the interstitial volume fraction of the papillary muscle tissue increased significantly (p<0.05) with age. the number of myocyte profiles showed a reduction of 20% that was accompanied by myocyte hypertrophy in the aged rats (p<0.05). animals submitted to a 60-minute daily session,, 5 days/wk at 1.8 km.h-1 of moderate running on a treadmill for 28 weeks showed a reversion of all the observed aging effects on papillary muscle. conclusion: the present study supports the concept that long-term exercise training restrains the aging-related deleterious changes in the papillary muscle.

Abstract: regular daytime napping behavior, also known as siesta culture, is influenced by circadian, cultural and environmental factors. this research analyzes characteristics of regular daytime napping in brazilian native terenas. we evaluared 65 adults ( 32 m; 33 f ) from 18 to 75 years, with a mean age of 37.2, from the indian reservation village córrego do meio, in the central region of mato grosso do sul. daytime napping characteristics were evaluated by means of a standard questionnaire applied to each individual. it was observed that weekly daytime napping (at least once a week) was present in 72.3% of the population. there was a tendency to occur in males. the effects of weekends was mild. mean onset time of daytime sleep was 12.2 h, remarkably earlier than usually described in urban populations. this data stresses the need to consider ethnic influences in order to understand sleep habits.

Abstract: developmental and cultural factors affect sleep habits in childhood. the objective of this research was to determine sleep habits of children in the isolated rural african-brazilian community of furnas do dionísio, mato grosso do sul, brazil. the members of this community are closely related descendants of the ex-slave dionísio, and remained in relative geographical isolation for about a century. sleep characteristics of 55 children (35m; 20f), 2 to 10 year olds, were evaluated in interviews with their mothers. the results showed that cosleeping, in the same bed with family members, was present in 80.0% of the 2-3 year olds; decreasing to 25.0% of the 8-10 year olds. only 5.4% of the children slept alone in their own bedroom. mean number of persons per bedroom was 2.8. only 7.0% of the bedrooms had tv; 98.1% slept in silence. the data obtained support the need to weigh cultural factors influence on sleep.

Correa, Sílvio Marcus de Souza;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702010000100011
Abstract: in the early days of bathing resorts some german immigrants were found not only among the bathers, but also among the entrepreneurs of the incipient branch of 'curism-tourism'. it was a small group of immigrants of urban origin who, in general, already knew the curative or reinvigorating advantages of the baths in european bathing resorts. among them, doctors were prominent, important emissaries of a scientific discourse in favor of bathing resorts. the therapeutic practices of bathing in the sea arrived to meridional brazil with the european immigration of the second half of the nineteenth century, although its diffusion only took place in the first half of the following century, when the first bathing beaches in rio grande do sul were developed.
O 'combate' às doen?as tropicais na imprensa colonial alem?
Correa, Sílvio Marcus de Souza;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2013, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702013005000003
Abstract: this article shows how much certain german language newspapers were a vehicule for reporting to the lay public on 'combating' tropical diseases. through the press, immigrants and their descendents in brazil were informed not only about the diseases which afflicted german colonists in africa, but also about measures concerning sanitation, prophylaxis and experiments with tropical medicine, etc. based on hemerographic sources, it shows how successful the overseas german communities were in sharing their experiences regarding health in tropical and/or sub-tropical regions.
