Rethinking Latin America. A Call for a Debate on a Critical, Demonstrative and Cognitive Latin American Concept
Rubén Torres MARTíNEZ
Studii de Stiinta si Cultura , 2011,
Abstract: The author tries to re-conceptualize the terms of Latin America in three views: critical, demonstrative, and cognitive. The author goes through examples of cultural, geographical and historical conceptualizations, to show how and why the concept of Latin America is constantly under construction. From this idea, the author tries to demonstrate that the concept of Latin America is an unfinished analytical tool, which has much still to explore and exploit. The author concludes with an appeal to set aside pre-conceived judgments and assessments that are currently dominated by a concept such as Latin America.
Putting into perspective of the cleavage State-Church in Mexico
Rubén TORRES-MARTíNEZ
Studii de Stiinta si Cultura , 2012,
Abstract: Since the independence of Mexico (1821), two political groups have been competing for getting the control of the country. Throughout the twentieth century, the hegemonic party by using the entire state apparatus managed the system to make impossible to observe the cleavages in the country. We have studied and exploited the concept of cleavage as a tool. This concept allows us to observe where the lines are which divide the society. It has been studied the case of two political parties: the National Action Party (PAN) and the Party of Democratic Revolution (PRD). The constitutional amendments that occurred during Salinas’s administration have faced again the State and the Catholic Church. Indeed, this conflict has become the center of national debate. We can see that the conflict has been institutionalized and has continued until today. Also the conflict reveals a history cleavage back to the time of independence.
Evolutionary game theory and the tower of Babel of cooperation: Altruism, free-riding, parasitism and the structure of the interactions in a world with finite resources
Rubén J. Requejo-Martínez
Quantitative Biology , 2013,
Abstract: The study of the evolution of cooperative behaviours --which provide benefits to others-- and altruism --which provides benefits to others at a cost to oneself-- has been on the core of the evolutionary game theoretical framework since its foundation. The fast development of the theory during the last years has improved our knowledge of the issue, but carried attached a diversification of concepts which affected communication between scientists. Furthermore, the main root of conflict in the struggle for life identified by Darwin, the limited amount of resources present in any ecosystem, which is assumed to keep a constant population size in most game theoretical studies, has only recently been taken into account as explicitly influencing the evolutionary process. This review concerns about both issues, the conceptual diversification during the last years and the new results of the resource dependent models. In extenso: After a historical introduction, a review of the most important concepts is carried out. Then it is shown that pairwise interactions and additive fitness determine prisoner's dilemmas (PDs) or harmony games, that two altruists interacting together may determine a PD, and that the interaction environment of the most cooperative and less selfish individual in any population is always a PD. After that, it is shown that in addition to altruists versus free-riders, the combination of free-riders and parasites determines a fundamentally different PD. Computer simulations are then carried out to show that random exploration of parasitism, free-riding and altruism enables coexistence of the three strategies without the need of reciprocating, punishing or rewarding strategies. To finish, the problem of the limitation of resources is reviewed, showing that...
Secreted phospholipase A2-IIA-induced a phenotype of activated microglia in BV-2 cells requires epidermal growth factor receptor transactivation and proHB-EGF shedding
Rubén Martín, Claudia Cordova, Maria L Nieto
Journal of Neuroinflammation , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1742-2094-9-154
Abstract: Primary and immortalized microglial cells were stimulated by sPLA2-IIA in order to characterize the cytokine-like actions of the phospholipase. The hallmarks of activated microglia analyzed include: mitogenic response, phagocytic capabilities and induction of inflammatory mediators. In addition, we studied several of the potential molecular mechanisms involved in those events. The direct exposure of microglial cells to sPLA2-IIA stimulated, in a time- and dose-dependent manner, their phagocytic and proliferative capabilities. sPLA2-IIA also triggered the synthesis of the inflammatory proteins COX-2 and TNFα. In addition, EGFR phosphorylation and shedding of the membrane-anchored heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (pro-HB-EGF) ectodomain, as well as a rapid activation/phosphorylation of the classical survival proteins ERK, P70S6K and rS6 were induced upon sPLA2-IIA treatment. We further demonstrated that the presence of an EGFR inhibitor (AG1478), a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor (GM6001), an ADAM inhibitor (TAPI-1), and a HB-EGF neutralizing antibody abrogated the phenotype of activated microglia induced by the sPLA2-IIA.These results support the hypothesis that sPLA2-IIA may act as a potent modulator of microglial functions through its ability to induce EGFR transactivation and HB-EGF release. Accordingly, pharmacological modulation of EGFR might be a useful tool for treating neuroinflammatory diseases characterized by sPLA2-IIA accumulation.
Challenges and perspectives in using PIMS methodology to explain the success of the marketing strategy in businesses
Mosqueda Almanza, Rubén-Martín;Montaudon Tomas, Cynthia;
Contaduría y administración , 2011,
Abstract: it is assumed that an appropnate strategy will positively impact on profits and it will con tribute to the growth of the company 's market share. recent findings suggest that only the adaptation of the strategic plan elements can bring the company's performance to an optimum standard. the profit impact of market strategy (pims) is an archetype model to achieve that; but, fundamental problems remain that limit the model. this paper shows the evolution of the pims methodology that allows to reveal its challenges and its possible development. the adequate definition of the strategy, redesign of the pims questionnaire, problems of multicollinearity and the market share effect would be the most relevant problems. the results show the need to accurately define the strategy adopted by the company and the redesign of the pims survey when applied to incomplete markets. this way, the findings suggest pims econometric studies have to emphasize the relative quality proceeds variable in order to solve the thorny issue of market share effect on roi.
