Rovetto, Florencia
The tobacco gardens
Rovetto, Pedro
Colombia Médica , 2012,
Abstract: In 2008 it was closed and dismantled the spectacular Duke Gardens near Princeton University. They were created by the famous heiress Doris Duke, in honor of her father, James Buchanan Duke. This last gentleman caused 100-million deaths during the 20th century. The gardens mentioned demonstrated, perhaps trivially, what was stated by philosopher Walter Benjamin: There has never been a document of culture, which is not simultaneously one of barbarism”

EDITORIAL THE TEACHING OF MEDICINE AT UNIVERSIDAD DEL VALLE

Abstract: The first formal attempt for medical education in Valle del Cauca was in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Buga, which was part of the Colegio Académico between 1866 and 1871. It only had one graduating class of ten physicians in 1871. Its foundation was contemporaneous with the faculties of medicine at Universidad de Antioquia and Universidad del Cauca; the reasons for its prompt disappearance are unknown. The professional training concerns of the región were maintained through the creation of the Sociedad de Medicina del Cauca (Cauca Medical Society) in 1887, which gave rise to the Boletín de Medicina del Cauca (Cauca Medical Newsletter) (1887-1910) which published the works of Evaristo García and his partners Daniel Quijano Wallis, Pedro Pablo Scarpetta, Agustín Escobar, Enrique Garcés, Adolfo Tenorio, and Pablo García Aguilera, among others. The need to create a school of medicine in Cali was aired since the 1940s among trade groups at the Colegio Médico del Valle (Valle Medical School), although some thought that the warm climate in Cali was not suitable for intellectual development because such required cold environments like those in the Cundinamarca and Boyacá plateau. History managed to reveal how wrong these believers of geographical determinism were. The Humphreys Mission, commissioned by the National Government in 1948, delivered a bleak report (1950) on medical education in Colombia suggesting the creation of new medical faculties, among them one in Valle del Cauca.Guillermo Orozco, a physician from Anserma and living in Cali, with support from the Colegio Médico del Valle, managed to get the Governor, physician Antonio Lizarazo, to expedite Decree 641 of 1950, ordering the creation of a faculty of medicine affiliated to the recently created Universidad del Valle. The University had been founded in 1945 with the name of Universidad Industrial del Valle del Cauca; the name was changed in 1954 to Universidad del Valle when the Dean of Medicine, Dr. Velásquez, was designated Departmental Secretary of Education.

Enfoques , 2012,
Abstract: abstract the analysis of mass media from a gender perspective gives proposals for enriching the open discussion and shows how the problem of gender discrimination has not yet been fully resolved. consequently, this gap is also evident when we analyze the biased portrayal of women's work on the press. the researches that we have carried out proof that the problem of the media explanations is the result of adopting one specific approach that reproduce the hegemonic andocentric model. this model has been constructed by defining in positive/negative "the others" regarding different social divisions.
Nutrición y enfermedad renal

Colombia Médica , 2007,
Abstract: kidney plays an important roll in body homeostasis through excretory, metabolic and endocrine functions. kidneys filter fluids and solutes and reabsorbed water , electrolytes an minerals. urine volume and solute excretion are adjusted to keep composition of the extracellular space, serum osmolarity and intravascular volume in constant balance. kidneys also regulate acid base equilibrium, hormone metabolism and excretion and amino acid concentration. vitamin d hydroxylation takes place in the kidney, this is the active form of this vitamin, which inhibits pth. in addition they produce erythropoietin which control hemoglobin concentration in erythrocytes. when renal insufficiency develops, and glormerular filtration rate is between 50 to 75% of normal, this functions are decreased .when renal function is less than 10%, this functions ceased. in children small changes in water, solute, acid base, calcium and phosphorus can alter normal growth and development. if kidneys can not maintain internal equilibrium, specific nutrients should be used. compensation should be done according to age, type or renal disease and level of glomerular filtration rate.
Intoxicated children at an intensive care unit: popular medicine risks, complications and costs
Consuelo de Rovetto,Sandra Concha
Colombia Médica , 2009,
Abstract: Introduction: The Hospital Universitario del Valle (HUV) at the Pediatrics Intensive Care Unit (PICU) admits intoxicated patients, erroneously medicated by teguas or family members with serious aggravation of basic diseases or generating severe intoxications. Absent reports of these practices in Colombia motivated the publication of this case seriesObjective: To report a series of pediatric intoxication cases secondary to oral or dermatological application of varied substances by healers ( teguas ) or family members, leading to admission at the PICU, and to describe complications and hospital costs of these events.Methodology: Clinical charts of patients admitted to the PICU with diagnosis of exogenous intoxication during May 2001 to September 2004, were reviewed. Of 28 registered cases during that time, only 14 clinical charts were recovered. Variables evaluated included: age, gender, proceeding, administered substance, person responsible for the administration, complications, days of mechanical ventilation, total days at the intensive care unit and average costs. Of the 14 medical records with exogenous intoxications only 5 cases were involuntary and 9 were related to the administration of substances by quacks or family members; these are the ones reported in this series. Results: We report a total of 9 intoxicated patients, 5 girls and 4 boys, with an age range from 1 to 24 months, all from Cali. Topical administered substances: alcohol 6/9, vinegar 1/9; oral: aspirin 2/9, paico 1/9, and unidentified herbs 1/9. Administered substances by teguas: 6 patients; 3 by family members. All patients had metabolic acidosis with an increased anion gap: 27 in average (range from 21 to 32). All required mechanical ventilation (2 to 32 day range). Average hospital day costs were $6’657,800 pesos (around U$3,000.oo). Three patients died and 4 presented acute renal failure, 2 convulsions, 2 nosocomial infections, 1 subglotic stenosis. Conclusions and recommendations: Those practices are a high risk for children and have high health costs. Mortality and severe complications are high. Educational campaigns should be started in the community to prevent these cases.
