Oliveira, Beatriz Rosana Gon?alves de;Schneider, Jacó Fernando;Rizzotto, Maria Lucia Frizon;Rodrigues, Rosa Maria;
Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71672003000400011
Abstract: this work presents the results of an experience which aimed primarily at the evaluation of the political-pedagogical project - ppp of the nursing undergraduate program from unioeste (cascavel town campus) and at pondering on a new curricular proposal for that program. thus, a research project was designed to be used by all professors teaching that program, with the participation of students, former students, and professionals working on the health care delivery network, where field work can be carried out through practical activities and training periods for the students. the data gathered by them have been used as subsidies for a proposal to build a new political-pedagogical project, that was took effect in the year 2003. besides designing a new pedagogical proposal, strategies for a continued evaluation of the ppp implantation process have been defined.this evaluation is to be performed at the end of each term.

Abstract: this paper reports on the theoretical-methodological course of the evaluation of psychosocial care centers in southern brazil, developed starting from fourth-generation evaluation. the data collection was carried out through observations and interviews among users, family members and the team. the first stage in the analysis took place alongside data collection, thereby allowing the results to be presented to the study subjects at the end of data collection, in negotiation workshops. in the second stage, workshops were held with the researchers, with the aim of constructing a collective data analysis process. among the contributions towards fourth-generation evaluation, we highlight its participative nature and formative dimension. this makes it possible for interest groups to have better-qualified capacity for data analysis and intervention, to improve the service. as a limitation, we highlight the great volume of data obtained in the process and the need to prioritize questions through negotiation with interest groups.
Can Purified Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Supplementation Act Blood Pressure Levels in Untreated Normal-High Blood Pressure Subjects with Hypertriglyceridemia?  [PDF]
Maria Leonarda De Rosa
Pharmacology & Pharmacy (PP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/pp.2012.32031
Abstract: Omega-3 (ω-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from fish and fish oils appear to protect against coronary heart disease: their dietary intake is in fact inversely associated with cardiovascular disease morbidity/mortality in population studies. Recent evidence suggests that at least a part of this protective effect is mediated by a relatively small but significant decrease in blood pressure (BP) level. In fact, omega-3 PUFAs exhibit wide-ranging biological actions that include regulating both vasomotor tone and renal sodium excretion, partly competing with omega-6 PUFAs for common metabolic enzymes and thereby decreasing the production of vasoconstrictor rather than vasodilator and anti-inflammatory eicosanoids. PUFAs also reduce angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity, angiotensin II formation. We retrospectively evaluated the long-term effect of a omega-3 PUFAs supplementation on the blood pressure level of 91 hypertriglyceridemic subjects with untreated normal-high blood pressure that were prescribed a 3 grams omega-3 PUFAs supplementation in order to improve their plasma lipid pattern. After 24 months of treatment, systolic blood pressure (SBP) meanly decreased by 2.6 +/- 2.5 mmHg (p = 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) by 1.4 +/- 3.1 mmHg (p < 0.001), while basal heart rate decreased by 4.1 +/- 4.6 bpm (p < 0.001). Both SBP and DBP reduction were significantly related to the baseline SBP (p < 0.001) and DBP (p < 0.001), respectively. Diastolic blood pressure change was also inversely related to the patient’s age (p = 0.004). No significant difference was perceived in the metabolic syndrome subgroup. In our retrospective study, highly purified omega-3 PUFAs long-term supplementation is associated with a significant reduction in SBP, DBP, and basal heart rate in hypertriglyceridemic patients with normal-high blood pressure. The main determinants of the omega-3 PUFAs anti-hypertensive effect appear to be the basal blood pressure level and age. Future research will clarify if omega-3 PUFAs supplementation could improve the antihypertensive action of specific blood pressure lowering drug classes and of statins.
Peri-implantitis and periodontitis: Use of bacteriological test in dental practice  [PDF]
Francesco Carinci, Rosa Maria Gaudio
Forensic Medicine and Anatomy Research (FMAR) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/fmar.2013.13010
Abstract: Peri-implantitis has been defined as an inflamematory condition involving dental implants, surrounding mucosa and bone, which lose supporting bone. Although high success rates for endosseous implants have been reported, failures occur, and some implants are lost or removed. At least 10% of the failures have been suggested to be the result of peri-implantitis. One of the major causes of the peri-implantitis is the bacterial colonization of implant surfaces but additional risk factors such as periodontitis, poor oral hygiene, tobacco consumption, prepost operative therapies and genetic susceptibility should be considered. In the present study a real-time PCR bases assay was designed to detect and quantify red complex species, then used to investigate 307 periodontal pocket samples from 127 periodontitis patients and 180 controls. Results demonstrated a significant higher prevalence of red complex species and increased amount of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticolain periodontal pocket of periodontitis. Since a higher risk of peri-implantitis occurs in periodontally affected patients, detection and treatment of bacteria is a fundamental objective to ensure dental implant survival.
Reflexión sobre los modelos para el estudio de los brotes de rabia humana por murciélago
Schneider, Maria Cristina;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1995000200013
Abstract: this paper analyzes which of the possible public health models could contribute to an understanding of human rabies outbreaks transmitted by bats. first, we present a short review of the most common pertinent models. second, we present an investigation of a human rabies outbreak transmitted by bats based on the socio-epidemiological model. the same outbreak is analyzed again using the complex system theory as a theoretical framework, as both a theoretical-practical exercise seeking an approximation to this theory and a model to study this problem.

PhenoTimer: Software for the Visual Mapping of Time-Resolved Phenotypic Landscapes
Maria Secrier, Reinhard Schneider
PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0072361
Abstract: Timing common and specific modulators of disease progression is crucial for treatment, but the understanding of the underlying complex system of interactions is limited. While attempts at elucidating this experimentally have produced enormous amounts of phenotypic data, tools that are able to visualize and analyze them are scarce and the insight obtained from the data is often unsatisfactory. Linking and visualizing processes from genes to phenotypes and back, in a temporal context, remains a challenge in systems biology. We introduce PhenoTimer, a 2D/3D visualization tool for the mapping of time-resolved phenotypic links in a genetic context. It uses a novel visualization approach for relations between morphological defects, pathways or diseases, to enable fast pattern discovery and hypothesis generation. We illustrate its capabilities of tracing dynamic motifs on cell cycle datasets that explore the phenotypic order of events upon perturbations of the system, transcriptional activity programs and their connection to disease. By using this tool we are able to fine-grain regulatory programs for individual time points of the cell cycle and better understand which patterns arise when these programs fail. We also illustrate a way to identify common mechanisms of misregulation in diseases and drug abuse.
