Abstract: INTRODUCCIóN: el uso prolongado de insecticidas ha conducido al desarrollo de resistencia en diferentes especies de mosquitos incluido el Aedes aegypti, aunque hasta el momento no existen reportes de resistencia a Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis. OBJETIVOS: evaluar la resistencia a Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis en poblaciones de Aedes aegypti provenientes de sitios donde se ha aplicado la formulación líquida Bactivec (Labiofam) y en cepas de laboratorio bajo presión de selección. MéTODOS: se realizaron colectas de larvas en 3 municipios de Ciudad de La Habana y se establecieron las colonias de Aedes aegypti en el laboratorio, las cuales se compararon en susceptibilidad a Bacillus thuringiensis con la cepa de referencia Rockefeller. El experimento de selección se realizó exponiendo generaciones sucesivas de una cepa susceptible a la dosis letal 90 del biolarvicida. RESULTADOS: el índice de resistencia 50 para las cepas de los municipios Plaza, Cerro y Boyeros fue de 1,07, 0,66 y 0,81, respectivamente, por lo cual pueden considerarse susceptibles. La cepa expuesta a intensa presión de selección con el biolarvicida mostró índices de resistencia 50 y 95 de 2,7 y 4,6, respectivamente. La menor pendiente de la línea de regresión correspondió a la cepa bajo selección, lo que indica mayor variabilidad genética de esta población. CONCLUSIONES: estos resultados justifican la utilización de Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis como una alternativa para el control de estadios inmaduros de Aedes aegypti sin que exista evidencia hasta el presente de aparición de resistencia en poblaciones de campo, pero deben trazarse estrategias de manejo adecuadas ante la potencialidad del vector de adquirirla. Characterization of Bacillus thuringiensis soil isolates from Cuba, with insecticidal activity against mosquitoes

Abstract: chemical insecticides may be toxic and cause environmental degradation. consequently, biological control for insects represents an alternative with low ecological impact. in this work, three soil isolates (a21, a51 and c17) from different regions of the cuban archipelago were identified, characterized and evaluated against aedes aegypti and culex quinquefasciatus. the new isolates were compared with reference ips82 strain and two strains isolated from biolarvicides bactivec and bactoculicida, respectively. the differentiation was done by morphological, biochemical, bioassays activity and molecular methods (sds-page, plasmid profile and random amplified polymorphic analysis). all isolates were identified as bacillus thuringiensis. the a21, a51 and c17 isolates showed higher larvicide activity than bactivec’s isolated reference strain, against both a. aegypti and c. quinquefasciatus. a21 isolate had a protein profile similar to ips82 and bactivec strain. a51 and c17 isolates produced a characteristic proteins pattern. a21 and a51 isolates had plasmid patterns similar to ips82 standard strain, while c17 isolate had different both plasmid profile and protein bands. all the studied isolates showed a diverse rapd patterns and were different from the strains previously used in biological control in cuba. rev. biol. trop. 59 (3): 1007-1016. epub 2011 september 01.

Actividad insecticida de aceites esenciales de plantas en larvas de Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae)

Abstract: introduction: the search for new alternatives and environmentally-friendly compounds that generate minimal resistance such as natural products and metabolites of vegetal origin constitutes an important research line included in the comprehensive management of plagues and vectors. objective: to evaluate the insecticidal activity of essential oils from curcuma longa, melaleuca leucadendron, artemisia abrotanum against aedes aegypti mosquitoes. methods: an aedes aegypti reference strain, susceptible to insecticides and stabilized at the laboratory, was used for the bioassays. it was known as rockefeller. the bioassays were performed following the who methodology. results: dosing and mortality indexes were obtained for the three essential oils. for curcuma longa oil, lc50= 0.0025 (lethal concentration that causes 50 % mortality), lc95= 0.0044 % (lethal concentration that causes 95 % mortality) and regression line y= 5.56 + 6.60x. for melaleuca leucadendron oil, lc50= 0.0041 %, lc95= 0.0051 % and the regression line was y= 5.20 + 13.90x. artemisia abrotamun oil showed lc50= 0.0193 %, lc95m= 0.0272 % and the regression line was y= 5.22 + 11.19x. conclusions: this study verified the insecticidal action of these oils on aedes aegypti larvae and recommended diagnosis doses of 113 mg/l= 0.0113 % for curcuma longa, 120 mg/l= 0.0120 % for melaleuca leucadendron, and 620mg/l= 0.062 % for artemisia abrotamum.
Classical and nonclassical symmetries of a generalized Boussinesq equation

Abstract: We apply the Lie-group formalism and the nonclassical method due to Bluman and Cole to deduce symmetries of the generalized Boussinesq equation, which has the classical Boussinesq equation as an special case. We study the class of functions $f(u)$ for which this equation admit either the classical or the nonclassical method. The reductions obtained are derived. Some new exact solutions can be derived.

Abstract: introduction: it is necessary the study of the extremely severe maternal morbidity (esmm) to complement the researches on maternal mortality, as well as the epidemiologic surveillance of these cases as a strategy for actions proposed by paho/ hwo in millennium summit to decrease the maternal mortality in 2015. objectives: to update and to incorporate the new concept of esmm in our daily practice. methods: a national and international review on this subject. a detailed analysis of the research on esmm in selected latin american institutions in 2008. the value of nee indicators related to these affections is explored. results: in our environment authors analyzed the features preventing the appropriate identification of cases and its timely treatment. conclusions: a proposal of solutions is carried out for the work os specialist charged of severe patients care and also on the organization features in our institutions.

Abstract: Introducción: es necesario el estudio y análisis de la morbilidad materna extremadamente grave (MMEG) para complementar las investigaciones sobre mortalidad materna, así como la vigilancia epidemiológica de estos casos, como estrategia para las acciones propuestas por OPS/OMS en la Cumbre del Milenio, para la disminución de la mortalidad materna en el 2015. Objetivos: actualizar e incorporar el nuevo concepto de MMEG en nuestra actividad cotidiana, en el manejo de casos con morbilidad obstétrica muy severa. Métodos: revisión de bibliografía internacional y nacional sobre el tema. Análisis detallado de la investigación sobre MMEG en instituciones seleccionadas de América Latina en el 2008. Se explora el valor de nuevos indicadores relacionados con estas afecciones. Resultados: se analizaron en nuestro medio, aspectos que impiden la correcta identificación de los casos y su oportuno tratamiento. Conclusiones: se realiza una propuesta de soluciones para el trabajo de especialistas dedicados a la atención a pacientes graves y también en los aspectos organizativos en nuestras instituciones.
