Intestinal Parasitic Infections among Pregnant Women in Venezuela

Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology , 2006,
Abstract: Introduction. Intestinal parasitic infections, especially due to helminths, increase anemia in pregnant women. The results of this are low pregnancy weight gain and IUGR, followed by LBW, with its associated greater risks of infection and higher perinatal mortality rates. For these reasons, in the setting of no large previous studies in Venezuela about this problem, a national multicentric study was conducted. Methods. Pregnant women from nine states were studied, a prenatal evaluation with a coproparasitological study. Univariated and multivariated analyses were made to determine risk factors for intestinal parasitosis and related anemia. Results. During 19 months, 1038 pregnant women were included and evaluated. Intestinal parasitosis was evidenced in 73.9%: A lumbricoides 57.0%, T trichiura 36.0%, G lamblia 14.1%, E hystolitica 12.0%, N americanus 8.1%, E vermicularis 6.3%, S stercoralis 3.3%. Relative risk for anemia in those women with intestinal parasitosis was 2.56 ( P<.01 ). Discussion. Intestinal parasitoses could be associated with conditions for development of anemia at pregnancy. These features reflect the need of routine coproparasitological study among pregnant women in rural and endemic zones for intestinal parasites. Further therapeutic and prophylactic protocols are needed. Additional research on pregnant intestinal parasitic infection impact on newborn health is also considered.

Abstract: introduction: medulloblastomas are malignant, invasive and highly cellular tumours from the cerebellum, rarely seen in adults. we describe the experience in the treatment of this entity in our institution. materials and methods: a retrospective study was made including 11 adult patients with medulloblastomas confined to the craniospinal axis treated between 1984-2010. clinical, radiological and therapeutic data were assessed during the evolution of this entity. results: mean age of patients was 30,2 years (9 women/2 men). over 80% of the patients presented intracranial hypertension, while 54,5% presented cerebellum syndrome. gross total surgical resection was achieved in 8 patients (72,7%) and subtotal resection in the other 3 (27,3%). all patients received craniospinal radiotherapy. after primary surgical resection, 6 patients received chemotherapy with cisplatin (cddp) and etoposide (vp-16). during the follow up period and after a median time of 35,2 months, 4 patients (36,4%) presented with relapse, mainly in the posterior cranial fossa, managed in the majority of cases with surgical resection plus additional chemotherapy. mean survival time was 100,3 months with a 5-and 8-year overall survival rate of 84 and 56% respectively. conclusions: in the treatment of this malignancy, gross surgical resection has a crucial role, followed as soon as possible by oncological therapy, specially radiotherapy and chemotherapy if needed.

Clusters in Macroscopic Traffic Flow Models  [PDF]
Rosa María Velasco, Patricia Saavedra
World Journal of Mechanics (WJM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/wjm.2012.21007
Abstract: This paper concerns the traveling wave formation in macroscopic traffic flow models. The dynamics involved in this problem is described following a close analogy to compressible fluid dynamics. It is well known that vehicle clusters appear along a highway when the homogenous steady state taken as a reference is linearly unstable. The cluster properties are determined in an approximate way in terms of the parameters proper to each model and are compared between them.
An Alternative Manifold for Cosmology Using Seifert Fibered and Hyperbolic Spaces  [PDF]

Applied Mathematics (AM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/am.2014.56096
Abstract:

We propose a model with 3-dimensional spatial sections, constructed from hyperbolic cusp space glued to Seifert manifolds which are in this case homology spheres. The topological part of this research is based on Thurston’s conjecture which states that any 3-dimensional manifold has a canonical decomposition into parts, each of which has a particular geometric structure. In our case, each part is either a Seifert fibered or a cusp hyperbolic space. In our construction we remove tubular neighbourhoods of singular orbits in areas of Seifert fibered manifolds using a splice operation and replace each with a cusp hyperbolic space. We thus achieve elimination of all singularities, which appear in the standard-like cosmological models, replacing them by “a torus to infinity”. From this construction, we propose an alternative manifold for cosmology with finite volume and without Friedmann-like singularities. This manifold was used for calculating coupling constants. Obtaining in this way a theoretical explanation for fundamental forces is at least in the sense of the hierarchy.

Abstract: evidently, teachers need to be readers and writers so they can promote these processes in their students. therefore, this study aims to promote the education of a group of teachers in basic education as users of the written language through revising, reflecting and transformation of these processes. such study is oriented under the qualitative approach with a research-action design, using non-structured interviews and the analysis of written documents as techniques. it was developed during the 2006-2007 school year, obtaining these results from the teachers: reflecting on their reading and writing processes, promoting the knowledge of their process as readers and writers, participating in an environment that allows the contact with various written material, promoting cooperative work with their peers and developing a personal didactic. in conclusion, they were able to evolve in their experience with reading and writing.

Abstract: with the objective to stimulate the use of irrigation and the electric energy fee reduction during night time program granted by the 2004 federal law, the government of the state of paraná, brazil launched the night irrigation program - npi. beyond this discount, the farmer that adheres to npi will get additional benefits, as completion of the electric grid without cost, subsidized financing of equipment, technical assistance, support with environmental farm compliance, and the possibility of replacing the entire pump energy matrix. as part of the npi strategy of action, installation of learning centers for irrigation technology was planned in agricultural schools, thus contributing both to improve technical professional training in agriculture, and for the dissemination of knowledge in irrigated agriculture, in order to increase agricultural productivity.
