Virtual Reality Technology Applied on Maintenance of Painted Walls of Buildings  [PDF]
Alcínia Z. Sampaio, Daniel Rosário
Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2012.55035
Abstract: In a building, the paint coating applied to interior walls conveys their aesthetic character and also performs an important function of protection. It is a construction component which is exposed to agents of deterioration related to its use, needing the regular evaluation of its state of repair. The completed model supports the performance of such periodic inspections and the monitoring of interior wall maintenance, using Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Used during an inspection visit, the application allows users to consult a database of irregularities, normally associated with paint coating, classified by the most probable causes and by recommended repair methodologies. In addition, with this model, a chromatic scale related to the degree of deterioration of the coating, defined as a function of the time between the dates of the application of the paint and the scheduled repainting, can be attributed to each element of coating monitored. This use of VR technology allows inspections and the evaluation of the degree of wear and tear of materials to be carried out in a highly direct and intuitive manner. The computer application has a positive contribution to make in the field of construction, using as it does Information Technology (IT) tools which give access to innovative technology with it capacity for interaction and visualization.
Logistic Regression Modelling for Complex Survey Data with an Application for Bed Net Use in Mozambique  [PDF]
Sheyla Rodrigues Cassy, Isabel Natário, M. Rosário Martins
Open Journal of Statistics (OJS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojs.2016.65074
Abstract: Logistic Regression Models have been widely used in many areas of research, namely in health sciences, to study risk factors associated to diseases. Many population based surveys, such as Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), are constructed assuming complex sampling, i.e., probabilistic, stratified and multistage sampling, with unequal weights in the observations; this complex design must be taken into account in order to have reliable results. However, this very relevant issue usually is not well analyzed in the literature. The aim of the study is to specify the logistic regression model with complex sample design, and to demonstrate how to estimate it using the R software survey package. More specifically, we used Mozambique Demographic Health and Survey data 2011 (MDHS 2011) to illustrate how to correct for the effect of sample design in the particular case of estimating the risk factors associated to the probability of using mosquito bed nets. Our results show that in the presence of complex sampling, appropriate methods must be used both in descriptive and inferential statistics.
Padr?es de vida na velhice
Mauritti,Rosário;
Análise Social , 2004,
Abstract: the exponential growth of the older population, which is associated with the lowering of fertility and birth rates and with the dispersal or even disintegration of family networks, has made the categories of ?the old? and the retired one of the focal points of family issue-related sociological analysis. these trends have also become increasingly visible by virtue of their impact on the sustainability of health and social security systems. this article seeks to outline a typology of living standards for various segments of the elderly. the underlying analytical model takes into account descriptive elements relating both to individuals (in terms of socio-occupational and socio-educational variables) and to families (in particular in terms of consumption patterns).
Padr?es de vida dos estudantes universitários nos processos de transi??o para a vida adulta
Mauritti,Rosário;
Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas , 2002,
Abstract: this article seeks to determine the influence social origins have on higher education paths. the author analyses the extent to which people from different social backgrounds (in terms of socio-professional and socio-educational variables) enjoy different probabilities of gaining access to higher education. she then goes on to characterise the conditions under which and the ways in which today?s undergraduates live. this perspective arises out of the notion of the existence of a "transition to adult life" and seeks to observe the various components of this process, especially those concerning scholastic/academic, vocational and family transitions. a third section analyses students? aspirations and expectations in terms of their future professional insertion. it highlights both the elements that are common to all their representations and the areas in which they differ - the latter being reflected in their different aspirations and expectations.
Anota??es metodológicas e operacionais num olhar de compara??o internacional
Mauritti,Rosário;
Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas , 2008,
Abstract: this paper reflects on the paths and options taken in a piece of research that analyses the phenomena of social change and the appearance of new lifestyles, taking the phenomenon of living alone as the empirical point of reference, from a comparative perspective on a european scale.
DETERMINISM VERSUS PREDICTABILITY IN THE CONTEXT OF POINCARE’S WORK ON THE RESTRICTED 3-BODY PROBLEM1
Rosário Laureano
Academic Research International , 2012,
Abstract: It is exposed the Poincare’s work (1880's) in the system defining the restricted 3-body problem which led to the discovery of a special kind of behavior – the dynamical instability. Contrary to the widespread belief that the Deterministic Chaos Theory began with the computational work of Lorenz (1960's), the Poincare's theoretical research was sufficiently clear about the existence of chaotic deterministic behavior. Until the time of Poincare, there was a tacit assumption that the uncertainty in the output does not arise from any randomness in the dynamical laws, since they are completely deterministic, but rather from the lack of the infinite accuracy in the initial conditions. In this paper it is emphasized that the issues of determinism and predictability are distinct.
