Reflections on Behavioral Crises Prevention and Intervention in Special Education Schools in the United States
Roland Paulauskas
Journal of Special Education and Rehabilitation , 2011, DOI: 10.2478/v10215-011-0006-6
Abstract: The development of civilization made crises an inseparable part of our lives. Crises manifest themselves in almost all social areas and organizations, including educational institutions. The goals of the article are to present a theoretical model of normal, deviant and antisocial behaviors, and discuss the psychosocial characteristics of emotionally disturbed adolescents situated in a residential special education school in the United States. The article also gives an analysis of their most prevalent behavioral crises, escalation stages, as well as nonviolent crisis prevention and intervention strategies. The methods that were used include scientific literature review, analysis of statistical information supplied from different government sources, review and analysis of student records, as well as the author's analytical reflections in working with emotionally disturbed youngsters in residential special education schools in the United States. The results of the study indicate that scientists from different fields use different terminology to describe socially nonconforming behaviors. The author presents a theoretical model of normal, deviant and antisocial behavior that could enhance better understanding and identification of high risk situations and conduct leading to serious crises. The analysis of student records revealed that most of the adolescents situated in special education residential schools are diagnosed with a number of mental health problems. This suggests that the currently prevailing care and education paradigm in the special education residential schools should shift to a more comprehensive treatment paradigm. The article also discusses the pros and cons of nonviolent crisis intervention. It is the author's opinion that all special education schools serving children with emotional disorders should adopt one of the nonviolent crisis intervention models and develop and implement crisis management policies, plans and procedures.
Is Causal Attribution of Sexual Deviance the Source of Thinking Errors?
Roland Paulauskas
International Education Studies , 2013, DOI: 10.5539/ies.v6n4p20
Abstract: Adult and juvenile offenders exhibit a number of cognitive distortions related to sexually offending behaviors. The latter may be attributed to their developmental deficiencies, the result of operant conditioning, psychological self-defense mechanisms and biases, influence of negative environmental factors or criminal subculture. A group of juvenile sex offenders and non-offenders were administered the Causal Attribution of Sexual Deviance Questionnaire (CASDQ). It was found that both populations interpret sexual deviance as a multi-causal phenomenon; however juvenile sex offenders are more likely to externalize its causes as compared to their pro-social peers. The paper discusses the construct of sexual deviance, different etiological theories of sexually aberrant behaviors and explores the relationship between causal attributions and thinking errors as they relate to sexually offending behaviors. It is hypothesized that misinterpretation of the causality of sexual deviance may be the source of cognitive distortions and serve as an internal reinforcer of sexual violence.

Journal of Water Resource and Protection (JWARP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jwarp.2014.62016
Abstract:

The description of a microbiological community of drinking water distribution systems is intended for a safe and proper use of drinking water. These studies were aimed at characterising the microbial condition of the drinking water supply system in Lithuania by means of culture-based methods and biochemical techniques. Samples of drinking water (in cities supplied in centralised way from taps, wells, and boreholes) were collected in different locations in Lithuania. Seeking to grow microflora present in water the membrane filtration method was applied to study the samples. Most often water samples were studied to identify coliform bacteria (Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Serratia spp.), Escherichia coli (or faecal coliform), Enterococci (or fecal Streptococcus), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (other non-fermentative gram-negative bacteria) according to the international ISO standards. Large amounts of non-fermenting gram-negative bacteria were found in centralised urban water. The investigation showed that more than 50% of the wells under study had increased microbial contamination with faecal coliform bacteria and faecal Streptococcus. Bacteria of the Pseudomonas group, CDC group and other non-fermentative gram-negative bacteria were detected in more than 30% samples of centralised urban water studied.

On $α$-covariance, long, short and negative memories for sequences of random variables with infinite variance
Vygantas Paulauskas
Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: We consider a measure of dependence for symmetric $\alpha$-stable random vectors, which was introduced by the author in 1976. We demonstrate that this measure of dependence can be extended for much more broad class of random vectors (up to regularly varying vectors in separable Banach spaces). This measure is applied for linear random processes and fields with heavy-tailed innovations, for some stable processes, and these applications show that this dependence measure, named as $\alpha$-covariance is a good substitute for the usual covariance. Also we discuss a problem of defining long, short, and negative memories for stationary processes and fields with infinite variances.
On small balls problem for stable measures in a Hilbert space
Vygantas Paulauskas
Mathematics , 2009,
Abstract: In the paper the old results on probabilities of small balls for stable measures in a Hilbert space, obtained in 1977 and remaining unpublished, are presented. Apart of historical value these results are interesting even now, since they are comparable with recently obtained ones.
On the asymptotic of convex hulls of Gaussian fields
Youri Davydov,Vigantas Paulauskas
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: We consider a Gaussian field $X = \{X_t, t \in T\}$ with values in a Banach space $B$ defined on a parametric set $T$ equal to $R^m$ or $Z^m.$ It is supposed that the distribution $\cal P$ of $X_t$ is independent of $t.$ We consider the asymptotic behavior of closed convex hulls $$ W_n = \conv \{X_t, t \in T_n\} $$ where $(T_n)$ is an increasing sequence of subsets of $T$ and we show that under some conditions of the weak dependence with probability 1 $$ \lim_{n\rightarrow \infty} \frac{1}{b_n}\,W_n = {\cal E} $$ (in the sense of Hausdorff distance), where the limit shape ${\cal E}$ is the concentration ellipsoid of $\cal P.$ The asymptotic behavior of the mathematical expectations $Ef(W_n),$ where $f$ is an homogeneous function is also studied.
Once more on comparison of tail index estimators

Abstract: We consider heavy-tailed distributions and compare the well-known estimators of the tail index, based on extreme value theory with a comparatively recent estimator based on a different idea.
Several new tail index estimators
Vygantas Paulauskas,Marijus Vai?iulis
Statistics , 2015,
Abstract: In the paper we propose some new class of functions which is used to construct tail index estimators. Functions from this new class is non-monotone in general, but presents a product of two monotone functions: the power function and the logarithmic function, which plays essential role in the classical Hill estimator. Introduced new estimators have better asymptotic performance comparing with the Hill estimator and other popular estimators over all range of the parameters present in the second order regular variation condition. Asymptotic normality of the introduced estimators is proved, and comparison (using asymptotic mean square error) with other estimators of the tail index is provided. Some preliminary simulation results are presented.

Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1751-0147-51-47
Abstract: For detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum a 77-bp fragment in the msp2 gene was used. Detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato was performed using the FL6 and FL7 primers according to sequences of conserved regions of the fla gene. The OspA gene located on the linear 49-kb plasmid was used as target in multiplex PCR for genotyping. Genospecies-specific primers were used in the PCR for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. afzelii and B. garinii.Infection rates with Borrelia spp. were significantly lower at Fjell?yv?r and Str?m compared to Tjore and Hinnebu; Fjell?yv?r vs. Tjore (χ2 = 20.27, p < 0.0001); Fjell?yv?r vs. Hinnebu (χ2 = 24.04, p < 0.0001); Str?m vs. Tjore (χ2 = 11.47, p = 0.0007) and Str?m vs. Hinnebu (χ2 = 16.63, p < 0.0001). The Borrelia genospecies were dominated by. B. afzelii (82%) followed by B. garinii (9.7%) and B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (6.9%). B. burgdorferi s.s. was only found on the island of Jomfruland. The infection rate of Anaplasma phagocytophilum showed the following figures; Fjell?yv?r vs Hinnebu (χ2 = 16.27, p = 0.0001); Str?m vs. Tjore (χ2 = 13.16, p = 0.0003); Str?m vs. Hinnebu (χ2 = 34.71, p < 0.0001); Fjell?yv?r vs. Tjore (χ2 = 3.19, p = 0.0742) and Fjell?yv?r vs. St?m (χ2 = 5.06, p = 0.0245). Wild cervids may serve as a reservoir for A. phagocytophilum. Jomfruland, with no wild cervids but high levels of migrating birds and rodents, harboured both B. burgdorferi s.l. and A. phagocytophilum in questing I. ricinus ticks. Birds and rodents may play an important role in maintaining the pathogens on Jomfruland. The high abundance of roe deer and red deer on the Norwegian islands of Fjell?yv?r and Str?m may reduce the infection rate of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in host seeking Ixodes ricinus, in contrast to mainland sites at Hinnebu and Tjore with moderate abundance of wild cervids. The infection rate of Anaplasma phagocytophilum showed the opposite result with a high prevalence in questing ticks in localities with a high
