Abstract: objective: to assess the exposure to lead in children living in various types of contaminated sites. materials and methods: the study was conducted from june 2008 to december 2009 at four sites in mexico: avalos metallurgical, chihuahua; morales metallurgical, san luis potosí (slp); trinidad pottery area, tlaxcala and cedral mine site, slp. these sites contain different sources of lead. the metal levels were quantified in outdoor dust and in peripheral blood of children. results: lead dust concentrations exceed the national guidelines for residential soils (400 mg/kg) in a range of values for the four sites from 62 to 5 187 mg/kg. regarding biological monitoring, the studied children showed maximum lead blood levels of 22 μg/dl in cedral, 31 μg/dl in morales, 32 μg/dl in avalos, and 52 μg/dl in trinidad. it is important to mention that in all the studied sites, a significative positive correlation was found between blood lead levels and the lead concentrations in dust. conclusion: these sites are an example of the health risks related to lead exposure in mexico; therefore, there is an urgent need for a national public health program aimed at reducing lead exposure in vulnerable populations.
Escobar, Rogelio;
Revista mexicana de análisis de la conducta , 2011, DOI: 10.5514/rmac.v37.i2.26139
Abstract: the resistance to extinction of observing behavior was determined by removing the primary reinforcer and presenting only a stimulus associated with reinforcement (s+), only a stimulus associated with extinction (s-), and only a neutral stimulus. in three training conditions of 30 sessions each, lever pressing by rats was reinforced on a mixed random ratio 50 extinction. each press on a second lever (observing) produced for 5 s an s+ during the reinforcement component and an s- during extinction. after each training condition, rats were exposed to 10 sessions of extinction in which the mixed schedule was discontinued. in each of the three successive extinction conditions, each press on the observing lever produced only the s+, only the s-, or only the neutral stimulus. the order of exposure was different for each rat. presenting the s+ increased and presenting the s- decreased resistance to extinction relative to the neutral stimulus. these findings suggest that the concept of conditioned reinforcement is still a necessary one in behavior analysis.
Effects of the Contiguity Between the Extinction and the Reinforcement Components in Observing-response Procedures
Escobar, Rogelio;Bruner, Carlos A.;
Revista mexicana de análisis de la conducta , 2008,
Abstract: the role of the stimulus correlated with extinction (s-) in observing-response procedures has been ambiguous. although the s- is associated with extinction, some studies demonstrated that it effectively sustained observing behavior. to explore the conditions responsible for the s- to function as a conditioned reinforcer, the present experiment showed whether observing responses during an extinction component are controlled by the temporal contiguity between s- presentation and the reinforcement component. presses on one lever were reinforced on a mixed schedule of reinforcement random-interval extinction. pressing a second lever resulted in 5-s stimuli correlated with the components of the mixed schedule. for one group of three rats after observing responses were established, a no-consequence interval (nci) was added between the end of the extinction component and the beginning of the reinforcement component. for other three rats the nci was added between the end of the reinforcement component and the beginning of the extinction component. observing responses during the extinction component decreased only when the nci was added at the end of the extinction component. it was concluded that although the s- is nominally correlated with extinction it may function as a conditioned reinforcer because it is intermittently paired with the reinforcement component.
Interfaz de Bajo Costo Usando un Puerto Paralelo y Visual Basic
Escobar, Rogelio;Lattal, Kennon A.;
Revista mexicana de análisis de la conducta , 2010, DOI: 10.5514/rmac.v36.i3.01
Abstract: the design of a low-cost interface is described that uses the parallel port of a pc to control experiments that require from 1 to 8 outputs in combination with 1 to 4 inputs using the programming language visual basic? 2008 express edition that is freely distributed. this interface allows for controlling response-input consoles and experimental chambers that can be used in experiments with humans and nonhuman animals using only a computer. to facilitate the application of the interface in experiments on behavior analysis, the use of micro switches and photobeam sensors for recording responses as well as the use of devices controlled via micro relays is described.
SEX DIFFERENCES IN THE SUBJETIVE EXPERIENCE OF JEALOUSY AMONG CHILEAN YOUNG PEOPLE: A TEST

Universitas Psychologica , 2003,
Abstract: In the present study we investigated sexual assymetries in the subjective experience of jealousy amongChilean young people. The sample included a total of 241 participants (132 females and 109 males) thatanswered two forced-choice questions developed by Buss, Larsen, Westen & Semmelroth (1992), askingwether sexual or emotional infidelity would cause them the most distress. The evolutionary hypothesispredicted that men would be more distressed than women by the sexual infidelity, and that womenwould be more distressed than men by the emotional infidelity. The results support the evolutionaryprediction, providing an important tool to understand mate choice in Latin America, and are comparedto the results from other countries, analyzing some of the criticisms that have arised from socioculturalperspectives.
LA éTICA DEL DESARROLLO PROFESIONAL CONTINUADO EN LA PROMOCIóN DE LA CALIDAD ASISTENCIAL
Altisent,Rogelio;
Acta bioethica , 2010, DOI: 10.4067/S1726-569X2010000200008
Abstract: ethics has always being present in a more or less explicit way in health care quality; nevertheless, there has not been paid attention enough to the power of quality found in the ethical drive and attitudes of professionals who are leaders in improvement processes. the continuous professional development is a process which must accompany successive stages of professional life with different motivational moments and periods of crisis, for which understanding its ethical basis is convenient by reflecting about health care quality. professionals who care patients also need attention to diagnose and overcome inertia, lack of initiative, skepticism and lack of self criticism situations. health care quality can only be guarantee if professionals develop a satisfactory progress in their career, for which it is necessary that personal services and human resources of health care institutions devote their best energies in the promotion of their professionals.
Marcial, Rogelio;
La ventana. Revista de estudios de género , 2009,
Abstract: this article proposes an approach to the ways the body is represented by three different identities in the sexual diversity movement (lgbt) in guadalajara. it focuses on body representation conceptions that exaggerate the "traditional" gender attributes of the body (male and female), like the "bears" and the drag queens, and a new body conception: the "dolphins". this approach is contextualized within the construction of the homosexual identity and its main symbolic referents, and the implications of "getting out of the closet" when this happens in the adolescence.
Altez, Rogelio;
Desacatos , 2009,
Abstract: the discourse on disasters, risk and vulnerabilities, used in academic fields and the applied sciences realm, has been consolidated over the last two decades as the result of multiple efforts by different disciplines that reflect on the relationship between society and nature. the functionalist discourse has been the common epistemological matrix of this scientific platform, and its perspective covers and shares a good deal of the logic used in all scientific areas. this paper reviews the presence (not always acknowledged) of functionalism in the most representative arguments within the discourse about risk, in an attempt to generate a discussion on the epistemological and interpretative background of the academic thought that constructs and applies this discourse.
Nazar,Rogelio;
Revista signos , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-09342011000100005
Abstract: this paper presents a methodology for analyzing the evolution of the terminology used in a specialized domain. such terminology is measured according to its variation in the frequency of use, as well as the appearance and disappearance of the terms. as an example, the paper reports the results of the application of this methodology to a corpus made up of the 1983-2006 spanish association of applied linguistics proceedings. the methodology can be summarized in a quantitative and language-independent algorithm that accepts a set of text documents organized by years as input and offers a selection of terms as output by calculating their frequency distribution over time. the geometrical properties of the curves representing the frequency of use of the terminological units help to automatically identify those which come into use and those no longer in use. metaphorically, the paper offers a kind of radiology of the paradigm shifts that occur in the history of the field as well as a neology and an archeology of its terminology, revealing terms that would be otherwise hard to find due to the scale of the corpus. the specific objective of this paper is to propose an alternative to other methods which only consider curves of frequency distribution of units in the time line arbitrarily selected by a user. this paper offers a new view because it is the reverse procedure: instead of introducing lexical units to study their frequency curves, the curves to obtain the units are introduced. the usefulness of these sets of units may vary according to the needs. for instance, the creation of glossaries of different types (hard copy or electronic format) may require a nomenclature that includes only the terminology firmly established in the literature or, in other cases, neologisms or terms no longer in use.
