Abstract: Given the importance of the thymus to the immune system and the limited knowledge about its development and involution processes, this study evaluated the expression of the vascular endo-thelial growth factor, a key angiogenic factor for the formation of vascular tissue bed and modulation of functions related to cell proliferation and migration, hormone synthesis, and immunomodulation. In this study, thymus samples of dog fetuses (30, 40, 50 and 60 days old), and young (180 days old) and adult (365 days old) dogs were submitted to real-time PCR and Western blot. Time-dependent changes were observed for proteins and genes associated with the development of the vascular system, such as VEGF-A, VEGF-C, Flt-1, KDR, FLT-4, and EG-VEGF. This result demonstrates that these system components play different roles during development and involution of the thymus. Possible functions, such as the modulatory effect on vasculogenesis and microenvironment, influence the proliferation and differentiation of thymocytes, T cells maturation, cell-cell interaction and hormone secretion.

Abstract: three technologies were tested (tio2/uv, h2o2/uv, and tio2/h2o2/uv) for the degradation and color removal of a 25 mg l-1 mixture of three acid dyes: blue 9, red 18, and yellow 23. a low speed rotating disc reactor (20 rpm) and a h2o2 concentration of 2.5 mmol l-1 were used. the dyes did not significantly undergo photolysis, although they were all degraded by the studied advanced oxidation processes. with the tio2/h2o2/uv process, a strong synergism was observed (color removal reached 100%). pseudo first order kinetic constants were estimated for all processes, as well as the respective apparent photonic efficiencies.

Abstract: We consider a protocol to perform the optimal quantum state discrimination of $N$ linearly independent non-orthogonal pure quantum states and present a computational code. Through the extension of the original Hilbert space, it is possible to perform an unitary operation yielding a final configuration, which gives the best discrimination without ambiguity by means of von Neumann measurements. Our goal is to introduce a detailed general mathematical procedure to realize this task by means of semidefinite programming and norm minimization. The former is used to fix which is the best detection probability amplitude for each state of the ensemble. The latter determines the matrix which leads the states to the final configuration. In a final step, we decompose the unitary transformation in a sequence of two-level rotation matrices.

Abstract: The feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a complex disease that affects mainly the immune and hematological systems of cats. And because the thymus was closely associated with the immune system, the aim of this study was to quantify the morphological changes in the thymus of naturally infected and uninfected animals. Thymus morphological changes were evaluated by quantifying the following parameters: thymocytes, fat tissue, thymic corpuscles, connective tissue, and type I and III collagen. This study analyzed a total of seven cats, five in the negative group (Fn) and two in the positive (Fp) group. The areas occupied by thymocytes in FeLV negative (Fn) and positive (Fp) animals were, respectively, 55.16% ± 6.15% and 44.81% ± 6.15% (p = 0.39); adipocytes, 42.14% ± 5.97% (Fn) and 53.42% ± 11.3% (Fp) (p = 0.34); blood vessels, 0.85% ± 0.24% (Fn) and 1.75% ± 0.52% (Fp) (p = 0.15). Whereas thymic corpuscles occupied an area of 0.68% ± 0.19% in negative animals (Fn) only. The connective tissue covered area varied between 12.05% ± 0.68% (Fn) and 10.34% ± 0.62% (Fp) (p = 0.009). Collagen type I (p = 0.30) and type III (p = 0.59) were present in, respectively, 1.73% ± 0.3% and 0.44% ± 0.09% in Fn, and 1.44% ± 0.36 and 0.44% ± 0.13% in Fp. The FeLV virus was not able to completely modify the thymus structure of infected animals, considering the areas occupied by thymocytes, adipose tissue, blood vessels and also type I and III collagens. However, the connective tissue underwent a certain degree of remodeling since less connective tissue area was observed in FeLV infected animals. The absence of thymic corpuscles in immunosuppressed animals suggests a possible connection to thymopoiesis.

Abstract: the biological characteristics of five lineages of t. pretiosum riley (hym.: trichogrammatidae), collected from tomato crops, and reared in a. kuehniella (zeller) and s. cerealella (olivier) eggs were evaluated. the parasitism rate of the lineages, varied from 56,1 to 68.6%, when the host was a. kuehniella, being higher than for s. cerealella. the viability of all lineages, when reared in s. cerealella eggs, was superior to 90%; however, only those lineages reared in s. cerealella eggs and collected in afonso cláudio and venda nova dos imigrantes (espirito santo state, brazil) were significantly higher than those reared on a. kuehniella. the longevity of the offspring submitted to the parasitism, was higher in all the lineages reared in a. kuehniella eggs. all five lineages can be mass reared using both hosts. however, considering the parasitism rate and the quality of the progeny, the host a. kuehniella seems to be superior than s. cerealella

Abstract: this study was carried with the objective of evaluating the germination of annatto seeds and their embryonic axes development (bixa orellana l.), cultivating casca verde in in vitro culture medium with different agar concentrations. the treatments were set in a completely randomized design, with four replications, in an a x b factorial scheme where factor a consisted of annatto intact seeds (si), seeds without tegument (sst) and only embryonic axes (e) and factor b consisted of four levels of agar concentrations (4, 6, 8 and 10 g l-1) in basic medium "ms". seeds without tegument in culture medium containing 4 g l-1 agar presented a greater germination percentage. the largest percentage of normal seedlings was obtained in the development of embryonic axes in culture medium containing 10 g l-1 agar. intact seeds presented the smallest germination values and abnormal seedlings in 4 and 6 g l-1 agar. greater values of fresh and dry weight of normal seedlings occurred in the germination of seeds without tegument in culture medium with concentration of 10 g l-1 agar.

Abstract: a 21-year-old girl presents with a 15-day history of epigastric pain and vomiting. ten days later, constipation and abdominal distension followed. the patient reported similar epigastric pain and vomiting for 6 days last year. a painless epigastric 12-by-8-centimeter tumor was observed on abdominal palpation, and rectal examination revealed an extrinsic tumor compressing anterior rectal wall. upper digestive endoscopy showed a trichobezoar. upon laparotomy, one gastric and one duodenal trichobezoar were removed through an anterior gastrotomy. another one was found 40 centimeters proximal to the ileo-cecal valve and removed through a proximal ileotomy. trichobezoar is an unspecific disease, which diagnosis is made upon suspicion. early recognition of bezoars is important because morbidity and mortality rise considerably once complications occur. we illustrate this case to emphasize the need for early recognition and surgical management in order to reduce morbimortality.
