Abstract: the bacterial wilt of bean was first reported in brazil in 1995, in s?o paulo state and since then, this bacteria has also been identified in other states in brazil. the disease is caused by curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens (cff) and has become a serious problem in bean crop. the aims of this study were to evaluate the resistance of snap bean genotypes considering bacterial wilt and also to define the most accurate method to distinguish resistant and susceptible genotypes to cff. two experiments were carried out, one of them from december 2005 to february 2006, in a randomized block design, six replications and 39 treatments. the second experiment was carried out from may to july, 2006, in a randomized block design, with five replications, in a factorial arrangement (three inoculation methods x 11 genotypes), in order to compare three inoculation methods for cff. the genotypes used in this test were the most resistant and susceptible according to the first experiment. the rates of evaluation were used to determine the area under disease progress curve (audpc). the genotypes novirex, iac carioca tybat? and amarelo baixo were considered resistant. the toothpick inoculation method allowed an efficient discrimination among resistant and susceptible genotypes and it was also faster and easier to perform than the other methods.

Abstract: to develop a plant breeding program, information about parentals per se performance and also about genotypes combining ability is an important step. crosses involving snap and common beans are usual in breeding snap beans since both belong to the same species and many times common beans genotypes have interesting traits to be transferred to snap beans. the aim of this work was to evaluate the combining ability among four snap beans and one common bean genotypes considering agronomic traits. the genotypes were chosen based on genetic divergence and desirable agronomic traits. crosses in a complete diallel without reciprocals design were performed. eight agronomic traits were evaluated under field conditions from november 2007 to february 2008, in a randomized block design, with four replications, in tangará da serra, mato grosso, brazil. the parents 'uel 1' and 'novirex' had the best performance and were indicated to start breeding programs aiming to develop promising populations. the combinations 'manteiga baixo' x 'novirex' and 'manteiga baixo' x 'uel 1' had the best results considering specific combining ability. yet, these combinations were originated from 'uel 1' and 'novirex', the two parents with superior general combining ability and also the best mean values.

Abstract: In this paper we present a pedagogical project conceived to propitiate connectivity and incentive creativity, within language studies conducted on the undergraduate level. We work with the supposition that both processes are related and represent the necessary condition for freedom of speech. As educators, we understand the importance of creativity for knowledge acquisition, fixation and development in the learning processes. We comprehend as well that connectivity between students is an enriching exchange and that connectivity between students and media, as an access to what comes to light through human practices, is fundamental for the building of knowledge. According to this pedagogical viewpoint and corresponding to our goals – the receptivity to diverse expression forms, the combination of theory and practice, the production and the analysis of discourses circulating in the media – the digital technologies were taken as the appropriate response, given that they provide tools for the convergence and integration of different media, combining image, sound and writing, in the form of hypermedia. We created media wiki pages for each class, in order to provide a working space for interlocution and for text production following the steps of the new tools. In addition, a reflection on online journalism processes and challenges was developed, considering the confluence of images and texts.

Abstract: bacterial leaf spot (bls) is the most important bacterial disease in sweet pepper, causing intense defoliation under favorable conditions, leaving the exposed fruits to sunburn and decreasing the yield. to estimate genetic effects of the reaction to bls on leaves and fruits, under the conditions of campos dos goytacazes (brazil), hybrids f1, without reciprocals, were obtained from diallel crosses among five pepper genotypes, three susceptible ('uenf 1420 ', 'uenf 1421 ' and 'uenf 1422 ') and two resistant ('uenf 1381 ' and 'uenf 1382 '). leaves were inoculated by infiltrating the mesophyll with 103 cells/ml, adjusted with spectrophotometer. variety and mean heterosis were significant for resistance on leaves, indicating that additive and dominant effects are involved in the genetic control of this character. for resistance in fruits, only variety effects were significant, indicating the presence of additive effects in the control of this characteristic. based on these analyses, the genotypes 'uenf 1381 ' and 'uenf 1382 ' were selected for resistance to bls on leaves. for resistance to bls on fruits, 'uenf 1381' and 'uenf 1421' were the best genotypes. the best hybrids for resistance to bls on leaves were: 'uenf 1420' x 'uenf 1421', 'uenf 1382' x 'uenf 1420', 'uenf 1381' x 'uenf 1420', 'uenf 1381' x 'uenf 1421', 'uenf 1381' x 'uenf 1422' and 'uenf 1381' x 'uenf 1382'.

Abstract: a complex hypothalamic network of hormones and neuropeptides regulates body weight. mutations in these hormones/peptides, their receptors or regulatory elements, have been described in humans, but they are rare and could not explain the commonest forms of obesity. nevertheless, the study of these mutations has favored a great progress in the knowledge of genetic basis and physiopathology of obesity, opening new perspectives on the therapeutic approach of this prevalent disease. recently, mutations in the melanocortin 4 receptor have been found in up to 5% of severe obese subjects, being thus far the most prevalent monogenic form of obesity in humans. in this revision, we discuss the mutations described in some elements of the body weight regulation system in humans, and their implications for the genesis of obesity.
