Rodrigues-Júnior,Antonio Luiz;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232012000300027
Abstract: the concept of epidemiological intelligence, as a construction of information societies, goes beyond monitoring a list of diseases and the ability to elicit rapid responses. the concept should consider the complexity of the definition of epidemiology in the identification of this object of study without being limited to a set of actions in a single government sector. the activities of epidemiological intelligence include risk assessment, strategies for prevention and protection, subsystems of information, crisis management rooms, geographical analysis, etc. this concept contributes to the understanding of policies in health, in multisectorial and geopolitical dimensions, as regards the organization of services around public health emergencies, primary healthcare, as well as disasters. the activities of epidemiological intelligence should not be restricted to scientific research, but the researchers must beware of threats to public health. lalonde's model enabled consideration of epidemiological intelligence as a way to restructure policies and share resources by creating communities of intelligence, whose purpose is primarily to deal with public health emergencies and disasters.

Abstract: over the last few years, language learning histories have revealed aspects of foreign language acquisition processes that neither ordinary observation nor emic research has been able to capture. this is true because the multiple aspects of the learning language system are not easily perceived by observation techniques only, especially those related to students' awareness of the process they are part of. language learning histories have much to say about students' feelings, wishes, and standpoints, and these histories have undoubtedly struck a chord with foreign language students and the field experiences they have had worldwide. the importance of language learning histories to second/foreign language acquisition research has motivated me to understand it as a genre with typical as well as distinct discursive features, when compared to the narratives labov (1972) investigated. this paper thus aims to analyze language learning histories from a genre-based perspective, by using systemic-functional linguistics genre theory to pinpoint some functional stages that usually appear in the language learning histories studied. the data are thirty seven transcripts of language learning histories from brazilian students available at amfale project homepage. following halliday & hasan's (1985) position that every context is in the text, this ongoing research adopts martin & rose's (2003) textual approach to both categorize the language learning histories and depict a major picture of this specific genre. the results have demonstrated that a distinguishing feature of this genre, which pervades most of the data analyzed, is the fact that language learning histories present discursive differences in their conclusion, or coda, in relation to labov's categorization.
Análise crítica do discurso: modismo, teoria ou método?
Rodrigues-Júnior, Adail Sebasti?o;
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-63982009000100006
Abstract: critical discourse analysis (cda) has been considered a potential theory for the unveiling of power relations and ideologies commonly found in discourse. many theoreticians agree on the fact that cda has contributed to the understanding of several linguistic phenomena that usually portray obfuscated hegemonies, since language is a powerful tool for disseminating biased assumptions as well as ideologies. nonetheless, why did cda attract severe criticisms from a wide range of scholars in the 1990s? these critics presented a full list of problems concerning the methods and approaches often utilized by critical discourse analysts. among the criticisms, problems of reception and representativeness are claimed to pervade most of the treatment given by cda researchers to their data. despite all this, the keenness of critical discourse analysts to display a methodological ground to the discipline has had its positive results - cda is now a recognized and well-established branch of applied linguistics in the international context, within the interface between the social sciences and the humanities. recent publication, principally from fairclough and his colleagues, has taken into considerable account some of the criticisms, by responding to these critics accordingly. in brazil, however, there has been a "deafening silence" about this issue, especially because researchers seem to disregard these criticisms. in this paper, i intend to "break this silence" and bring into discussion some of these criticisms and their impact on cda and the application of its theory in brazilian research. the main aim of the paper is to see whether some research on cda in brazil has presented the same problems posed by these critics, by analyzing four articles that use cda as an orienting theory, published in a special issue on cda from a well-known brazilian journal entitled d.e.l.t.a. the results have indicated that some of the problems outlined by these critics also appear on the articles analy
Representa??o gay em corpus literário paralelo
Rodrigues Júnior, Adail Sebasti?o;
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-63982010000300006
Abstract: this paper aims at presenting part of the results of my doctorate research, with a focus on how gay characters and their world realities are represented by means of transitivity (halliday; matthiessen, 2004). the corpora under analysis are a collection of gay short stories entitled stud (andros, 1969) and its brazilian translation as aventuras de um garoto de programa (andros, 1998), re-textualized almost thirty years after the original publication in the united states of america. five excerpts were chosen in order to show how parts of the characters' bodies are used to represent their world realities, which points to the role of the body in the constitution of homosexual social relations in the context of the 1960s in the u.s. likewise, the translation, though rendered in the 1990s in brazil, emphasizes the same role played by fragments of the characters' bodies. thus, the results open new possibilities for discussing further how gays are represented in literary discourse.
Ethnography: method only or logic of inquiry in efl research in Brazil?
Rodrigues-Júnior, Adail Sebasti?o;
Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-18132012000100003
Abstract: this exploratory paper poses the following question: how has ethnography been used as logic of inquiry in english as a foreign language (efl) research in brazil? in order to start some discussion in this respect, a corpus comprised of thirty seven ma abstracts available at the online bank of theses of capes (research and graduate teaching support coordination) was used to investigate how ethnography has been utilized as an orienting procedure in brazilian research on efl. the keywords language teaching, ethnography and ethnographic were chosen so as to select abstracts that were related to ethnography and language teaching, either as logic of inquiry, or as a methodological tool for collecting and analyzing data. the preliminary results have suggested that ethnography has mostly been adopted as an instrument for analysis rather than logic of inquiry, which (i) allows for the misunderstanding commonly arisen from research in this field of investigation and consequently (ii) points out that foreign language teaching and learning research should take into account more focused and clarified methodological designs under the umbrella of qualitative research.

This paper presents the first results of a linguistic and discursive framework for the analysis of narratives of Learners of English as a Second or Foreign Language as part of the AMFALE Project (Learning with Memories of Learners of English as a Second or Foreign Language) from the College of Letters at UFMG. Drawing primarily on Martin and Rose's (2003) framework of discourse analysis, the paper's main objective is to discuss the genre features of the narratives under investigation according to the model of genre analysis developed by Eggins and Martin (1997), in order to fully understand how learners of English as a Foreign Language express the complexities of their learning experiences through the linguistic and discursive choices they make. Given that storytelling, more than any other family of genres, makes visible their s

THE METHOD OF ANALYSTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS – AHP – AS ASSISTANCE FOR DETERMINING THE ENVIRONMENTAL VULNERABILITY OF PIEDADE RIVER WATERSHED (MG) Abstract: The environmental vulnerability determination allows evaluate the risk condition of the geoenvironmental processes of an area, like as erosion, soil contamination, water resources contamination, loss of agricultural use, and others. Supporting the study of environmental vulnerability, the AHP - Analystic Hierarchy Process – consists on create an hierarchy of decision to allow an overview of relationships inherent in the process. It was necessary to execute, individually, pairwise comparison and cross-analysis of four criteria considered critical to the determination of vulnerability: slope, land use and occupancy, pedology and geology. Preparation for planting areas or exposed soil proved to be most favorable to environment vulnerability, followed by areas of slopes greater than 30%. The less vulnerable areas were situated preferably near the Piedade river, in its middle course, and also in the watershed’s northwestern portion. This fact is mainly due to the geology in these areas, which is unfavorable to the occurrence of processes contributing to vulnera

Abstract: successful vaccine application means maximum protection with minimal number of administrations. a rational development of vaccines involves studies of the nature of the antigen as well as of the adjuvant to be used to improve the immune responses. this has provided the impetus for studies to design the degradable devices and for different approaches to antigen delivery by different routes of administration. the development of controlled release systems based on polymeric devices that permit a sustained or pulsed release of encapsulated antigens has attracted much interest. polymeric delivery systems consist of polymers that release their content continuously in a controlled manner over a period of time. the development of a biocompatible delivery system for parenteral administration offers several advantages in terms of immunoadjuvanticity over other compounds. it was found that, in contrast to other carriers, microspheres are more stable, thus permitting administration by the oral or parenteral route. in the present study, we describe the main characteristics and potentialities of this new immunoadjuvant for oral and parenteral administration.
