The damage control surgery is a widely accepted concept today among abdominal trauma specialists when it comes to the severely traumatized. In these patients, the death is due, in most cases, to the installation of the lethal triad (hypothermia, coagulopathy and acidosis) and not the inability to repair the serious initial damage. In this review, the authors address the lethal triad in its three phases and emphasize the measures taken to prevent them, as well as discussing the indication and employment of damage control surgery in its various stages. Restoring the physiological status of the patient in the ICU, so that he/she can be submitted to final operation and closure of the abdominal cavity, another challenge in severe trauma patients, is also discussed.

Abstract: traditionally, public sculptures and monuments have been thought and constructed according to the logic of the powers that be, serving to disseminate and consolidate their perspective. on the brazilian political scene, discussions of the iconographic proposals of european nazi-fascist and communist parties began in the period between the two world wars and continued through the end of the vargas regime, a politics that affirmed concrete symbols of nationality and power. this article discusses this authoritarian heritage through a study of monuments erected in city squares in curitiba, seeking to understand how the ideas and political environment of that period informed the visual solutions that were devised. a study of the reception of images aids us in our attempt to comprehend the relationship between a population and the status quo, as well as the internal struggles that went on during the period, frequently camoulflaged by debates that were posed as "merely" aesthetic.

Abstract: s?o francisco valley has emerged as a new production area of fine wines. although, brazil is not amongst the largest wine consumers, what can be understood by the lack of the beverage production history compared to other countries. thus, an initial step towards a consumer culture development of this wine region is to identify their consumer?s characteristics. personal values are presented as major psychographic market segmentation criteria. in this sense, present study aimed to identify the s?o francisco valley wines? consumer personal values, as well as elaborate a typological profile of these consumers. to this, we used in-depth interviews technique and functional discourse analysis in two steps: text coding, generating elements and categories referring to consumption values and aspects; and analysis of horizontal and vertical relationships between these elements. based on the findings we suggest a typology of s?o francisco valley?s wine consumer?s with two profiles: thirsty and haughty. contributions to the knowledge of the area and the wineries of the region, as well as directions for future research are considered.

Abstract: We conducted a Spitzer Space Telescope survey of 28 Luminous (11 < log(LIR/L_odot) < 12, LIRGs) and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (log(LIR/L_odot) > 12, ULIRGs). Many of these galaxies are found in pairs or associations and are powered by either nuclear activity or starformation (Sanders & Mirabel 1996). Our main goal is to understand the relative importance of starbursts and AGNs in interacting systems. Is the frequency of AGN and starbursts in these interacting galaxies related to their luminosities? What is the importance of the merger stage and the frequency of AGNs? We present our conclusions and diagnostic diagrams based in the observed near infrared lines and compare to studies based solely in optical data.

Abstract: local assemblages of fishes associated with reefs are influenced by interactions among the availability of larvae and survival of recruits with subsequent biotic and abiotic forcing, as well as by periodic and episodic disturbances of varying natures and magnitudes. therefore, besides being structurally heterogeneous and patchily distributed, reef systems are strongly context-dependent due to the influence of a broad array of ecological processes. in order to assess interactions of local factors that influence the distribution and abundance of reef fishes within a coastal mosaic of rocky reefs, we tested the null hypothesis of no significant variation in fish assemblage structure, by comparing 33 sites along the northern coast of the s?o paulo state, southeastern brazil. replicated stationary visual census samples (n = 396) were obtained at different distances from the coast, depths and wave exposures, including the mainland, three relatively small coastal islands, and the two margins of a wide channel between the mainland and the large s?o sebasti?o island (~350 km2), totaling 225 h of scuba diving. the regional rocky shore fish fauna comprised 106 species (41 families), with preponderance of diurnal mobile-invertebrate feeders. samples from the outer margin of the s?o sebasti?o island, together with those from alcatrazes, búzios, and vitória islands were significantly dissimilar from samples from the coastal sites at the s?o sebasti?o channel. species richness tended to increase in a gradient from the coast to the more offshore islands. local conditions such as depth and other habitat characteristics also influenced fish assemblages' structure. distance from coast and depth were the main predictors for fish assemblages, followed by water transparency, temperature and benthic cover. this study represents the first regional-scale assessment of fish assemblages associated with rocky reefs in the s?o paulo state coast, filling a major geographic knowledge gap in the s

This study represents the first regional-scale assessment of fish assemblages associated with rocky reefs in the S o Paulo State coast, filling a major geographic knowledge gap in the South Atlantic. As the study region is experiencing fast coastal development and growing threats from seaport expansion, oil and gas exploitation, as well as increasing fishing and tourism pressure, the understanding of the underlying factors that influence the distribution and abundance of the reef-associated biota comprises a relevant baseline for monitoring, conservation planning and management. Abstract: the reduction of cr(vi) to cr(iii) decrease the toxic effect of this metal in the environment, because cr(iii) is insoluble to the biological membranes. the microbial reduction of cr(vi) it is an alternative to reduce the environmental impacts caused by this metal used in several industrial processes. the objective of this research was to select microorganisms from chromium contaminated soil and to characterize their ability to reduce cr(vi). the activity of reduction of cr(vi) for the isolated was quantified with s-diphenylcarbazide. a group of 20 chromium resistant bacteria were isolated; six of these were able to reduce 100mg l-1 cr(vi) in 24 hours. the isolated bacteria, from contaminated soil can remediate chromate and presented potential for other studies seeking their application in bioremediation processes.

Abstract: this article provides a review of the major theoretical and empirical issues related to the economic interfaces between agriculture, environment and trade, in general, and particularly to brazil. over the years, given the multiplicity of controversial results registered in the literature, it became increasingly clear the role played by the sector and regional specificities in this field of study. the trend of adopting processes and methods potentially and highly degrading to environment, noticed in important segments of brazilian agriculture, besides generating domestic effects rather negligible, contributes to place the country on the handle of sight of the international environmental groups. moreover, it hampers the acceptance of national goods in the international market, increasingly reflecting the global environmental issues. conclusively, it is necessary to define synergistic environmental policies, capable of providing more sustainable patterns of production to the brazilian agriculture, without compromising their competitiveness.
