Active star formation in N11B Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud: a sequential star formation scenario confirmed

Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1086/368141
Abstract: The second largest HII region in the Large Magellanic Cloud, N11B has been surveyed in the near IR.We present JHKs images of the N11B nebula. These images are combined with CO(1-0) emission line data and with archival NTT and HST/WFPC2 optical images to address the star formation activity of the region.IR photometry of all the IR sources detected is given. We confirm that a second generation of stars is currently forming in the N11B region. Our IR images show the presence of several bright IR sources which appear located towards the molecular cloud as seen from the CO emission in the area.Several of these sources show IR colours with YSO characteristics and they are prime candidates to be intermediate-mass Herbig Ae/Be stars. For the first time an extragalactic methanol maser is directly associated with IR sources embedded in a molecular core. Two IR sources are found at 2"(0.5 pc) of the methanol maser reported position.Additionally, we present the association of the N11A compact HII region to the molecular gas where we find that the young massive O stars have eroded a cavity in the parental molecular cloud, typical of a champagne flow. The N11 region turns out to be a very good laboratory for studying the interaction of winds, UV radiation and molecular gas.Several photodissociation regions are found.
Quasiparticle bandstructure effects on the {\it d} hole lifetimes of copper within the GW approximation

Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.66.161104
Abstract: We investigate the lifetime of {\it d} holes in copper within a {\it first--principle} $GW$ approximation. At the $G_0W_0$ level the lifetime of the topmost {\it d} bands are in agreement with the experimental results and are four times smaller than those obtained in the ``on--shell'' calculations commonly used in literature. The theoretical lifetimes and bandstructure, however, worsen when further iterative steps of self-consistency are included in the calculation, pointing to a delicate interplay between self--consistency and the inclusion of vertex corrections. We show that the $G_0W_0$ success in the lifetimes calculation is due to the opening of new ``intraband'' decay channels that disappear at self--consistency.

The Effects of Systemic Risk on the Allocation between Value and Growth Portfolios  [PDF]
Gabriel Penagos, Gonzalo Rubio
Journal of Mathematical Finance (JMF) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jmf.2013.31A016

Given the striking effects of the recent financial turmoil, and the importance of value and growth portfolios for both local and international portfolio allocation, we investigate the effects of systemic jumps on the optimal portfolio investment strategies across value and growth equity portfolios. We find that the cost of ignoring systemic jumps is not substantial, unless the portfolio is highly levered and the average size amplitude of the jump is large enough. From the optimal asset allocation point of view, it seems more important the effects of few but relatively large jumps than highly frequent but small jumps. Indeed, the period in which the value premium is higher coincides with a period of few, but large and positive average size jumps for value stocks, and negative and very large average size jumps for growth stocks.

Disfagia aórtica a partir de un aneurisma fusiforme asociado con disección aórtica tipo B

Revista argentina de cardiolog?-a , 2005,
Abstract: dysphagia aortica resulting from extrinsic compression of the esophagus by a descending thoracic aortic aneurysm is a rare etiology. a 63-year-old man presented with progressive dysphagia for 6 months associated to weight loss. he had a history of hypertension and acute thoracic pain one year before, considered at that moment as a 'coronary syndrome'. magnetic resonance imaging and aortogram showed the usual pattern of aortic dissection stanford type b and a localized fusiform epifrenic aneurysm narrowing the distal portion of the esophagus. the case was interpreted as a progressive aneurysm caused by an aortic dissection which had passed unnoticed one year before. after graft replacement the patient developed a paraplegia as a major event. dysphagia improved dramatically and 6 months after discharge a new esophagogram showed normal transit.
Violencia homicida y estructuras criminales en Bogotá

Abstract: from mid-90s on, the homicide rate in bogotá steadily decreased and has reached relatively low levels within the national urban context. nevertheless, violence in the capital is still considerable under any international standards and some sectors of the city have really high homicide records. this article approaches the influence of crime structures on the homicide levels in the city, based upon an analysis of the distinct manifestations of violence, as well as spatial and diffusional homicide patterns in bogotá. three core conclusions emerge from the evidence on homicide violence in bogotá for the 1997-199 period: 1) violent deaths are highly concentrated in a few points and that geographical pattern is consistent along time; 2) instrumental violence (those that are the result of retributions and fights) contributes with a higher number of deaths than the impulsive type (homicide resulting from domestic violence and street fights, which together with drinking, end up being fatal); and 3) there is a relevant geographical convergence between intense violence hotspots and the presence of crime structures associated to illegal markets and outlaw activities, and belonging to the "underground world". these conclusions challenge the predominant debate in colombia, which focuses on urban violence phenomena resulting from general problems of citizenship socialization - specially intolerance - and which minimizes or ignores those resulting from the gradual rise in organized delinquency.
Violencia homicida y estructuras criminales en Bogotá

Sociologias , 2002,

Abstract: objective: to establish a methodology to evaluate the autosterility property of 2 adhesives, tisuacryl of national production, and histoacryl produced by b. brown that was taken as a reference. methods: every adhesive got in contact with the inoculum of the strain selected that produced its polymerization. it was stored for a prudential time and it got in contact with fresh blood for no less than 24 hours. results: a bacterial growth appeared in most of the polymer preparations with inoculum subjected to whole blood. conclusions: the result showed that none of these preparations was autosterile.
