Abstract: This paper discusses the possible heuristic effects of reading dystopian literary texts and its reflective critical dimension due to modern sociability and its views of the future. It analyses the importance of reading and literature in the development of a critical awareness that will promote changes and ethic behaviors as opposed to alienation and submission to modernity, observed in the metaphor of the “book-men” in the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. It addresses theoretical aspects of the speculative literature of science fiction by anchoring on postulations of esthetic reception and proposing, as an analytical road for these texts, the valorization of the diegetic content, the perlocutory dimension, the emphasis on meaning and on text as symbolic form, and the interdisciplinary perception which is activated through the reading process and the construction of the “memories of the future”.

Abstract: the classroom is the privileged space for negotiation and production of new senses and meanings, especially concerning the different school concepts. this takes place within a complex interactive network where, besides formal knowledge itself, teachers' and students' life history and experiences become present and are updated. the teacher is expected to guide his/her group of students, aiming at understanding and negotiating the different meaning-making processes involved in the learning situations he/she has planned. the teacher has usually been identified with this mediator role, and this idea has been assigned to the historical and cultural approach. the objective of this text is to discuss the identification between teacher action and mediation, in order to characterize what the work developed by the teacher corresponds to according to our point of view, focusing on the zone of proximal development concept. the considerations suggest that learning contents will only be at the service of student development if they are operated taking into account the conjuncture of their meaning-making processes, and observing that the utmost role of education is to promote relational possibilities.

Abstract: In order to recognize and anticipate customer’s requests, reinforce and manage the communication and operational flows, analyses of which are the services that the consumers demand to the energy companies are extremely important. To improve each relationship channel and to recognize the customers’ profile, expectations and needs, it has been necessary to reinforce the operational efficiency concerning costs and agility. Operational effectiveness answering the demands is pursued, considering the amount of services offered and generated by relationship channels, communication facilities and operational conditions provided by the companies. A huge amount of data had to be organized to represent this scenario and forecast the relationship. To represent it, models were created to monitor and predict customers’ requirements based on historical and online data. There were established regional resources availability, weather conditions, problems concerning the energy distribution grid, as well as the motivation of the customers to use alternative medias or relationship channels. The big data treatment techniques were used in order to provide the necessary agility to achieve the monthly/hourly volume of data (millions of registers per month) and permit communication clusters’ views.

Abstract: the purpose of the study was to compare the linkage parameter estimates between hospitalization and mortality databases, calculated separately for the subsets of deaths from ill-defined causes and deaths from known causes. the databases for deaths from known causes and ill-defined causes were linked to a hospital admissions database. parameters were estimated using two strategies: (1) first name, last name, and day, month, and year of birth, (2) full name and date of birth. in the first strategy, the estimates for the first and last name were at least 97% in both sets. however, the items day, month, and year of birth produced low values in both sets. in the second strategy there was an important difference between the two groups, with much lower values for full name and especially for date of birth in the group of deaths from ill-defined causes. our results emphasize the need for pilot studies to evaluate possible internal heterogeneity of databases during the planning stage of linkage projects.

Abstract: in a field collecting trip carried out in the state of espírito santo, brazil, in january 2006, as part of a study on plasmodium transmission, anophelinae larvae were collected in bromeliads. the immatures were raised in the laboratory until adult stage, and thus adults male and female and their associated larval and pupal exuviae were mounted and identified. consequently, it was verified that two specimens belong to anopheles (kerteszia) homunculus komp, 1937. this is the first record of that kerteszia species in espírito santo. the present finding shows the importance of additional studies aiming to establish the geographical distribution of an. homunculus in addition to the taxonomic status and the epidemiological importance of the species in the dynamics of malaria transmission in areas of atlantic forest.
