Higgs searches at CMS
Roberto Salerno,for the CMS Collaboration
Physics , 2013,
Abstract: Results are summarized from searches for the standard model Higgs boson in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 and 8 TeV in the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements of mass, cross section, and properties of the narrow resonance recently observed are presented. The searches beyond standard model Higgs boson, in the CMS experiment at the LHC, are highlighted.
Use of Ionic Liquid in Fabrication, Characterization, and Processing of Anodic Porous Alumina
Salerno Marco,Patra Niranjan,Cingolani Roberto
Nanoscale Research Letters , 2009,
Abstract: Two different ionic liquids have been tested in the electrochemical fabrication of anodic porous alumina in an aqueous solution of oxalic acid. It was found that during galvanostatic anodization of the aluminum at a current density of 200 mA/cm2, addition of 0.5% relative volume concentration of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoborate resulted in a three-fold increase of the growth rate, as compared to the bare acidic solution with the same acid concentration. This ionic liquid was also used successfully for an assessment of the wettability of the outer surface of the alumina, by means of liquid contact angle measurements. The results have been discussed and interpreted with the aid of atomic force microscopy. The observed wetting property allowed to use the ionic liquid for protection of the pores during a test removal of the oxide barrier layer.
Full decoherence induced by local fields in open spin chains with strong boundary couplings
Vladislav Popkov,Mario Salerno,Roberto Livi
Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.1088/1367-2630/17/2/023066
Abstract: We investigate an open $XYZ$ spin $1/2$ chain driven out of equilibrium by boundary reservoirs targeting different spin orientations, aligned along the principal axes of anisotropy. We show that by tuning local magnetic fields, applied to spins at sites near the boundaries, one can change any nonequilibrium steady state to a fully uncorrelated Gibbsian state at infinite temperature. This phenomenon occurs for strong boundary coupling and on a critical manifold in the space of the fields amplitudes. The structure of this manifold depends on the anisotropy degree of the model and on the parity of the chain size.

Revista Brasileira de Fruticultura , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-29452002000300003
Abstract: in the present work aimed to study the correlation between the in vivo apical dominance and the in vitro regenerative capacity in banana (musa acuminata colla) cvs. nanic?o (aaa) and grand naine (aaa). lateral buds explanted from mother plants showing different apical dominace levels (low, medium and high) were cultivated in the laboratory of tissue culture of eei/epagri-sc, during five subcultures with 30 days interval in ms culture medium supplemented with bap (11,1 mmol/l), sucrose (30 g/l), agar (7 g/l) and ms vitamins. the ph was adjusted to 5.8 prior autoclaving. cultures derived from lateral buds of mother plants showing low level of apical dominace resulted in the highest proliferation rate, with 7.5 shoots per explant for 'grand naine'. as for cv nanic?o the highest proliferation rate (10.9 shoots/explants) resulted from mother plants showing medium level of apical dominance.

Abstract: No presente trabalho, buscou-se correlacionar diferentes graus de dominancia apical in vivo com a capacidade proliferativa in vitro da bananeira, através da rela o existente entre a fonte de explante e o seu posterior comportamento in vitro. Nanic o.
Capacitive Mixing for Harvesting the Free Energy of Solutions at Different Concentrations
Raúl A. Rica,Roberto Ziano,Domenico Salerno,Francesco Mantegazza,Renéa van Roij,Doriano Brogioli
Entropy , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/e15041388
Abstract: An enormous dissipation of the order of 2 kJ/L takes place during the natural mixing process of fresh river water entering the salty sea. “Capacitive mixing” is a promising technique to efficiently harvest this energy in an environmentally clean and sustainable fashion. This method has its roots in the ability to store a very large amount of electric charge inside supercapacitor or battery electrodes dipped in a saline solution. Three different schemes have been studied so far, namely, Capacitive Double Layer Expansion (CDLE), Capacitive Donnan Potential (CDP) and Mixing Entropy Battery (MEB), respectively based on the variation upon salinity change of the electric double layer capacity, on the Donnan membrane potential, and on the electrochemical energy of intercalated ions.
A Theory of Political Entrepreneurship  [PDF]
Matthew McCaffrey, Joseph T. Salerno
Modern Economy (ME) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/me.2011.24061
Abstract: This paper adapts the entrepreneurial theory developed by Richard Cantillon, Frank Knight, and Ludwig von Mises to the theory of “political entrepreneurship.” Political entrepreneurship is an outgrowth of the theory of the market entrepreneur, and derives from extending entrepreneurial theory from the market into the political sphere of action. By applying the theory of the entrepreneur to political behavior, we provide a basis for identifying political entrepreneurs, and for separating them analytically from other government agents. The essence of political entrepreneurship is the redirection of production from the path it would have taken in an unregulated market. Nevertheless, this production does produce an income stream to political entrepreneurs which closely resembles the profit of market entrepreneurs.
Los Ferrocarriles del Estado en Argentina y su contribución a la ciencia
Salerno, Elena;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702008000300006
Abstract: in argentina, the state financed, built, and ran government-own railroads based on recourse to subsidies until the first yrigoyen administration (1916-1922), which introduced changes and shifted the direction of rail policy somewhat. the ferrocarriles del estado contributed to the development of science, created a demand for professionals which helped form the professional engineering field, and, by linking the capitals of central and northern provinces, facilitated both communications and scientific tasks themselves, especially research into diseases endemic to the country.
Karl-Otto Apel y la crítica del sentido
Ideas y Valores , 2009,
Abstract: this work emphasizes the influence in apel of the named critique of meaning developed by wittgenstein and peirce. we reconstruct the foundations of the recognition of a linguistic a priori, and of the semiotic-anthropological radicalization, that leads to the conception that man can be understood as thought-sign. it also shows the way apel believes that such thought-sign is inscribed in the context of a supraindividual enviroment, where it develops its own individuality. from that approach, a transformation of the subject function in the interpreter function of the signs has to be done in order to create a new answer to the problem of intersubjectivity.
ética y dialéctica o ética dialéctica
Salerno, Gustavo;
Andamios , 2011,
Abstract: the work intends (a) to reconstruct the compression that k. o. apel has of the dialectic, (b) with special reference to the way in which she operates in environment of the ethics, and (c) to show a certain difficulty of said conception. concretely, this situates in the fixing of the character to a priori of the conflicting elements (ideality and facticity) and at the same time in the proposal of the dissolution of the tension among them. contrary to this, proposes toward the end a perspective that takes in consideration an insurmountable interdependency among them.
