Innovation in the Financial Sector: Persistence and Schumpeterian Hypotheses  [PDF]
Roberto Napoli
Journal of Service Science and Management (JSSM) , 2008, DOI: 10.4236/jssm.2008.13023
Abstract: The paper analyses innovation features in the German financial sector. The first topic is persistence of innovation. Our research question is: Do innovators plan further innovation for the subsequent year? In addition, since the sector is so far poorly researched, very basic questions are investigated in the paper: the relationship between firm size and innovation (both linear and quadratic), as well as the impact of market structure on innovation (i.e. Schumpeterian and neo-Schumpeterian hypotheses). Finally, Suttons argument of R & D sunk costs is investigated as a possible explanation for persistence. Basing on the CIS IV survey, our empirical evidence is consistent with the results of similar researches carried out in different sectors.
ABSTRACT This article is a reflection on the possible relationships between academic identities and team management. Rather than negating the relative importance of management, it is argued that only by adopting practices that are mindful of academic identities can one attempt to arrive at a novel notion of the idea of the university that is the result of a real dialogic co-construction among different parties (academics, managers, administrators, leaders, students etc) which is underpinned by a set of shared meanings and intentions.
Educational development - a view from outside: national trends and institutional issues at Imperial College London
Roberto Di Napoli
ABSTRACT The aim of this article is both to inform and reflect on the state and status of educational development in the UK, with special reference to the English case, using Imperial College London as an example of current trends and issues. While describing current trends in educational development, the paper attempts to reflect critically on a number of current issues: the need for an institutional strategy for educational development; the relationship between generic and discipline-based development; the 'service' status often ascribed to centres of educational development and its implications; and the need for securing a safe career paths for developers. At times of change in the Spanish context, the Spanish reader should find some of such themes familiar and it may be of interest to him/her to gauge the level of the debate on them in the UK.
Special Issue: The Doctoral Journey: Perspectives
Denise Batchelor,Roberto Di Napoli
Educate~ , 2006,
Abstract: : A journey entails endings and beginnings, loss and retrieval. It offers a chance of change and renewal, but also a risk of disorientation and displacement. Researchers- as-voyagers, travel from familiar inner and outer landscapes into unknown territories with new horizons. They progress through an itinerary of developing meanings, both epistemological and ontological. Researchers-as-voyagers are engaged in a process of becoming, and of discovering a voice. The ‘voyage’ tenders experimental possibilities for alternative understandings of who they are, who they could be and what they know. It opens up transitional spaces for the formation of a new sense of identity. However, certain educational practices underpinning contemporary doctoral studies programmes may impede the process of self-authorship that is fundamental to research.

The plants, rituals and spells that 'cured' helminthiasis in Sicily
Mariangela Napoli
Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1746-4269-4-21
Abstract: This research is based on dialogue. Senior 'healers' were contacted; furthermore, doctors, teachers, farmers and in general 'experts' with herbs and 'magic' rituals. Information was collected about the way the plants of folk medicine are prepared. The interviewees were also invited to recite prayers and spells against helminthiasis. The author has highlighted the importance of how, in some parts of Sicily, some ailments like helminthiasis and other correlated pathologies like scantu are 'treated' and, especially within the rural social classes, by folk medicine remedies, herbal practises, particular prayers, rituals and spells. As regards health/illness, it should be noted that in the last ten years conventional medicine has provided very satisfactory results even resolving potentially mortal pathologies. However, in certain social classes, there is no real collaboration between conventional and folk medicine; so for some senior citizens, the 'healer' with his rituals and empirical and magical herbs is still the person to turn to for the 'cure' of particular ailments. Interest in these practises from ancestral heritage in an advanced country like Italy, is only relevant if the aim is to recoup a cultural identity which is already in decline. It is significant to report a piece: on 14 October 2007 the news on a well-known national Italian TV channel reported an interview with a 94 year-old man from Arbatax (Sardinia) referred to as a 'healer' because both his townspeople and others from all over the world go to him for his cures. He is not paid except in kind and has been known to cure St. Anthony's fire, burns, scalding and marine fungal infections, by smearing his saliva over the infected part and reciting 'special words'.This work, carried out by the Botany Department of the University of Catania, forms part of a series of ethnobotanical investigations in several zones of Eastern Sicily (Mount Etna [1,2]); North-Eastern (Nebrodi Mountains [3]); South-Eastern Sicily (

The trace can play a connecting role as much as a disconnecting one. We will deal with this double dimension in studying three narratives, the common point of which is the use of the paradigm of investigation. The traces one must follow and interpret are always related to some obscure and forgotten past. In each case, the investigation carried out by the narrator is a means of bringing to light this forgotten, unthinkable past, and of making it exist anew in the narrative, the trace being the very means of gaining access to this past, while creating an rupture indispensable to its spectral unveiling.
L’Histoire, ce chaos à écrire
Gabrielle Napoli
Trans : Revue de Littérature Générale et Comparée , 2008,
Abstract: Le roman Tristano meurt (Tristano muore) d’A. In A. Tabucchi’s latest novel, Tristano is dying (Tristano muore), the main character Tristano, who was a former hero during the Italian Resistance, is dying. He decides to tell his life story to a writer. The story is fragmented, the main episodes are scattered in narration, and Tristano’s voice is hallucinatory. History has betrayed it because it stands for that "freezing creature who doesn’t feel pity for anything or anyone." The character’s personal consciousness represents the repercussions of modern chaos. Tristano’s voice proves to be the unifying element of the chaos of History and of his own story.
